ae ‘tame ee PT OT ES ES, SC TT AE ARG the rersions of the Legislature, but he did mot become a recognized member of Albany resevcy until his removal to Albany, about 1622. when he was sppointed Adjatant Gone- val. In 1823 be was elected Comptroller by the Legislature, having been nominated in caucus by & large m»jority over Gen. James Tallmadge. Mr. ‘Van Buren who was then at Washington, was de- sirous that Mr. Marcy should be appointed in pre- ferevce to Gen. Tallmadge. Mr. Marcy from that time became a full member of the Albany regency ‘and « promoter of the Van Buren dynasty. He had, however, as early as December, 1819, co-operated with Mr. Van Buren in writing » pamphlet in favor of the election of Rufus King to the Benate of the United States. The early members of the Albany regency, as meow recollected, are Martin Van Buren; Roger Bkipner, o State Senator and U. 8. District Judge; Obsries E. Dudley, » man of wealth and amisvle ebaracter, afterwards State Senator, U. 8. Sgnator, and Mayor of Albany; Judge Cantine, State Sena- tor, and one of the editors of the Albany 4r- gus; Benjamin Knower, a hatter, aod Presi- @ent of the Mechanics’ and Farmers’ Bank ef Albany, and the most important man ef the group in devising and carrying out plans. To these mames were afterwards added to the regency, ‘Willem L. Marcy, Benjamin F. Butler, Silas Wright, the Gerrit Y Lansing, Edward Livingston, the younger, Era-tus Corning, Edwin Croswell, Azariah C. Flagg, and others, as they respectively came to Albany 48 Biate officers or citizens showing pecuNar sagacity and a faculty for keeping secrets. : Benjamin Knower we have mentioned above as an important man in the group controlling the demo- eracy of the State. Mr. Knower was a self-made wan, remarkable for his good sense and sterling in- tegrity. He amassed a handsome fortune 33 4 hat- ter and dealer in wool, and was lgng President of the bonk of which Mr. T. W. Olcott, the accom- plished financier, was the cashier. The only office Mr. Knower would accept was that of Treasurer of the State, and in that office he had the con- fidence of wen of all parties. As a member ef the Albany regency, which. genetally met in a private room at his residence, Mr. Kpower’s counrel, particularly in important and diffi- cult questions, was much sought sfter and esteemed. Mr. Van Buren and Judge Skinner were daily seen in their daily walks going to and coming from his hence, rarely attempting to curry out plans for the promotion of democracy and the success of the re- gency which were not concocted or approved by Mr, Knower. "The first efforts of Mx. Van Buren on the organi- gation of the regency were directed to prevent the re-election of Governor Clinton, in 1820. In this he ‘was not successful, although the Vice President of the United States, Daniel D. Tompkins, was brought ferword as the bucktail candidate. The majority of Governor Clinton was small, (only abont,1,400,) and the appointing power fell into the hands of the friends of Mr. Van Buren by the election of a ma- jority of bucktails to the Legislature. Thus Governor Clinton was powerlesz—indeed, a msjority of the Senate was opposed to him thronghont his different terms as Governor. The adoption of a new constitution, in 1822, threw @linton into private life; but, in consequence of the sympathy created for him by his removal trom the Benorary office of Caral Commissioner, he was elect: ed governor in 1824, and again in 1826, finally dying, ia 1828. All thistime the Van Buren dynasty re- tained their hold upon the Senate, where they had a mejority until the year 1839, when they were com- pelled to surrender the appointing and legislative power to the whigs, under Governor Seward. They recovered their power in 1842 by the election of Governor Bouck end a democratic Legislature, but were defeated by the divisions in the party in 1846, and finally restored again to power by the election of Governor Secymour and 2 democratic Legislature Jast year. Mr. Van Buren became kuown as @ national poli tician in 1821, when he was elected to the United States Senate, and took his seat in Congress, in De- cember of that year. His subsequent career as Sen- stor, Governor, Secretary of State, Minister to Eng- land, Vice President, and President of the United States, are too well known to require recapitulation here. Our object has not been to sketch his politica life in all its phases, but to show tbat for the last thirty-five years the democracy of this State have been called upon and compelled to fight the battles of the Van Buren dynasty and to avenge the griev- ances of this ambitious leader and his family. The coming election, it appeers to us, is to decide whether, by the triamph of the soft shells, or by that faction being able to show a plurality over the hard shells, the democracy of the State are still deter- mined to sustain the Van Buren dynasty. Tue Late Generar TALLMapGé AND THE Ampnioan Isstitute.—A morning paper on Satur- day, after stating the principal facts contained in the biographical notice of Gen. Tallmadge in the Fivraxp the day previous, adds, that he was one of the fonnders of the American Institute, which is p+ correct, although the fu-titute doubtles4 Swes much of its success to the zealand active service of Gen. Tallmadge in ite own cause for about twenty years, since his first election 2s President, in the year 1832, more than four years aftor the Institute was founded. ‘The organization of the association took place at Tammany Hall, in January, 1828, when a constitu- tion was adopted, and Col. William Few clected President. He was one of the framers of the con- stitution of the United States, at that time repre- senting the State of Georgia in the federal couven- tion. He died in this city, (where he resided for many years, and was Preeideut of the City Bank,) in 1828. He was succeeded as President of the Amcrican Institute by Jobn Macon, who was one of the persons named in the act of iavorporation, in May, 1529. Vir. Mason resigned in 1932, when Gen. Fallaadze was elected, and hae since been annually reelected, excepting two years, when he decliaed, snd Hon. Mahlon Dickerson, of New Jersey, formerly United States Senator, and Secretary of the Nuvy, was chosen to succeed him, 4 Mr. Dickerson retiring, Gen. Tallmadge consented ( act aguin as President, and bas since been unani- monsly re-clected. It is a curious fact in the public fife of Gen. Tallmadge, that be was always miccossfu! | when candidate for election by the people, for atiy of the public tations he hag held. ‘The principal persons engaged in the formation of the American iustitote, in January, 1928, were Col. William Few, John Mason, T. B. Wakeman, Peter | SH. Schenck, John 8. Yates, John A. Slidell, James Lynch, Joseph Bivat, Ralph Lockwood, and others, fow only of whom, besides the three last named, are still living.
