| i d: | a ! cs posing force arrayed by the Maine law men at the Iast election, the friends of constitutional ~eeruples would carry the day. We have’ already declared our readiness to acquiesce in a prohibitory measure when it shall have become a law of the land, But should the temperance party carry through the Legislature such a stringent measure as we hear they bave in hand, and should Governor Seymour veto it oa constitutional grounds, we are not sure whether we should not afford him our support. We have from the first opposed all sumptuary laws. We regard them as an ar- bitrary and intolerable interference with the ivate liberty of the citizen, and, as such, have Yariably eet our face against them. If, as in the case of the Maine law, we have, in view of @ great and growing evil, deemed it right to Proclaim our acquiescence in an experiment suggested by popular excitement, we do not mean thereby to intimate any want of steadi- ness in our adherence to the great principle on which we started. This is our position on the Maine law question. That of Governor Sey- mour we have already sketched; and we must say we think it likely he will verify our sur- mise. Tue Prosect or a Mexican Treaty.—In another column will be found an article from the Courier and Enquirer, confirming our ex- clusive intelligence respecting the project of a treaty which Mr. Gadsden has sent home. No one will be surprised to see that the Courier denies the truth of the part it proves. Our cotemporaries generally prefer denying a state- ment to copying it. They had rather deprive their subscribers of usetul intelligence than eenfess their own lack of enterprise. One of them advises us to confine our “fabrications” to our own circulation. We certainly do not claim for any statement appearing in this paper @ greater degree of reliance than we demand for the tables of our circulation. An Abolition Lecture by a Negro, The fourth lecture of the course before the New York Gity Anti Slavery Society wo" delivered on Tuesday even- ing, by Charles Lenox Remond, of Salem, M. olored man. Remond’s father wasa highly respectable colored gentleman, and kept an oyster cellar in Salem. He ao- cumulated a handsome property, and gave his children « good education. Charles, the lecturer of the evening, was educated abroad, and feels immensely superior to persons of hisown celor. He is one of the most strenuous oppo: nents of those theoretical abolitionists who are in favor of doing away with slavery, but who are not willing to re- ceive negroes at their soirces, introduce them to the so- ial circle, and give them their daughters in marriage. Remond is abont thirty years of age; not exactly a black map, though very near it:the ie well /ormed, and appears to be possessed of some intelligerce. At the hour appointed, the Tabernacle was occupied by some three hundred persons, among whom were John P. Bale, E. ©, Stansbury, andj other free-soil luminaries, There was also s pretty fair rprinkling of colored people; but it was noticed that they sat by themrelves, not mix: img with their white admirers. Of the persons in at tenderce about one half were women. The lecturer on entering the ball was received with applause. Several notices were given out by the President of she society, Mr. Lewis Tappan, and others, when Mr. Remond com- menced his lecture by announcing that when he was solicited to speak on this occasion his sub bare was inquires This was hardly necsssiry, - wherever his complexion was ween it might omed. In askieg the attention cf the audience % ubjest of the condition of the “Dirfranshised Amo ricanr,”’ he woala attempt to prove that the law was un just to them, and m wrong to our common country. ‘Many perecns who did not believe in radical abolitionism ‘were willing to give the colored citizens all the rights a privileges of white men He never considerei results when be was to co right. and he thonght that the imme diate ean of all che alaves fo this oouctry, and ‘te enfranchisement of all free men of color, was right fm the sight of God and man. He was here to ask for this. The writers on the subject of Cstholic emancips tion in Irelanc have held that persons disfranchised were slaves; anc this w: untey; 8 millions of slaves, !ewad Of three millio: y. Itis tree that in som man has a right to vote; bat hts vote is generally s quali fied ore The question was a mest important one, and ‘wes so considered North snd South. To prove th s posi tion the lecturer read an article from the Richmo:d ) Examiner on the svbject. He thought that he show rome feeling on the subject, aad he this point firet: that all bir fellow citizens rhould acknowledge the importance of this anbjact. ‘The reason why they did not so think was because it was fasbionable to treat the anti-rlevery question with iniif ference. This was owing 10 education ard passion If it ‘was the facy that the free colored men were disfranchised because the whites were indifferent to the r situation it was a poor apology for a rs handed outrage. He koew however. that any wrong done to the colored men injury to the common weal. Ia all couatrivs pre. jpsicee against races existed. There was » prejadice in is country against Irishmen; but the lecturer bad rever heard that it distranchised them, or injured them tc a great extent socially, The same prejasise ox feted against colored rep; an ‘the ooly reason for their isement in the Northern States was caus the fact that it was demanced by tae South a quierced in by the Noith. The disfranchissmect eolored man in the No:th was the brother of «avery in the South. It is anid that the passport to political privi: loges was patriotiem. He would attempt to make out » case of patriotiem fer his free colored brethren, ani Gai proposed that every person—huoker or o:her- really five wise—rhou'd jom in the endeavor to throw off the shackles which pow bound them. In reading a | recently del.vered aere, the lec:arer had notice: t! In Pennsylvania there were frem thirty-five to forty thousand free colo ed Citizens. Mex id mt say that colored men were all Wash- , Franklins, or Lafayettes. He thought they were very much like white men under similar circamstances. He thought he could make out tha’ they were patriotis, ‘and adverted to their services in the warof the Revolu thon. They were patriots in the hour of need— apy man can be a patriot when it costs him nothimg.
