Sunpar, July 10—6 P. M. ‘There was 8 slight buoyancy at the close of the market yesterday, in seme of the most prominent fancies, Nics- ragus Transitjappears to have touched bottom. There ere certain operators in the street, who make it a rule te purchase this fancy at a certain price, and sell it as 00m as a good profit can be realized. Twenty-eight and twenty-nine per cent are about the points. The coal stocks have not moved much either way, aud with the exception of the Parker Vein, the demand continues ex- coedingly limited. New Creek is very well sustained. Very little bas been dome lately in Harlem old stock. Hudson River Railroad stock has been taken up withia the past day or two pretty sharp by some speculators, in aw ticipation, ao doubt, of « courolidation with the ceatra; line of reads, There is evidently some movement xolng on that will result in an arraugement more or lesa advan- tageous to the stockboldars of the Hudsoa River Reilrosd Company. Erie Railroad has been more buoyant since the resignation of Mr. Treasurer Townsend, and it is our impression that the stockholders will be gainers by the changes already made in the board of management. We are desirous of seeing & complete clearing out of the old board of directors, and the election 0” & board, érawn fiem stockholders siong the line of the road. The Central line have made a good move, im selecting a board of management from the most prominent points on the route. Our railroads have been managed too much in Wall street and State street, and itis time a different system was sdopted. We want active, shrewd, experienced, enterprisiog men; and the Contral line, under its present organization, will ba folly up to the spirit of the age. It will be the model rad of the country; and if the stockholders of the Erie railroed do not wake up and put just suca men ia the management of their road, its business will, at so very remote peried, be reduced to » par with the curreat ex pense of operating. Competition between railroad com- panien is daily increasing in strength and virulence, and we must look for such s contest between conilicting lines as will consume the profits of each. Railroads can- not be annibilated, nor can they, like steamboats, change their course of travel. They must be operated whether the stockholders get dividends or not. Competition will therefore, prove fatal to many of them as iavestmeats ‘We cannot escape results such a8 we have named. uuless the construction of conflicting lines is at once arrested. ‘This we cannot accomplish, and must, therefore, be pre pared for the worst. Good managemeut may put off, for a time, the evil day, aud moderate the effect. Econemy of expenditure ia the construction and operation of railroads may lighten competition, and prevent results xo disastrous as those anticipated. Ie fact, nothing short of the most perfect system of management can en- Bure escape from insolvency avd ruin. If the stockbold- ers of the Erie Railroad suppose fur a moment that they can, with the present organization, compete with the Central line, they make a serious mistake, and the sooner they get their eyes open the better for their pockets With s proper beard of directors the Erie Railroad could be wonderfully {mproved in productiveness. It has many elements of success, and they might be made sva'lable Aboard of management should be selected along the line. It requires energetic men, who can at all times be found at prominent points on the soute, able and ready to ad- vance the interests of the stockholders. Wall strest has too long been the scene of operations of the present board; and if some radical revolution is net made in the system now pursued, the stock will not be worth fifty cents on the dollar. Two of the old board have resigned, and it is te be hoped that many more will soon follow. There would then be some chance of @ reform, and the election of new men would infuse new life into the ad ministration of the company’s affairs. The fancier gene- rally continue but moderately active, and the absence of all epeculation accounts for the general uniformity of prices. The season is decidedly ia favor of quiet; and operators, who have not left the city, practica » great deal of self-denial in letting stocks alone.
