A communication was received from the Comptroller, refusing to pay Mr. Fowler, Deputy County Clerk, $200, which was ordered by the Common Council, for his ser vices as clerk to the Board of County Canvassers. ANNUAL MERTING OF THE EUCLEIAN SOCIETY, was held at Hope Chapel on Wednesday evening, 20th inst. A large audience was in attendance, composed of the students of the University and their friends. to gether with many of the graduates of that institution \ number of ladies lent their presence to make the affair attractive, amd smile applause on the young gentlemen who participated in the exercises. ANOTHER INFERNAL MACHINK EXPLOSION—AN AT- TEMPT TO FIRE THE BUILDING. At about seven o'clock last evening an alarm was given in the building No. 5 Chatham square, by the explosion of an infernal machine, which shook the whole of the upper part of the premises, created great consternation amongst the inmates, and set the place on fire; but by the immediate application of water by the occupants 0 the upper stories, it was acon extinguished. ‘The police were attracted to the premises, and upon examina- tion, a tin box was found, blown apart, and, from its appearance, had contained near a pound of gunpowder. This box had evidently beea ar- ranged for the purpose, «a hole having been found in ita side, into which a slow match had been placed, to set off the powder at a certain time. This ma- | chine had been inserted between the partition of the pocketbook establishment of Solomon Spitzer & Co.'s, on the second floor and the entry, when it exploded and shattered the partition, and set a portion of it on fire. Mr. Spitzer’s workmen ‘had not yet left work, and the explosion gave them great alarm, fearing that some- thing more terrible might yet occur. Capt.
