. ‘except three. In 1625 Mr. Polk was chosen to the Legislature of Tennessee, and was for two years a member of that body, where his ability in desate and talent for business at once gave him reputation. In August, 1835, being then in his thirtieth year, he was @hosen to represent his district in Congress, and served fourteen years as a member of the House of Representatives, being twice elected Speaker. In 1839 he was elected Governor of Tennessee, after an animated canvass, during which he visited the mumerous counties of that State, and addressed the people on the political topica of the day. He then Proved himself one of the most eloquent and effective stump orators of the day. During his Presidential term he visited the Northern and Eastern States, and on several occasions, in reply to addresses by public men, he responded in eloquent terms, showing great Political, historical and classical knowledge, which commanded the admiration of his hearers. General Taylor made no pretensions to qualifica- tions a3 a public speaker or as a statesman, Born in Virginia, and educated in Kentucky, where he removed when in boyhood, he had few advantages to qualify him for public life. He entered the army in the twenty-fourth year of his age, when he was in the enjoyment of a competency from his occupation as a farmer. But the activity of his mind- and his taste for a military profession led him to prefer the care and privations of a soldier's Tife to the quiet and comforts of a landed proprietor at home. After his accession to the Presidency, Gen. Tay Jor found himself called upon to address the people on several occasions, without previous preparation. ‘His speeches, made with great hesitation and embar- rassment, were brief, but generally to the point and marked with good sense. “I am an old soldier, (we heard him say, in answer to a call of his friends upon him at the White Houe,) and my friends must make great allowance for me. I have not approved of taking military men for high civil stations; but the people have placed me here, and I shall endeavor to discharge-my duty to the best of my ability.” Mr. Fillmore, asa lawyer, member of Congress, and of the State Legislature, acquired a fair, but not brilliant reputation. He was known as a hard work- ing, intelligent public servant, in the various stations he had filled, when he was nominated by the whigs for the Vice-Presidency. Asa debator in Congress, he occupied a highly respectable position, and his character and standing as a leading man in his party im thia State gave him the nomination, which, by the death of Gen. Taylor, elevated him to the Presi- @ency. Asa pubkc speaker he is pleasing and effec- tive, without any great attempt at display. His con- versational powers and address added to his popula- rity as President while he occupied that high station.
