INANCIAL AND com MERCIAL. MOBY MARKET, . \ Torspar, Dee. 25—6 P.M. ‘There was avery buoyant stock mirkst at thé ‘first board this morning, aad good deal of activity amtong speculators. All the leading fancies were in demani at an advance ranging from a quarter to one and e.quarter per cent. There were more cash ‘Operations than usoal. “Virginie 6’s weat up j per ecnt ; Erie Income Bonds, 14; Illinois Central Bonds, }; New York Central Bonds, }; Nicaragas ‘Transit, {; Cumberland Coa’, 1; New York Con- tral Railroad, {; Panama Railroad, 1; Erle Rail road, }; Harlem Railroad, 4; Reading Railroad, 14; Hudson Rgilroad, 1. Nosthern Indiana and Southern Mic\.igan old and Constraction Stock were Wold to-day at adecline. The declaration of a stock dividend on the old stock has no doubt disappoint- ed many holders, and but for the very low prise rul- ing for the stock, many holders wo@4 doubtless re- lize. These stock dividends are not popular, and Railroad bonds wese particularly active day, and the sales comprise a greater varie- than usual, at better prices. The improve- Roticed among the fancies to-day is the of a variety of causes, the principal of which is the receipt-of California gold. Any rise in fancy paper securities on such a baajs cannot be otherwise than temporary. Nothing but a general bank expausiva caa ii flate prices or create any spe- culative action, and as our banking institutions dare not expand, we most look for pretty quiet times in Wall street i: some months. It is seen by the weekly bank -eports that gold received from Cail fornia does .0% go into the bapks, or rather does Bot remain there. Messrs. Page, Bacon & Co. and Mofsra, Adams & Co. receive the balk of gold re- Mittances frm Califorsia, With th+se remittances « Come innumerable d:afts on each of thea2 houses, payable to th: rejrecentatives of shi :pers in Califor- nis, and the gold is in thie way disiributed broad Cast over the country, gladdening the firesides of hundreds of families, spreading peace and plenty through many « domestic circle. It goes into the strong boxes, vld stockings and other hiding places of the produ ixg classes of the country, or giving them the meats of paying any indebtedness, and keeping them in a sound and healthy pecuniary con- dition, It isa fortunate thing that the bulk of the California goki does not go into the banks. The expansion of bank losus has already been great enough to bring about a revulsion which has para- lyzed every interest and produced widespread bank- Fuptey. Upon @ epecie basis no greater than existed pre. vious to the gold productions of California, the benks more than doubled their credits, Had the bulk of goid from California gone into the vaults of the banks, the expansion would have been in greater proportion than it is now or than it has been, and we should have ‘had, at a later period, sudh & convulsion as the oldest financier never reamed of. We should have become so much ex- panded upon such « basis, that there would have been no ordinary collapse. It would have been more disastrous than anything of the kind ever be- fore realized in this country. The banks having Feached the end of their tether, there came at an earlier day a revulsion. It haa thus far been pretty pevere, and we fear the worst has yet tocome. We can, therefore, form some idea of the ultimate re- mult of a lovger period of extravagance and specu: lation, and of a more expanded system of credits. We should be thankful that circumstances over ‘which financiers and speculators had no control have preserved us from a calamity of much greater Magnitude than ever before experienced. We al- lade to ti disposal of our supplies of gold and gold dust from Californis, to the fact that they have _ one into the hands of the people, instead of going ‘imto the vaults of our banking institutions. The Ment than they had ten years ago, and we hope they will have less ten years hence. The people fre comparatively rich. At all events, they have very few depreciated bank notes in band, compared with 1837. The circulating medium is more metal- Ho, and it keeps out of the banks. The stream is, therefore, at its source, clear and transparent, and in time ‘wil be so again throughout ite entire course. There are a few muddy, dirty brooks run- ning into the main channel, which render it slightly impure; but as they become setiled, the whole will be cleaner and more healthy. The present revalaion has not reached the producing classes. The high prices ruling for all sorte of agricultural products are enriching the bulk of our population, and when the rubbish of speculation has been cleared away, ‘and economy has strengthened the consuming Classes, we sball find a solid, substantial fonndation fo rest the new system of credit upon ; and the ex- perience of the past will, we trast, serve as a beacon to warn us against similar transgression from the fixed and unalterable laws of trade. Aay deviation from theee laws has but one result. A half a dozen California and Australias at our beck cannot remove the penalty the infringe ment of certain laws of trade, regulating supply and demand, enforcer. The horrors of 1837 were lost sight of even by thoi:e who had passed through them, under the belief that so Jong as Californias gave us four to five millions of gold per month, there could not be another reval- sion. No similarity between the two periods of expansion cou'd be seen by those deeply involved in speculation, end all rushed wildiy along regardless ofthe future. They have since learned their mis- take, and if in after years another El Dorado should be discovered, the present revulsion wiil be remem- bered, and less confidence will be placed in such facilities for sustaining an over expanded credit bystem. At the second board the improvement of the morning was not only sustained, but a faither rise realized. Virginia 6’s went up 1 per ceut; Canton ©o,, 4; Cumberland, 4; Erie Railroad, 3; Reading Railroad, }; Michigan Central, 4; Micaigan Sou- thern Constrootion, 4; Harlem, 3. The receiptsat the office of the Asststant Trea- wurer of this port today amounted to $303,200, 0 which $200,000 was s transfer; paymen‘s, $226,361 34; paid Assay Office, $621 10—balance, $8,657,317 17. The inquiry for foreign exchange for remit- tance by the steamship Pacific, from this port fer Liverpool to-morrow, was moderate. Rates have been well maintained. We quote bills on London at 64.8 8 per cent premium. On Paris, 5f.208 5f 163. There was a good supply om the market After the adjournment of the board, Simeon Dra- per sold at auction, for account of whom it may concern, the Parker Vein Coal Company’s lands on George's Creek, Alleghany county, Md., comprising the tracts known as the Jackson, Totten, and ‘Westernport properties, containing in all about 1,700 acres of land, on which is situated the Jack- fon mine and village of Jacksonville, with all the wine, cars, tools and mining fixtures. The terms ‘were $30,000 cash; $50,000 April 1, 1855; $10,000 June 1; $25,000 September 1, and $50,000 April 1, 1856. The remainder in two annual payments from last mentioned day. Deferred payments to bear in- terest at the rate of 6 per cent, and to be secured & lien on the property. The amount realized the property was $250,000. It was purchased certain parties, and it will be worked under a organization. It is the intention of the pur- to give all the stookholders in the defunct Vein Company the privilege of partici. pating in the new arrangement, upon the payment Of a certain sum on each share held. A failare, or g7¢ ip The circular of T. J. Stewart & Co., in relation to cotton and the cotton market, of this date says:— ‘The market has gradually ytelded, since our respects suit, aspresented to our minds now, isthe more satis- factory, as it harmonizes therewith. The section delivering at New Orleans, presents so wide a range of climate and ‘soil, we have not space to take it up in detail, and there- fore confine ourselves to the result of our rope The receipts there will probably exceed the last by 100 000 bales. The repurts trom South Mississippi, Red River aud Yazoo districts are particularly favorable. Texas will give"20,000 over the last crop. Th aM will! certainly exceed 8,000,000 and posabiy, rac 100,000, but not beyond if prices in the spring to a low range. Plantera are fully able to hold 100,000 to 200,000 bales, and therefore many who a imit a growth of 3,100,000, do not connt on a delivery exceeding 2,900,000, which at present would appear ample for tl mpeison, of general commerce, At New Orleans the quality of the receipts thus far bave been low, bad color and leafy; this will be chenged when the tributary streams admit of navi- gation. At Charleston the receipts continue of high order At Sav@nnah, Florida, and Mobile, full average quality, Barir g’s Circular of the 8th inst. says:— ip American stocks we have few transactions te note there are more gellers than buyers, especially of rail ® bonds, which are offered at our quotatiuns. Tie revul- sion has thus far been severer on this side of the Atlantic than in Great Britain, and the probability is that it will continue to be felt less in England. They sre not so subject to these extremes. Their banking system is very different from ours, is not so suddenly and enormously inflated, and credits are therefore comparatively uniform and steady. The manufacturing districts of Great Britain are very much depressed by the absence of demand from the United States, and the effect of any revulsion on this side is more seriously felt in Manchester than in apy other part of the United Kingdom :— Trade is scarcely ever active towards the close of the year, but du.ing the past month it has been unusually Wall. If we consider, however, the overwhelming diffi- culties under which commercs is now carried on, and compare our present position with that of former years of depression, and Jet it be recollected, when we were at peace with all the world, we are surprised that in Lan- cathire, at least, matters are not worse. We are old enough to recollect the time when government loans were made to relieve our manufacturers, whose stocks had greatly accumulated and. could not’ be disposed of y price, and when companies were formed in Man- ster for the purpose ¢f advancing money on yarns and manufactured goeds; but thanks to free trade and to the genera) pemmenes with which commerce has been carried on; and thanks to the system prevailing here of cash payments, we have not come to that pass yet, and trustthat we shall not come tosee it. We have so fargot through the winter without depriving the laboring classes of their usual and necessary earnings at this in- clement season; for, although ‘short time’’ working has been a good deal talked of, it has by no means, been generally udopted. Some descriptions of goods, it is true, are accumulating, a as a general rule, the stocks neither of yarns nor of goods are excessive. The Indian and other fore‘gn markets have been over sup- plied; on the other hand, we know that cheap. prices push trade, and that, in the Indian ma in particular, immense quantities can be dis; of atlow rates. if, under such circumstances, a stinted supply of cotton, and consequently higher prices, had been our lot, it woukthave entaiied successive losses A! ship- pers; for: prices once reduced to a certain level in forvign markets, it is almost impossible to raise again io ashor space of time. Fortunately fox the genoral trade, the new recently received from America apeak in favor of a roe crop, and consequently for moderate prices. Our fri will recollect that this time last year a considerable re wuetion in the consumption of eotton took place, owing to various causes referred to in ourtrade report of the 1st December, 1853, and estimated by us at that time to have amounted to nearly 10,000 bales weekly. Stee eeee sees WHMD.« vs'byvs shcdncasest Marady idea eeesss DOO We are consequently consuming moer cotton now thaa we did in 1853. We know practically that more heavy goods, such as T cloths and other stout fabrics, are now produced than last year, when lighter qualitities of shirtings were manufactured in larger quantities for India. Many of our producers have turned from 5-4 shirtings to heavy narrow gouds, a better demand hav- ing for some time past been experienced for the latter. The following shows the comparative stock of cotton in Liverpool on the 24th November:— Tax or Cortoy 1x LivERPOOL ON THE 247TH or No- VEMBER, COMPARED WitH 1853. Amer. Mara’m. Yn. E. India. Men of all grades and pursuits are roused by forcible and eloquent appeals, are laying aside, for the moment, their wonted avocations, to listen orto act. Mutual dangers mutual sympathies; and those who cannot share in the former anxiously look towards the East for the success so much to be desired. The present state of suspense is doubly felt, as it inter- rupts Ne te usually made at this time of the year, for the spring demand. It is well that the sound conditicn of the commercial classes enables them to bear the momentary stop in trade without serious conse- quences, Previous to the American accounts, per Arabia, purchases of manufactured goods, offered at low prices, were made on speculation. These have cearcd, o the expectation that a more ample supply of cotton will be received than previously calculated upon. Caution is the watchword of most people La in trade; every one restricts his transactions to the most urgent wants, and this cannot fail to have a good effect in a prospec- tive point of view, whilst, however, it increases the pre- sent dullness and gloom. In these times of ‘‘bank suspensions” and shin- plaster financieriag, when every broker in Wall street who can raise a few thousand dollars to par- chase # litte “ultimate security” is owner of a bank or two in Indiana or Illinois, the following descrip- tion, from the Cixcinnati Commercial, ot Western pat king and of an int=rview betwene a bank officer avd a bill holier will be appreciated: — Uurimats Seccrity—Tne Stock Banks or Ixprawa ‘Dunn If th thin itil to justify the f ere Was an; jus the business ‘comuranity towarda the “tree beni’? of Indiana, or to convince the people of that State of the unreliable character of those institutions, the letter of the Hon.
