Knox “monopolized the hat trade of forms a falec cape, which adds to the effect of the whole. ‘The Mercie ia somewhat like a talma, but wonderfully improved by gores being inserted round the edge, whieh give a graceful fulness to the garment. Like the eeharpe, it is trimmed with stripes of embossed ribbon running longitudinally from the point of each gore, which is concealed by a bow of aribbon, to the The mantilla is bordered with deep rich fringe, wavy softnese and lustrous beauty add to it another charm. The Rachel, another pretty scarf maatilla, de- wives its name from the world-renowned French trage- denne. It is made of silk, and trimmed with several raches of ribbon, and closes in front near the waist, in ‘the form of a heart. HEAD-DRESSES. Some of these are magnificent, being formed of velvet and gold lace, and trimmed with scarlet poppies, inter: Went with golden sprays; others of pointed blonde and marabout feathers, tipped with gold. Some are pointed im the front, dla Marie Stuart, and have clusters of moss roses and japonicas glowing through the transparent eloud of lace that envelopes them with all the art of | rage, studied carelessness. For elderly ladies, » graver style prevails; fowers are eschewed, and lace and ribbon are ‘the only trimmings used. Wreaths of flowers, with | pendent sprays, and wlanc ing berries, and a bewildering variety of colors, belong exclusively to youth, and are mever seen to better advantage than when gleaming | through masses of clustering curls, or resting on glossy felds of simply braided hair. ‘The superabundance of face trimmings would seem to preclude the possibility of curls for the next haM year; but fashion laughs at obstacles, and so we are to ha the trimmings. and the qurls together. The old fashioned friz puffs that | | were worn about twenfy years ago, are coming into | fashion again, and promise to be popular, for they retain | the eurl much longer than other styles, and are by many | considered becoming; still they are quaint and formal, | Deer, and inferior in grace to the willowy ringlets, and in | tir | tant Desuty to the simple dignity of the classic style. How- | Ne ever, what is fashionable will always be considered be- | and eoming, and so we doubt not many flowing locks will b | shorn of half their length; short hair being an indispen- | able requisite for these ‘revivals.’ Three or four 0 these friz puffs are worn on each side of the face, non eoming below the car; and when worn under a hat, a braid called the Grecian braid invariably accompanies them. The back hair is arranged in the French twist or casque style, and the ends are folded round, some smooth, some cable twist, and some Grecian braid. For evening parties flowers will be added, natural or artificial, accord- ing to taste, the natural flowers being the more recherche, ‘but at the same time more transient. ‘Tax Census Rerorns.—Mr. Kennedy, late of the Census | OMice, at Washington, has memorialized Congress for the ‘use of the statistics of manufactures which have not en- tered into the substance of the publications ordered by Gongresa to be printed. These rejected materials were propared by Mr. Kennedy, and he deems them of value mafficient to justify their publication on private account. As these materials are not to be used by the government, and as Mr. Kennedy has the disposition, capacity and ex- perience to make them available to the coun- ‘try, it is to be hoped that Congress will at once accede to | his request, and thus enable him to represent our condi- tion and progress in manufactures and the mechanic arts, as he has our advance in population and agriculture. ‘The Cleaning of New York. AMOUKT OF DIRT REMOVED—THE MUD OBSTACLES— COST OF THE PROCESS OF PURIFICATION—AN- | OTHER GRAND SWEEP OF BROADWAY. ‘The great work of attempting to clean the city is still vigorously prosecuted by Mr. Downing, City Inspector, and his coadjutors. We publish to-day a carefully eompiled table, froma glance at which our readers will Beable to see the extent to which the work has been carried on in every ward, the cost of this necessary sani- tary process, and the great obstacles which the men had to eontend against in the shape of hardened garbage heaps, frozen filth ponds, ice, and dust. It will be per- eetved that upto the 18th instant fifty-four thousand doads of dirt were removed, and, as far as an estimate can be made, an equal quantity was carried off during the past seven dayr. This is not more than we expected from the vast quantities of filth, snow, ice, and liquid mud, which Jay on our highways when the work commenced. So far the wards situated up town have derived more benefit from the cleaning process than those in the lower part of the city. This is accounted for in great measure by the fact that most of the dirt carmen re- side far up town, and preferred working near home; bute; ‘the heaps are demolished and disappear in their own neigh- Dorhoods, we may expect a mighty concentration of those Trish ‘‘reformers”’ at our doors, who will work until they go far to please everybody, and thus effect far more than ‘any so-called political reformer of the day. Owing to ‘the great depth of the mud on the streets it has been found impossible to flourish a broom yet. We had to de- pend for relief at first upon the pickaxe, the shovel and the crowbar, and when they were laid aside the high winds of last week came and whisked the dast down our ‘throats, and into our ears, our noses, our pockets, and our parlors, so that very little of it remains now. The following is the table alluded to above:— DIRT AND GARBAGE REMOVED. ‘WUREE DAYe TO Mancu 11. WEEE ENDING MARCH 18, Fare F ¥ is Pe f 8 4 Re i HE PEER GEE E BE rors Peg H r gin: doibia ?
