We have already noticed the arrest, in New Or- leans, of a person supposed to have been in some way connected with the murder of Mary Ann McEl- roy, in New York, the person arrested calling himself Judson Bailey. He wrote to Mr. Claytun ia New York, pretending that he would be able to procure the arrest of the murderers if funds were advanced to him. Mr. Clayton wrote to him in reply, tha; he had already been at great expense, in the way of advertising, faneral expenses, &¢., and that he felt he was not authorized in out more unless with something like assurance that there is some de- gree of certainty in its effecting something. He reminded the writer, however, that a reward of $1,000 had been offered by the city authorities, and $500 by some friends and himself, on. conviction of the culprits, The New Orleans Chief of Police having pre- viously received telegraphic despatches from New York touching the matter, made his arrangements so as to arrest Builey when he applied for the letter at the Post-oflice. When searched, the following letter, alleged to have been received from one of the parties coucerned in the murder, was fouud on his New Orteans, July 2, 1853. I speeitwlly, bi a Some of the police authorities think this letter a forgery, written by Bailey (or whatever his name may be) to himself, as vart of a scheme to extort money irom Mr, Clayton. ‘The suspicion receives confirmation in the fact that Bailey's writiag is very much like that in “ Big Sorrel letter ; and woen that letter was read to him with a request that he would copy it, he wrote the word tried “ iride,” and the word “ foo” as in the original. Certain it is that he either knows something about the murder of Miss Meliroy, or had engaged in a most desperate tempt to swindle Mr. Clayton.
