The dears will doubtless hammer away at it again, one of there days, when the market iearagua Transit ad- value of the stock will fuctnste like all other fancies. | ‘At the second board there was not much activity and sot much change in prices. After the adjournment of the Board the following sales ‘ef stocks were made at auction by A. H. Nicolay :— $6,000 d Indispolis RR, let wort. int. added 75 $6,000 8 nd Hocking Valley, eo do 70 $10,600 Maysville and Lexington RR, 2¢ mort do 10 $5,000 Flushing RR, Ist mort 20 shares St. Nicholas Bank.. 7 144 do Buifalo and State Line RR Daring the past two months the stoc Mmavery depressed condition. The prevalence of the gholera, the war in Europe, the defaications of Schuyler and Kyle, have becn the principal causes, and they have ‘Been sufficient to ure up many of the bulls and depreci- ate the market value of fancy stocks to points little dreamed of a few months siace. Lhe appearance of the ebolera was anticipated by many speculators, who ope- seked accordingly; but no one anticipated the defalca- ‘ons of Schuyler and the effects of such an expose. The ‘Dears had the full benefit of that cause, without ealculat- img upon it. There probably hus never been in the bis- tery of stock speculation in this city, euch # combina. tion of circumstances favorable to the bear, interest. At the commencement of the decline prices ruled very high. and the margin, therefore, fora fall wae large. ‘Me inflation was the result of 2 long period of epecala- Mons, and the fanctes had yc .vhed points 0 much beyond Weix rea} value that they could not have been much tong- er suriained by any combination. At that time the causes dove referred to ocenrred, and the fall was rapid. There was no let up to the decline, and most ef the fancies Yambled together. Haiiroad siveks carried others with Wem, but not to the same extent, and the losses have deenenormous. Some of them have not yet reached the jowest depth, while others have fallen immeasurably delow their intrinsic worth. Amidst each panics as have lately been experienced, it is dificult to make dis- timetions; and it is only uponthe return of the second sober thought that the wheat ‘s gathered from the chaff ‘ana proper classification is made. We must condemo ‘the whole class of railroad stocks. Itis merely a mat- tex of time with them all. Thosenow knownto be bad Dave been considered good, and those now considered good will sooner or later prove bad. Aa javesiments, ‘they bave all seen their bestdays. So far as the works are concerned, they are worth ten times more to the eountry than they have cost and cannot be dispensed with. Landed property throughout the Union bay been doubled de value by these works of internal improvement; and if fhe wil bad been directly taxed to pay for their con- struction, 1t would have been fair and just, for the land owners have been, as a class, actually more benefitted than any other, and, as a gencral thing, have paid the east for it. The soil has been largely increased in value, with increased taxation, while those who have built the zailreads have been heavy losers. Unfortunately for the country at large. and ihe progress o! railroads in parti- ealar, most of the stock subscriptions have been made by thore who looked upon them as productive invest- ments. But for this belief very little stock would ever have been taken, and it has been for the protection of thie much abused and doladed class that we have so fre- quently pointed out tke utter impoatbility of deriving Aividends on the capital advanced. ‘This valuable and en- terprizing class of citizens have been swindled by the Salee representations of those who have other onjects fm eonstructing railroads than the productiveness ef the investment. Owners of land along a pro- pored route have manufactured and circulated all sorts ‘ef mtories for the purpose of attracting the attention of thore who have funds seeking profitable employment. ‘The projectors generally take very little stock, and if they Jose what little they do take, the enhanced value ef their lands is an offset an hundred fold. In every section of the country we find men of moderate means have been swindled, by these land epeculators, by some railroad project. With nothing but their money—the result of many years’ hard Iabor—with no interest in ‘the soil to be benefited indirectly, their means have been drawn from them by the false reports and estimates of Sliques of Iandebarks, who have no other motive than to add value to their property by the expenditure of other people’s money. Railroads are very necessary for the growth and prosperity of the country, but they should de built by the landed interest. As investments for capital they never will be productive, and if the land is taxed directly to pay for their construction, there can be no swindling by the sale of stock. Millions upon millions of dollars have been sunk in railroads, by indi viduals who have made the investment solely with the view of receiving regularly semi-annual dividends. The brokers do not like to touch Indiana or Mlinois money, and will not do so except at a large discount, and it would therefore be advisable for the public to refuse ‘all issues of banks in those States. Holders of suoh bills would do well to get rid of them as soon as possible; but @o not submit to much of a shave. The onty really safe way is to touch not, handle not, and a few weeks would abut up helf of the shaving shops of the West. If people will continue to take such trash, the supply will keep ‘ap, and ultimately serious losses be realized. It is easy ‘enough to put down such a currency, and those who lose anything have no one to blame but themselves, The Sailures thus far have been as follows: — Bank of Washtenaw. Erie and Kalamazoo Bank Bank of Milford ” and Mechanics’ Bank, Memphis Bank of Carthage, N. Y. Brovers’ Bank, Ogdensburg, N. The President of ti hank has failed, and an assignment has been made. The securities of the bank are as follows :— Bonds and mortgeges Rew York State stock Do. do, United States stock, Greulation ‘The s ger city are of opinion 1 securi ‘Ties are such ar to warrant a redemption of the bills at wr very near par. It will depend very much on the cha acter and value of the mortgages, as well as the manner im which they are disposed of. If, under the aasiga ment, « forced sale of them ix made, they may bring something below par; in which case the margin of $703, tegetber with the premium whieh the stocks will vriog may -ecure the dill-hokiers a par redemption. It shoald also be remembered, that the mortgages are not received at the department at their full estimeted value; there is ® 80 a margin left them for the eecurity of the bill hoki. @r. In view of all the cireumetances, therefore, it is ad visable to hold on the bills for a few days.
