Within the year our waccess was such that we resolved to raise the, price to two cents. It still grew and prospered. The paper did well at this price; but as we found it would be sufficiently remu- mrative at two, we shortly afterwards returned to our old rates, at which it has remained ever since, Since that time California and Australia have been opened to emigrants—gold has poured in Bpon us—banks have multiplied—the price of almost every commodity has risen—the HeraLp alone bas grown to nearly three times its former size, and contains more than four times its former amount of matter at its old price. The wages ot printers, the salaries of clerks, the @ompensation of editors and reporters, and even the price of paper have all increased. Messrs. Persse & Brooks, who, since we began to publish the Henatp, have a eeived from us upwards of a million of dollars, have grown fat and wealthy, and insist upon an advance. We are compelled to submit, for where could we get a thousand reams of peper a week? Our circulation is enormous; itis in fact only limited by the power of ma- ehinery to print the paper. This is a strange era in the world’s history. Hverything seems to be going ahead so fast, that one can hardly overcome a port of undefined impression that some terrible eonvulsion lies ahead. Johnson, formerly Attorney General of Pennsylvania, and a brother, we believé, of the late Governor of that State, died a few days ‘ago. in Washington, a most melancholy death. He had been picked up from the gutter in a state of intoxication and sent to the vagrant department of the*work house, where he ended his sad career. Lately he was an active coad- jator with Caravajal, in his dlibustering opera- tions along the Rio Grande, and conducted for some time a “manifest destiny” newspaper at Brownsville, in Texas, opposite Matamoras. Attracted to Washington, like thousands of others, by the chances of making money out of his party, he attempted a monthly Democratic Review, the first number of which, fall of fili- bustering odds and ends, was the last. But there, among the fatal temptations of Washing- ton, he remained, a Pennsylvania politician and .® Pennsylvania drunkard; and his fate is but the fate of hundreds of others destroyed among the hells and dens of Pennsylvania avenue.
