Mr. Hmaw KercnuM reoonded the resolutions, and re joiced that Judge Jones had hyed the full measure of ha- man life, leaving to the bar the example of an almost perfeot career. Judge Jones was remarkable for untiring industry, never filing memory, and inexhaustible learn- fog. Ho was alio remarkable for his high sense of per- sonal honor and intogrity, and bis amiability of charac- ter. In all his experience Mr, Ketchum never knew @ lawyer who was so painstaking, who made so good a brief Judge Jones. He ever pre-ented the best resulta of latest and freshest investigation. In consul.ation, never impatient. and atways listened to the ‘st members of the bar with respact. Abo i he was a professed and a sincere Christian, Mr. Ketebum tru-ted t) larger meeting of the bar would be held on a future ocoasion fo adopt measures in respect to the memory of the deceased judge, The following members of the profession were appoint- ed & cowmittee for this purpose :—Edward Sandford, Hiram Ketchum, Gerardus Clark. George Wood, Daniel Lord, Charles ©’Conor, William Kent, Francis B. Outimg, Beverly Robina, and J. Lorimer Graham. The Central Park, MEETING OF THE PROPERTY HOLDERS. Yesterday evening, a mecting was held at the Columbia Tavern, situated at the corner of Eighth avenue and Broadway, of persons holding the property that is intend- 0 to be used for the purpose of a Central Park. There * was come delay after the aseemblage had collested, he- fore a chsisman could be appointed. Mr. Tracy was Propored, but he deslined the honor, denying, as had been observed, that he had anything to do with the cali- img of the meeting. It should be mentioned that the mames appended to the meeting were Tenyk and Folsom. A call was made for them. but it appezred that they had met yet arrived, Mr. Brett proposed to a gentleman Standing by Mr. Townshend, = property holder, that he sbouid act as chairman, which was duly propo:ed aad s:cox ded, and sgreed to nem con. Mr Townsend, on taking the chair, wished to know ‘the object for which the meeting was convened. From iw fo mosion that he bad received he coacluded it to be for the following purpose, namely : io 7 the holders of the property to ve taken for the Central Pak were to be compensated fox their lots. If he hada fair equiva- Jent he should be willlug to give up the lots that he huld, but if he was to be compelled to sacrifice his property for less than it was worth. his patriotism would not go pofar. If be did not get a fair price he should object to the park It. was muca to be regretted that the gentle. men who had called the meesing, were uot present to @ouduet it regularly He was now prepared to hear the remarks of any goutleman upon the subject. Mr. Brett referred to Mr. Cooley’s report. That report had extimeted the price of the ground for the Ceacral Park and Jones’ Wood at over two millions. From what he could make out, he should jncge that, instead of oost- ing the amount proposed by Cyoley, the Contra! Park alone vould oust six millions of doliars, and toerefore ho ‘ought it right to ask the meering whether they would S400 to allow the property to go at sueh price, He con. dered that Mr Cooley bad only made rough gues at e price. Mr. Bret: then maa hort aceount of the Dbusivess in its progress through the Legislature. It seemed to him before they took it the parties possessiog the Wood shouid be consulted. It was not right that theze should be a law allowing property to be taken without first consulting the legal owner. The land com- prizes about one thousand lots, whieh willsooa be re- quired for ihe accommodation of tne numbe: cf persons ewigrating to this city. He thought it would be cetter to puta scop to it until they gota nev corporation, when they would better know what they were drivingat.” ‘He bad s emall property there, and should like the full veluecfit. I: may. perhaps. turn out all rignt, but he ‘tought it necessary that they should take same action qm the matter. to see whether their property «as to be taken fram them. He was opposed to the ground being taken at all, a3 too much land iroa tae Genire cf the island Moxeover, the people re-iding in would not eajoy the Park, but the rising gecersion. It was like a wan depositing a certain sum yearly in a bankfora child uovil it was of age who ‘would spend it quicker than the father had suved it, 20 with this ; it would take six miiliooe to buy the ground. How much, he would ask, wouid it take to lay acd plentit out. ard how long a time? That was a fem thet would take a eee lawyer to solve, at twenty years. They would probably take algo Jones’ Woods: it they took «o many parks, it would take more money to pay the tax fer one park thaa the people would be willing to shoulder. Berides, hereafter t will be complained that thiacity was cut short aud Tnpited by this park, which would eopfine the amount of population within certain limits when the neigoder- ing cities would get the ascendancy over them. The Teasove were very numerous why they should not allow the ground to be taken without some defence. If it was Jost now, it would not be redeemed a; Dr. Mourrny said it could bs well to know what course ‘they were to purs' It wou'd be well, in order to have concert of action, + certaia parties delegated to form a comparative estimate of the value of the ground ‘now claimed by the city. This could only be a meeling for organizaticn. Mr. Breit moved that a committee be sppointed to @raw up resolutions and bring them before the next meeting for action, showing who was for and ho against ‘the Centra! park; that committee to eonsist of seven per- 008. Mr, Rows seconded the resolution, aud moved that the @ommittee should be nowinsted by the meeting. Mr Townenxnp said that. on looking to theact, he found that there war no option ieft to them. Unless they could gt It repealed the park must be there, The object of @ meeting. therefore, could not be that. It wis then that an estimate of the value of the land should g to the act he raw thit this also 4 for, power having been given t> the eom- mbsioners appointed for that purpose to adjudge the value. So the meeting sould not have beea assembled for that purpose, There was @ provision hie wise wade, by which thos: who considered them elves agrieved could apply against their decision to the Supeme Court. The same course as in the present act had al ways been adopt. ed with respect to the valuation of land, for it was guar- antied by the constitution that private prope:ty could not be taken without due compensation. For these rea- sens. he thought it would be useless to form a commit- tee for the vaination of land. He saw ne reason brought forward why they vere now assembled, and thovght it altogether a very ill coasidered thing ‘For his own part, he bad failed in finding out the object for which they were met. After some discussion. Mr. Bret withdrey his resolu- nd the following was proposed by Mr Townsnenp:— @ committee of seven persons report to a future what, if any, action should be taken in reverence mitral Park. Mr. To, Dr. Murphy, Mr. Tracy, Mr. MeCoy, Mr. Brett, Mr. Murray, and Mr. Tqwnshend, were appoiuted said committee. Mr. Levy propcsed that 2 committee of five bs appoint. €2 fer appraising the property. This was objected to by Mr. McCoy, who said that the commissioners were au- thorized to do ro, and if parties were not satisfied they eould go to the Supreme Court. Pesives, a committee eould not be expeci«d to undertake such a work without being paid. It would be better that each property owner should appraise his own property, and hand in the list to the mittee that had been appointed. Mr. Bret propored as an amendment that it be a com- mittee of five, to make an average appraisement of the value of the lots, which was carried by a rhow of hands; bat ultimately it was resolved that this last resolution should Ke over, and the meeting adjourned sine die. House Painters’ Society. A STRIKE FOR HIGHER WAGES. A mass meeting took place, last evening, at Military Ball, in the Bowery, of the New York practical house painters. Thos. Sunderland was calied to the chair, and Soseph Rogers acted aa secretary. The main object of the meeting, announeed by the President, was sitiply to organize a protective umioa. and io have every man sign his name to the roil who wae in favor of two dollars» @ay, commencing from the 1st of March up to the lat of November, snd from Noveraber up to March following fourteen shillings a day. A number of workmen are working st fourteen shillings # day, and soma men in ibe same shop at two dollars, A committee was appointed to,drew up resolutions to be submitted to the meeting. The committee retired, and after am absence of half-an-hour, returaed with the fol Josing ier olution: — Resclved, That the resolution din Ma ‘Dosseo to give two dolarsa day ber four mont!
