IMPORTANT CENSUS STATISTICS, Population of Cities and Towns mm the United States, In 1850, The details of the census of 1860 still remaining unpublished, we have obtained the following abstract of the official returns, showing the aggregate popu- ‘ yation of the towns in the several States, omitting those which are unimportant as to the number of in- habitants. We precede the list by a table of the comparative population, in 1840 and 1850, of those cities and towns in the United States in which the number of inhabitants exceeded ten thousand in 1840. It will be observed that the number of cities and towns in the United States where the population exceeded ten thousand, in 1350, was 63; whereas the number of those places in 1840 was only 32. The term “towns,” or “townships,” it should be observed, ia applied in the non-slaveholding States to subdivisions of counties, which divisions do not exist in the slaveholding States, and in those States the term town is generally applied to the county seat, or other compact settlement :— COMPARATIVE POPULATION OF THE Pop 1850. In 1830, the aggregate population of the same cities was about 878,300; population was therefore nearly quadrupled in these citiesin a period of thirty years. Spring opens riebly upon us. The weather is balmy as hope, and probably as deceitful. There were lots of what the French call ‘April fishea,”’ and we “‘April fools,”? made yesterday, the Post sending up lots of ‘‘our firet men,”’ including several members of the eity govern- ment—‘men of eminent quality’’—to the Common, to inspect a cave that had been discovered on that delight” ful place. It was a capital “sell,” though some cross folks say that it was unbecoming a man who sways affairs like the Colonel. But the public laugh, and the visiters keep “a stiff upper lip” in every case, splendid pearls in the cave dazaled their mind’: ‘The lecture season, that is just drawing to a close, has been a most successful one to the lecturers, and, let us charitably hope, of acquisition to their hearers. Whipple has made three thousand dollars by talking Mr. Burlingame has lectured some fifty times since the first of January. They are clearly trying on the “conciliation dodge” with special reference to the next State election, which willbe a combat dl'outrance, aecording to all appearaneos. ‘The appointment of Mr. Merrick to the place made _va- cant on the Supreme bench by the resignation of Gea. Cushing, rather surprised the publie. It astonished tha democrats, and astonished and annoyei the whigs. Nominally a demoerat, Juege Merrick has been a sort of independent man in politics. He was one of the principal leaders of the anti masonic party, when it was almoat as powerful here as the free soil party now is, Mr. Merrick and Mr. Hallett differed ss to the proper mode of pro- ceeding, and the former led several thousands of the anti-masons over to the whig side, Mr. Hallett fully taking the remainder with him into the democratic ranks, Ip 1839, when the Fifteen Gallon law was passed, Mr. Merrick went over to the democrats, with whom ke has since acted. He was run for Congressin 1842-43. In 1849, when it was understood that the coalition was to be formed that has since accomplished so muck, Mr. Meerick’s friends made a effort to have him neminated for Governor by the Democratic State Convention, in the full belief it he would be chosen; but the friends of fr. Boutwell, who were as well inform. ed as those of Mr. Merrick—and perhaps ‘more 10”—s@ exerted themselves so as to secure their favorite’s nomi- nation and ultimate election; and I wish them joy of all that they have gained by the operation. Mr. was then nominated for the State Senate by the Worcester county coalitionists. In the Webster trial, which took place while he was in the Senate, Mr Merrick was senior counsel for the defence, and did his full part towards hanging his unhappy client. He has not the nerve to fight such a case as that was. It was then the opinion of our lawyers that Dr Webster would have stood a better chance for his life had the case been entirely entrusted te Mr. Sohier, his junior counsel. Governor Clifford, then Ate torney General, won great fame by his answer to Mr. Mer- rick, whose argument he riitied theough and than js because it was so exceedingly answerable. A lead: whig told me, this morning, that he had no doubt that the Governor appointed Mr. Merrick to the Judgeship out of gratitude to his conduct on that occasfon. Mr. Mer- rick has twice been a Justice of the Common Pleas Court, from which he has just been promoted. He has, I have heard it said, occasionsaliy evinoed a disposition te tyrannise as Judge. He hates Mr. Hallett, and once ihowed this iecling.om the ictal o€ sone, liquor. cn at Lowell, years 380, carrying things with a very hand indeed, to the’ great satisfaction of the whigs. Being neither a whig nor a democrat, strictly speaking, Mr. Merrick’s appointment will not prove popular in any quarter. It has already caused much anger anaes whigs, particularly those of the western part of the State, who have seen the Senatorship refused them, and both va- cancies on the Supreme Bench that have oceurred under Governor Ciifford’s administration filled up by the sp- pointment of Worcester lawyers, and.both. too, from the city of Worcester, city and county being alike the atrong- holds of coalitioniem, where freesoilism was bora, and where it is ever at ‘pineapple heat.” ‘The Springfield Republican, the ablest of our whig journals, and having more ability than the whole whig press of Boston com- bined, has indulged in the most cutting sarcasms on subject. Other whig Lo eos have spoken with more gravity, but evidently with no less feeling at heart. Some are silent, often the most significant way of conveyi rebuke. The coalition papers are mostly silent or com- demnatory. The circumstances of Mr. George Sumner’s offer of the Under-Secretaryship of State having never beon fairly published, perhaps, as I have them fromas sure a hand asold Ailsie Gourlay had the fate of the master of Ravenswood, you may not object to my account. Both the President and the Secretary of State, neither of whom. has any particular claim to familiarity ‘with foreign af- fairs, came to the conclusion that Mr. George Sumner ihe best man in the country for the place, but feared the Senate might object to ie appointment. Mr. Sec- retary Marcy had an interview with itr. Charles Suminec on the subject, with particular refererce to the chances of confirmation The Senator conversed with Mr. Soule about it, and that gentleman declared that the confirma- tion would be given as a matter of course. Se said Mr. Bright, also. But it appeara that doubts had im the meantime arisen in the Presidential mind respecting Mr. George Sumner’s orthodoxy on the Baltimore platiorm, which it was necessary to clear up. Meeting Mr, Charles Sumner just after this, Mr. Maroy inquired whether hia brother stood on the platform aforesaid. Mr. C. Sumner replied that he did not know, but that, for himself, he did not see how any two rational men could look each othee in the face, when talking on the subject, without laughing. At which adaptation of Cicero’s idea to modern stances the Secretary was graciously plewsed to smile “pretty extensively.” Perhaps his tongue vent rather deeply into his cheek; but he said it was necessary for the President to be informed on this point. The Senator then sent a despatch to his brother, and then, that failing, another, which brought him to Washington. bad an interview with the Secretary of State, who offered him the place on condition that he should give in his formal adhesion to the Baltimore platform, ag the President thought was necessary from a gentleman whose brother wais so distinguished a free soiler. Mr. G. Sumner replied that he bad neither cht nor expected ‘office, but that, whatever were his political opinions, he never would do anything that should have the effoct of placing him in an attitude of even seeming antagonism to his brother. Subsequently, he declined the sppoint- i thi ment by letter, and without reference to the conditions on which it had been offered. It is due to the Secretary of State to say that the conditions were not of his im- posing, and that he would willingly have conferred the Sppointment without so much as mentioning them, and to Mr. G Sumner to state that he isa democrat who does not want office. * Mr. Hawthorne will not loave for Liver] until about the 1st of July, on his way to fortune. agrees with the Roman satirist : ““Haud facile emergunt, quorum virtutibus obstat Res angusta domi,””-— ‘which, being interpreted, signifies that itis infernally rd for virtue to get to the top of the, tree, ten I as virtue’s pockets are destitute of tin,) and, therefore, ‘takes the back track’ to‘ the star of empire,” and goes to the Fast—the direction whence the wise man came—in search of competency; but then they were not after the riches of this world. Mr. Peaslee entered upon the discharge of his duties yesterday, and had quite a number of callers, some seventy in all, not one of whom got a glimpse of him, though he expressed a willingness to seo them in the af- ternoon, which ix certainly aa igh ‘on “to. morrow.”? Report says that he will not move vory rapidly in making changes. Col. Greene also assumed his place yesterday, on which occasion the following “skit”? was in circulation, said to have been written b; democrat on being asked what he thought of the Colenel’s a} pointment :— On A Late NAVAL APPOINTMENT. A post for Post—let the world understand, Of political clanship the profit and beauties; For Greene having spent all his life apon land, Will be (who can doubt ?) ‘all at sea” in his duties. We have no knowledge about the disposition that is to be made of our post office, but any quantity of ru- . mors. One of them is that Mr. Gordon will be allowed to serve out the term for which he was appointed. Mr. Francis A. Durivage, who has been for some years an inspector of the customs, has been Sppoiated to the post of his private secretary, by Collector Peaslee. It is a most excellent appointment ; and should the Collector be ax fortunace in his future selections he will bea most popular officer. Literary men are at a premium under the new order of things. ‘The New York berger) excite a good deal of talk. The free soilers, and some democrats, express the hope that Gen. Dix will not take any office, and especially no uch one as has been offered him by the President. They say they shall want him for aclean candidate for the Presidency in 1866, when, they think, there will bes ae opportunity to play over 1848 on a comprehensive reale. Mr. Jamieson’s appointment to the place of Naval Storekeeper will be popular. It was suppoved he would have something better. He was turned out of the Deputy Surveyorship by Fletcher Webster. Singular, Romantic, and Villanous Affaip— Proposed Or- ganization of the Police/ A most singular and rather romantle affair, has just come to light in this city, Some mogths since a wealthy young man came to this city from New York, and entered into partnership with a shipper, for the goneral transac- tion of the ship brokerage business. He soon became acquainted with a highly estimable young Indy, in Now- Duryport; and the acquaintance resulted in an engage- ment, The young Iady had a sister who was also engaged ton young trader, and arrangements wore made for hav- ing the two weddings wont od on the same evening. the¥ime appointed, and the minister engaged. The day before the bridal festival, however, intima- tions reached the ears of the father of the brides, that the Borton shipper was not all that could be desired.
