The Weather—Agricultural Fairs—Contemplated Sale of Suffolk County Court House to the United States Covernmeni—b nnexation- lem Statistics—Rich Men— Colonel Wrights Removal—The Cochituate Bani: Case —Democratic State Convention, ‘The weather, after having been quite cool—not to say coli—with heavy frosts, suddenly became hot as summer on Sunday Jast, apd bas so continued for several days. By good rights we ougnt to have had eterm with the | €qumox, and cool weather afterwards; but we bave had | neither, but a resumption of those dry, acrid, penetrat- | ing heats that were so potent during the “great drought” of July and August, that d{d not destroy anything. It is | as if one had fallen asleep a week sgo, and moved on to | next Angust, The effect on the forests, aud generally, in this part of New England, is yery fine. The frosts had already affected the maples, the beautiful red of the leaves of which were made to contrast admirably with the green of some foliage and the yellow of others, while the whole was viewed through a scorching atmosphere. Thus we have the New fngiand autumn @ month earlier than uenal, and with summer circumstances around it. The various agricultural societies have had excellent weather for their fairs and exhibitions. Those that are yet to act will not, I fear, have good Iuck, as there are pretty strong Indications to day of « change of weather to something of # stormy character. Onr city government bas offered to sell the court house, on Court square, to the United States govern ment, the latter being, se you know, im Want of build ings here for various binds of bosiness pertaining to a highly civilized etate of society—a jail, court rooms, | post office, &e. Should the parties agree, the whole of ‘the national offices here, not connected with the reve- nue department, would probably be concentrated in the building. But why ie the city desirous of seing’ it | mey be atked. Because the place is one of the noisiest in the whole city, and legal gentlemen, including our venerable judges, declare that the clatter and confusion amount toa nuisance of magnitude sufficient to carry terror to the hearts of the stoutest grand jury that ever indicted a chimney that smoked the wrong way. On | the | | one end # Court street, which is the most thronged_ School street, pt the stillest locality in Christendom. Then bout one hundred express offices soncentrated quare, several respectable groggeries, a number of stores cx manufactozies, a stable cr two, and other | concerns that do not sacrifice to Hippocrates. That the | courts have not long since gone mad as the peop'e who | afforded them employment, is one of the stray mysteries | of life. I fancy that some gentlemen who had propos ed to make a good businers out of commissionerships of Duiléings for our common une’e, will just let that | vexerable purchaser of damaged goods know what sort | of a bergoin it le proposed to palm off upon him The matter must be decided by to morrow night. The Bostonians have decided to annex themselves to Charlestown, or Charlestown to themsetves, snd on Mon- | day the people of Charlestown are to vote on the subject ‘The general sentiment is that the decision will be thesame | in the lesser city that it hes been in the greater; but | come dissent from this view. There are stroug opponent: of the scheme over the bridge, and they are working | to prevent its success, The firemen are especially | acre in Boston, and where thitgs occssionally get de to it, ag they do not lke the ifea of coming un iron rule of Bos‘on government. The friends of the edministrstion had their ow: roy, yet it is true that the other side were present iu tofficient force to have had their way if they had con- tidered the game worth the candle. The speech made vy Mr. Usher, warmly condemning the interference of the general government in our State election, last year, won received with great applause, avd no one undertook the defence of the adminireration. The resolutions adopted do not #0 much as allude to the Nebraska bill by name, and altogether they look very mush as if the meragers of the convention were playing off the conci! i dodge. They are very tame to have proceeded from the pen of Lr. Loring, who {e apt to shake the pepper box pretty freely. Ihe nomination of Judge isbap Was a necessi'y, for there was literally no one else to nominate Mr. Bteteon’s nomiration for the Lieut.
