The paletots, ‘ura, and warm garments have been laidaside, and if the ‘nd of March and the month of April are not'as stormy usual, we shall soon see the leaves on the trees and line rosebuds in our gardens. In the meantime, the. river Seine is still covering the ws belew and above Paris, and overflowing its yanks from its source to the sea. The ‘‘water metre’? srhich is placed at the Pont Royal marks 5 metres 25 cen- limetres, and this is considered quite high for the river. Phis flood is attributed to the melting of the snow in ‘he mountains where the river has its source. From all parts of the mountainous countries of France in the Alpa, Pyrenees, Jura, &c.—we receive the news yhat the snow storms have produced a great number of tera. Several avalanches have buried many villa- .zew and their inhabitants in the grave, and these natu- cal accidents are not on the eve of being at an end, for the winter storms are still continuing in these parts of France. ’ Here we have had an avant courrier of tho spring eason in the exhibition of flowers which took place bn Friday last, in the square of the Champs Elysée junder an immense tent, in the centre of which was placed the pretty fountain which is built on the spot, The offerings of Flora, which were exhibited on the occasiom, were of the most magnificent order, and ail the amateurs of horticulture were highly delightod \with this grand display of flowers of all kinds, Lilacs, Jorchis, rodedendrums, dahlias, camelias, roses, fruits, | and preserves, which were disposed in a very picturesque style to the eyes of all beholders. A distribution of pre ymtums awarded to the gardeners who had exhibited the tlowers, took place on Monday last; amd thus ended the exhibition of these fragrant flowers, which were, on the grext day, either sold or taken away by their proprietors, |The Emperor and Empress, not to forget all the members ‘of the imperial family, visited the exhibition on Saturday last. The horse chestnut tree of the Tuileries garden, which is called L’arbredu 20 mars, in memory of the first appear- Jance of its leaves on the return of the Emperor Napoleon from the island of Elba, ia now in full bloom—e little in advance, as it may be seen, from its former epoch of rowth.' Many people were yesterday afterzoon aroun fhe tree, admi ite peg leaves. ‘The workmen engaged by the city of Paris have already been distributed in is de Boulogne, and have begun ¢ digging in all directions. A ditch, seventy-five metres and twenty metres deep, is to be made in the forest, { Fa kiceiees an artificial river, which will run across the I Bois de Boulogne, and in the centre of which will be two fslands, upon which villas will be built, and which will be ‘Joom with the shores by elegant brid | of this river will cost 1,400,000 franca. the Jockey Club have preferred a request to the Prefect of la Seine, to havea hippodrome made for the spring races, in the central part of the wood. ‘The approach of the Holy Week and of the end of Lent has somewhat. stopped the fashionable pleasures in the high sosiety of Paris, and the balls and soirees have been postponed until after Easter Sunday. At the Tuile- | ries, the only pleasure taken by the Imperial couple has ¢onsisted ina concert, which was given on Friday last, "and at which only one hundred friends had been invited, lls. Morlan and Lefebre of the Comic Opera house had been called to sing the prettiest gems of their repertoire, and they Were highly successful. The Emperor and the Empress presented these fair nightingales with two splendid jewels. There was also a re eeption last night, but the “company amounted to only 800 people. M. Fould and M. De Maupas have also given'two soirees, which were mere of litical than the fashionable Kind. ‘At the last sotree of the Minister of Police I met the celebrated African nabob, who is now the lion of Paris. Ben Ayet, a renegade, who is now the general-in- chief of the armies of the Bey of Tanis, is a young man, born in the neighborhood of Foulon, who, having been taken to Africa. has, by a serion of adventures of the Thousand and One Nights kind, been placed in the high ition which he now occupies at the Ben Ayet is worth thirty-nine millions of cas and, wishing to place his fortune in a standing interest, far from any of the difficulties which he could, by chance, encounter in Tunis, has bought the Passsge du Sau- mon, the Maison d'Or, and four large hotels in dif- fay parts of Paris, where he now intends to com? ear to apend a part of the fashionable _sea- ‘con its ecsebe splendid, and attract dail gone attention in’ the "Champs Elysées, Bois d wherever he goes. Ben Ayet has a harem, eS and there are seventeen pretty women, of al trios, who are under his Frotaction—and, nevertho- less, horrecco referrens! the Parisian belles are flirting with him like coquettes. What for? Tho great talk of the moment is the ball which will bo given at the house of the legislative corps, on the 28th | inst. The Deputies have made up their mind to eclipse aed splendor of, the ball given at the Senate, and I dare it they will reach their aim. The sum of 170,000 francs will be spent for that féte, for whieh the number of invitations is only limited "to 2,600. It appears that Louis Napoleon considered the féle of the Senate as too mauch cohue, and bas expressed his wishes to have more room at the house. This, no doubt. will be arranged ac. cording to his desires, and thus the number of the guests a Lal ‘smaller. ir, the Prefect of the Seine, will also give a ball to the Kmperor Napoleon and Empress Euge- Bi the 2a est oth Sie ata Orfila, the renowned chemist, is dead, is deat! has caused much mourning at the Academy of Medicine of Paris. The obsequies of this talentéd professor were celebrated at the church of St. Sulpice, which, though ve large, not sufficient space to receive the ad- miters of the incomparable savant. A musical mass was | sung by the Philharmonic Society in honor of the deceased, who had always been # great amateur of musio, an _ after the the rehole ase assembly followed the hoarse to the cemetery of Pere tne Chaise. Several speeches were delivered over the gra’ ie peonereae the Eippodrene has obtained from . ‘the Prefe real bull fights, in the Spanish style—that is to say, with ee Spadas, Torreadors, Picadores, and other members of profession, It is understood that no blood will be ill be killed with prussic acid, in such a manner as to be protected from thi orns” of the animals. Several jewels and other things were found in the coffins which contained these remains of a past century, ‘The house itself had been built under the reign of King Da “Bie ruicide of Count Camerata, which I mentioned in my last letter, was followed, a few days ago, by that of Mademoiselle Marthe, an actress of the Vauleville then- | tre, who hus been for some time enamored with the cousin | of the Bonapartes. The poor woman was so much frightened with these threats that she returned home, after having visited the church of the Madelaine, where the corpse had been exhibited, and accomplished her suieide with chareoal. The body was accompanied to the eemetery by all the comedians and actresses of Paris. pall bearérs were Mms. Cleo, Bader, Octave, and Du- prés, Por the Vaudeville theatre, A reporter of the As semble Nationale, who bad been lately the best friend of Mme. Marthe, was following the hearwe sheding tears, ‘A crime has been lately committed which caused much sensation in Paris. It appears that Mme. Fréni, a violin «player of much talent, born and edueated at Lille, who ad made an engagement with some artiste to visit the United States, came here a few weeks ago to make her passage arrangements for America. The unfortunate girl, who was a beautiful creature, was given up by her gents to. libidinous individual, who abused her whilst owas in ia state of invensibility by chloroform. On the following morning she was tak under a falre name, and died in the evening. The mo ther of this unfortunate young female, who had si picion of her terrible fate, made inquiries of the police, End the whole was discovered a few days ago. The peo ple concerned in this horrible transaction have all been arrested. A company of 125 Germans embarked, on Tuesday lant, at Havre for New York, Their intention is to go to California. We have now a convent of monks in Paris. These disciples of St. Francol: are thirty-two in number, and they have opened a chureh to the inhabitants of the Mont Parvasse, where their convent is situated. The following missionaries of the Roman Catholic religion embarked at Havre for Toronto, on Satur- day lant:—Meases. Souverifl, Malbos, Vincent and Flanirle, This Inst gontleman is of Irish birth. I have great pleasure in mentioning here a new book which T have received for Mr. Bennett, called Scdnes Americanes written and published by Mr. Charles Oliife, in Rglish gentleman of niuch talent, who on the reverse ountrymen, has written a book containing exact, to the hospital in the United States and Mexico. J have perused this hook with much attention, and I am sure it will make a great sensation in the United States. Mr. Charles Oliffe fias seen and observed much, and the second edition of his valuable book, which I have, is sold with much profit in Paris and ali over France, We have had many interesting new plays at the dif. ferent theatres in Paris, which are worth being made known to your American readers. ‘The most important and at ng sere them is the comedy called “T’honneur et I * written by of, the colebrated tragic author of ‘ Lucrece’’ of Police the permissicn of exhibiting in Paris | id sound remarks on a journey of eighteen months | Pow “Charlotte Corday,” which was played on Saturday last, &t the Odeon. The stock market opened to day weak and unsettled, with slight indications of a greater decline. At the first board, Florence and Keyport fell off { per cent; Cumber- land, 34; Reading Railroad, 1{; Panama Railroad, 1, Morris Canal advanced per cent; Canton Co., 58; New Creek, 34; Hudson Railroad, 13. In others there was no change. We notice more activity in railroad bonds and city bank stocks. Erie and Hudson River Railroad bonds comprise the principal business im that class of securities. The market is by no means strong, and the upward move: ment recently realized far from healthy one, The fact is, that out of Wall street there is no speculation; and the brokers cannot be buyers and sellers all the time, and make money. They cannot get up prices without extra- ordinary aid from outsiders, and there is at present very little probability of such aid being granted. When the brokers wish to break down the market, they can get along very well without amy external influence. The fancy stocks are all held in the street. The weaker classes of brokers are filled up with all kinds of trash, and they are particularly anxious to get rid of it without lous. The coal stocks weigh heavy upon holders, and the prospect looks black enough. ‘Thus far, vory little coal stock has been distributed. It is mostly hypothecated in large blocks, on account of the original holders, and there it is likely to remain, The few outsiders who touched Cumberland and Phenix got their fingers badly burned, and the probability is they will not touch them again. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port today amounted to $192,776; payments, $149,204 37; balance $6,896,902 23. The coal trade over the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, for the week ending the 16th inst., was greater by 313 tons, than thatof the last week, (which showed an increasy of 642 over any previous period,) and would have been still greater but for an unavoidable accident on the Mt. Savage Railroad—47 boats having been loaded with 4,707 tons coal, 120 coke, The canal continues in fine naviga- ble order, and boats are almost hourly arriving and de. parting. During the week ending the 16th, there were transported over the Mt. Savage Railroad 5,084 tons of coal, and over the road of the Cumberland Coal and Iron Company, 4,670 tons—total transportation for the week, 9,754 tons—and since the 1st of January last, 102,620 tons; of which 71,609 tons were transported over the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and 81,110 descended the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. This shows a slight decrease in the transportation over the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, as compared with the previous week. The Baltimore Sun of the 22d says—It is stated that the miners and laborers in the Cumberland (Md.) coal region have struck for higher wages, and that, in conse- quence, the coal business has been entirely arrested, and must so remain until the dificulty is adjusted. Copper ore, says the Raleigh, N. C., Register, has been recently found on the lands of Messrs. Atwater, between four and five miles southwest of the University. It is the double sulphuret of iron and copper, the ore from which nearly all the copper of commeree is extracted, and the same that is raised at the Fentress mine in Guil ford—quantity unknown. Speculators were generating steam a little too fast, and it is well they opened the safety valve in time, The citizens of Milwaukee are agitating the question of a harbor loan to add to the $15,000 appropriated by the government, and put the piers at the harbor in thorough repair. A vote will be taken upon it in the course of two weeks. A correspondent of the same paper writes as follows:—w “The very richest copper mine yet discovered in North Carolina, was found upon the lands of Jonathan Stalker, in the upper part of Randolph county, within one mile and a half of the plank road, and near a place ealled New Market. ‘This mloe was worked for gold twenty years ago, and abandoned on account of the copper ore inter- fering with the operations for gold | Then noone in North Carolina knew of the immense value of copper, and no notice was taken of it. The vein lies between a granite formation, and the copper is found embedded in the quartz, from four to five feet from the surface. Huge masses of quartz are dug out from this pit, and when the sledgo mer is applied to them, they burst open and expose ties per in seams, often entirely across the white quartz, I brought some of the specimens home with me, and they are pronounced superb.” Stock Exchange. 88 116 26 shs © yo CCo, 63 . 25 $6000 ee 6's, 762, 2000 NY St 534 1000 Kentucky 5000 Ind State 5's... 2000 Erie Ist Mt Bds 4000 Erie R 2d M Bds 2000 Hud 2d Mtg Bai 30000 Hud RN 6000 do. 5000 Mix & 45 she Manhat BE. 50 City Bank 10 Harlem RR eet. 110 5 Roch & Syr RR. 200 Phenix M Co, 85 Del & Hudson Ci 24 Bank Commerce, 96 Bank N America, 20 Hanover Bank... . € pe Exch Bank, rstal Palace... 260 N jersey Zine, ‘6 86 Net Insur 5 Home Ins G 400 Canton Co. 200 Long Island R, 43 30 200 do. 100 do......86m 50 do. 200 Cary Impt Go... 100 Stonington RR. $6 75'a $7. third, $5 50 a $675.
