FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Arnie MONEY MARKET. Tavrspay July 21—6 P. M. ‘There was more ac.ivity to day among the lead'ng fan- ‘eles. New Jersey Zine, Floreace Plank Road, Cumber- land, Parker Vein and Erie, were the favorites of opera- ‘tors, and transactions were msde to some extent. Prices were, however, much unsettled. and the market was feverish and fluctwating. At the first board Crystal Palace went up 3 per cent; New Jersey Zinc, 4; Nicara- ua, 1; Parker Vein, 3{; Erie Railroed, 3<; Stonington, 3%. Florence and Keyport Plaok Road declined % per ‘ont; Sixth Avenue Railroad, 34; Cumberland Coal, %. Dolly Hide Copper stock sold at 634 per ovat. A variety ‘of local bank stocks were sold in small lots; railroad bonds contmue quiet, there appearing no aaxlety on the part of holders to sell. At the Minieg Board there was "ore busisess than usual, We quote the following sales:— 200 sha Parker Vein... 3124 250 sha Conrad Hill Cr, 114 400 Bohemian Copper. 43¢ 500 Holle-Hide Copper 614 100 MoOullock Gold 190 73; 100 Ulster Lead...b30 23; At the close, for Phoenix Gold 134 bid 13 asked; Ma naesas Copper, 13{ bid, 2 asked; Mineral Coal, 23 bid, 24 asked; Potomac Copper, 134 bid, 13 asked; Middle- town Lead, 134 bid, 15¢ asked; North Carolian Copper, 8% bid, 0 asked; MoCullock Gold, 73, bid. 714 asked, ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port today, amounted to $548,219 66; payments, $192,146 97—balance, $7.250,696 32 The above recsipts were entirely frem duties, aud it is the largest amount ever reosived im one day at the Custon House of this port, This sum is equal to the average monthly receipts at the Custom House of either Bo:ton or Philadelphia. To have given this large revenue froin duties, the va'ue of dutiable goods entered must have been nearly two mil- lions of dollars. At auotion to-day, Mr. Simeon Draper sold the Afty tons of copper ore from the Dolly-Hide Mine at $4 70 for every one per cen! per ton of copper. The richness ave rages thirty per cent. This sale. therefore, brings $141 per ton of ore. It is deliverable at Baltimore, » favorable point for the company. The Comptroller has postponed the time for the sale of | the Hudson and Berkshire Ratlroed until the 15th day of September uext. ‘The Readiag Railroad Company have made a dividend 0° three and a half per cent on the preferred stock of the company, and of three per couton the common stock, payable on and after the 3d of August. b. The oapital steck of the Nev York and Harlem Rail- road Company has not been enlarged fifty per cent sincs the payment of dividends commenced as stated by ove of our cotemporaries. Upon the receipts of 1849, $319,000, the company paid the first dividerd at the rate of four per cent per annum, in the February following. The road was thea complete to Dover, eighty miles. The stock of the company then stood $1 600 000 of | preferred stock and $3,600,000 of old stock, making in the azgregate $5,000,000 of capital stack, and a debi of about $1,000,000, making the ospital stock and debt about $6,000 000; then the company declared it to be s four per cent stock, Subsequently the company determined to carry the road to Chatham Four Corners, to complete the connection with Albeny, and for that purpose issued extension cor- tifcates to the amount of $2,000,000 one million of which has been converted into stock, and the other mil- ion has not been converted, and wiil not be converted at the present market value, in view of the present pros- perity of the road from Dover to Chatham, and that they receive seven per cont. It is not, therefore, very likely that they will give that up for stock at four per cent, when theyare receiving seven. The stock bas been increased only $1 000,000, which is but twenty per cont on the capital stock, and is now $6,000,000, (instead of $5,000,000 in 1849,) upon which dividends are paid. Now let us see the increase on the ineome of the road, as compared with this small in- erease of capital, in 1849. They were, for the first six months of 1849, $191,718, against $461,808 for the firat six months of 1853, which is an increase in the income derived from the road of neaijy two hundred per cent, while the increased capita! stock of the company has been only twenty per cent, to say nothiog of the surplus receipts accumulating and increasing from year to year _ @urirg that period. The directors of this ecmpany ought, aud have the ability, derived from the income o this road, to place the entire capital etock of this com pany, $6,000 000, upon the fuoting of over eight per cent stock. The following report of D, D. Owen, Esq, United State Geologist, of the analysis of the Parker Vein Coal, from the mires of the Parker Vein Company, om George's Creek | | $2000 US 6'«762..b3 11636 Valley, Maryland, will be read with interest by those owning stock in this company, or in any way counected with ooal companies in that section of the Cumberland ecal fields — Parxke Vern Coat Company. Sm—The result of my analysis of the Parker Vein coal, from the main 14 foot bed. as its out-erop in the east side of George's Creek Valley, gave, No 1. Parker Coal. No. 2, Cleary Coal. 14 foot bed 9 foot bed. : 08 0.00 Other volatile matter 14.89 17.24 Farthy matter, (ash 338 624 Fixed carbon. DosL77 45 100 00 100.00 Specific gravity.............. 1281 1305 I_ have placed it in juxtaposition with an analysis of W.R. Johbson. of the vine foot bad, which crops our in fhe eastern slope of Dau’s Mountain, in Pre-ton Hul, Erie Ct Hae esas! Ti roel ue or six miles up the valley of George’ 10 the northeast, doth being in the sams oral basin. ; I have doze so the better to cou'rast its composition with the Oleary bed of coal, because the economical value of that coal has been fully tested with other American coal now in use. The two bods are very analogous in their composition, as well ax most of the o’her numerous beds of this coal field. It wilibe ovserved, however. that the Parker Veia coal is of superior quatit dy t analysis, containing, as it Coos carbon, ard nearly two per cent less asl ye’ about to show, the Cieary coal is one of the very best an Foals now in use, Compared with the Frost- burg coal, "which, usually gces under the name of “Cumberland Coal,” and which lies &t the extreme northern extremity of the coal region, its superisricy is still moze conspicuous, as the Parker Vein coal conisiny 5) more fixed caibon, and 610 leas earthy mutter or ashes. ‘Thus it appears that the fourteen foot Parker bod in of better qualty then any coal hitherto in use from this cosl district; and the ceean steamers havo yet to test the qualities of the best Maryland coals against the coals of South Wales, since the Parker bed ooutains from two ‘to seven per cent more fixed carboa than the cosly in merket from the asrociate bedy; and al! other thiogs being equal, it is uron this chemical in; at that the durability and efficiency of coal mainly depeads, The Parker Vein coal, in common with most of the coal of George’s Creek Valley, in Maryland, take the very highest rank in the whole list of American coals now ia use for purity, ath, economy and efficlency For evaporsting pene, under equal baiks and weights, George’s Creek Coal stands at tha head of the best Aneri- can coals now in use, geserating from 11 to 12 Iba. of steam, at 212 degrees F , fur ons of combustible matter. For ‘heating power in’a blacksmith’s forge, compared with other bituminous coals, they take the highest rank, doth of these coals being capable uf forming from 18 to ® livks of chain cable. while Scotch coal only makes 10, the Liverpool 13, and the Neacastle 14 links. ‘The above statements supply conclusive evidence of the great superiority of Marker Vein Coal, and explains fully shy the Cunard line of steame:s prefer the cou! from this field to any American coals now in market, though they have yet to be furnished from the best bed and lo celities in this carboniferous basin. Besides the main 14 feet bed on the lands of the Parker Vein Pang A there are at least two workable beds above it and threo below it, and intercalated with the latter there are from nine to ten beds of iron ore, vary- ing from one to five feet in thickness, From the aggregate thickness of all the coat beds, way twelve yards, and the weight of the coal, which averages about fifty-three to fifty-four pounds per cubic foot, in the merchantable condition, end slowing for waste we ‘would have about 68,000 tous of coal, or 1,624,000 bushels in each acre; and asthe beds of coal probably extend over at least 1,200 acros of the lands owned by the Parker ‘Vein Company, in the George's Creek Valley alone, we have the approximate safe estimate of 60,600,000 tons of coal on portion of ihe Company’s property. ‘The mineral resources of the (vorge’s Creek Valley a1 therefore, immense; inderd there never was a coal ant irom region which more fully justified all nesersary out- Jays to obtain the moet direct outlet te the principal markets of the United States. The value and exceliont qualities of ths msin Parker Vein coal will not be fally“anpreciated until it is fairly in market, and It comos in direct veces bs Wi coe 1s. New Harmony, Ispiava, Juno 12, 1853. ‘The Parker Vein Coal Company have now ten steamers ‘on the line betwoem New York and Baltimore, engaged in the transportation of eoni and merchandise between the two cities, A steamer loaves esich port daily, and take full cargoes each*way. The company are new bringing ‘to this market about two hundred tens of coal per day. In a short time its reosipts will be equal to four hundred tona per day. This coal {s from the real “ Parkor Vein,” which is sometimes called the ‘ Big Vein.” It is four. teen feet in thicknoss, and extends through George's Creek Vallay. The demand for the company’s coal f-om Albany and Troy is so grest that all received is immoe- diately sent to these pieces. ‘The Lake Superior Canal and Mining Company havo lately added coveral large and valuable tracts of land, containing prominent and distinct veins of copper, to its mineral estate, ‘and it will ultimately absorb tho richest and best mineral lands in that section of the country. The object of this company fy 16 own and work the most ‘valuable of the copper nnd other mines in the vicinity of Take Suyscioe and where they aay be obiaiaed, to bring ‘the ores to the eity of New Yerk, te smelt, manafacture and sell them to the best advantage. The company have already obtained the right, title and {aterest in upwards of six thousand acres, known as the lands of the ‘Mineral Land Company,” which embraces parts of the mineral range #0 famous for its rich deposits of native copper aud other valuable ores. To show the character of the lands obtained from the ‘‘Mineral Land Company,”’ the follow- ing letter from Mr. C. C. Dougiass, (who is wel! acquaint- ed with the lauds, and whore character for integrity and intelligence is undoubdted,) is eubmitted :— New Yorx. April 22, 1853, SmI heve examined with much care the list of leads belenging to the Mineral Land Company, and find amon, them many valuable tracts for mining, farming an water power. Those in the north part of towash'p Afty- four, north of range thirty-seven west are on the trap range, and contain veins of good surface appearance. ‘They are in the vicinity of the Douglass Houghton and Algonquin mines; they ocoupy the summit of the trap ra>ge, have a fine soil, and are covered with a thrifty growth of maplu, wood, elm, birch, hemlock and pine. The tract: in the southwevt part of the to eaship and range poses exeelient water power. These in the tame townsbip aud range thirty-eight west, are in the vicinity of the Ridge, B»hemian. and Toltes mines. These lands come within the limits of the trap range, and may, when thoroughly explored, be valuable for mining par- poses. They are known to be exovilent farming lands, possessing fine soil and excellent timber. There a leo, xevernl tracts in the vicinity of the Norwich miae, and, judging from their location, they may be found of much mipersl value when thoroughly axplored. There are several mines of much promise in this vicinity besides the Norwich. The latter will ship this season a large amount of nd barrel copper. There also valuable lands on the river, located as they are at the head of steamboat navigation. vossessing a fine and al ut water power, # fine soil and excelient timber. By a judicious expenditure cf money, in im proving the powers, constructing reads from the mines on the east, south, and southwert, to this point, it would svon be the site of a flouri-hing village. There are also several tracts of land belonging to the company which are in the iron cistrict; but my knowledge of that district is not sufficiently minute to enable aie to polat out their true value. There are also several tracts at the head of st Dont navigation, on Bay de Noquecte, of Green Bay, a3 well aa on the main lard near Grand Inland. These are the points where the waters of the two lakes approach exch other. A road or caual of forty: five miles in length would be ali that would be required to open a communi- ction between them. The conntry throug on this route in generally level, presenting no serious obstructions to the cheap construction of a road. The Lake Superior Land and Mining Company has been organized by the election of William H. Le Roy, Esq. President; Hon. Robert J. Walker, Hon. Truman Smith Hon. James C. Forsyth, William H. Le Roy and Simeon Leland, Eaqrs., Trustees; Eugene Ledenteo, Treasurer Robert Benson, Jr., Secretary. The capital is $500,000, Giviced into 100,000 shares of $5 each. * The stock is soll- ing in the market at a premium, and ia daily becoming more generally distributed. The annual meeting of the stockholders of the New York and New England Union Telegraph Company was held in this city on the 20th inst., and the following officers were elected. H. M. Schieffelin, Esq., President, end Messrs John McRepon, F.0 J, Smith, Peter Naylor, T. M. Clark, George N. Laurence, J. A. Lofferts, C. H. Seymour, and A. A. Pettingill, Directors, The Board of 4 Directors, at their meeting held the day previous, de- clared a dividend, payable on the 20th inst., of two per cent on the capital stook of the company.
