FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Monvay, Jan. 17-4 P.M. ‘Tho market opened firm and active this morning, Purchasers on time, buyer's option, composed the bulk of operators. At the first board to-day, Morris Canal advanced } per cent, Cary Luprovemeat Com- pany 4, Long Island j, Phoenix Coal Company 2, Perker Vein 3, Pennsylvania Coal Company 2, Sto” nington j, Cumberland 4. Canton Company de. clined # per cent. At the second board, Pennsylva- nia Coal went up 4 per cent, Long Island 1}. Nica- agua feil off § per cent; Erie Railroad 4, Stonington 4, Sixth Avenue Railroad $. The bears in Phoenix Coai Company have made two or three attempts to break down that stock, by offering, at seller six and tweive months, small lots at prices five and ten per | ceat below those ruling for cash. This is frequently | resorted to during a rising market, but it is too trans. parent to deceive holders. It will be seen by the table of sales to-day, that all the coal stocks are in the ascendancy. There was an active demand for | each, and at the close they were firm at our quota’ tions. We notice sales of St. Lawrence Mining Com- pany at an advance of 14 per cent on previous trans- | actions. Since the recent clection of a new board of | trustees, there has been a growing demand for this | s stock, and many who sold at low prices during the mismanagement of the old board, are anxious to get | in aguin. The new trustees are progressing thoroughly in their investigations, and will be able in a few days to present to the stockholders some Siad of a state- ment. ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treas- orer of this port, to-day, amounted to $99,471 78; payments, $30,180 38—balanse—balance, $2,831,- O18 72. ‘Vhe decline in rates for sterling exchange will | prevent any further shipment of specie for the present. Thus far demand for exchange for re- | 1 mittance by the steamer on Wednesday, has been | limited, and drawers have let quotations down con- | siderably. We now qnote bills on London at 9a 4 | per cent premium; on Paris at 5f. 15 a 5f. 139; Am- sterdam, 41a 41}; Bremen, 79$480; Hamburg, | 264 & 369. Arrangements have been made to place the Mer- | chanta'fand Mechanics’ Bank of Oswego on a solid | footing, by placing more securities in the Bank De- partment. Its notes are quoted at one per cent dis- count; and it is expected that in a few days they will | be quoted at the same rate as other State money. | it ia also probable that the Farmers’ Bank of | Onondaga will take the Kame course. The Rome and Waterloo Railroad Company have declared a semi-annual dividend of five per cent; the Cleveland and Xenia Railroad, five per cent; the Galena and Chicago Railroad, first and second divi- sions, eight per cent. | ‘The importations into this port to-day—daa. 17— fhuve been as follows :— Coat—200 tons. Dry Good—1,881 packages, per steamer Arabia; 601 do., per ship Ainerica. Drugs—t casks ash, 12 cases opium. Iron—88 bars railroad iron, bars, 2,369 bundles hoop, 100 tons pig, 764 plates. Leat: | —14 caaka skivers, 6 packayes leather. Salt—50 sacks. Steel—87 bundles, 30 cases. Feed—180bags. Tia—2,633 boxes tin plates. Wool—20 beles woollen waste. | he Philadelphia Gazette gives the following ex- | } in the office of planation of the reported defale: the Reading Railroad Company :— For several days past rumors have been in cireu- | lation to the effect that an officer im the service of | the Reading Raiiroad Company bad proved a de- | faulter to a very large amount, and in some cases | the department in which he was alleged to be en- gaged has been particularly stated. These rumors are entirely without foundation. it is true that an | individual who had been employed as an agent in | the management of some real estate in which the | company had a partial interest, growing out of a | claim for debt, embezzled a portion of the funds _ which through lis hands; but the amount has been greatly exaggerated, and i ds expected that | a large | etahe of it will be refunded. e have au- *thority for saying that all the geutlemen who occupy situations connected with the company, both in the parent and auxiliary offices, enjoy, as they have merited, the confidence of their employers, and that any imputations on their integrity are alike unde- served and cruc}. ‘The annexed statement exhibits the qnantity and valne of certain articles exported from this port dur- ing the week ending and including Saturday, Jan. 15, distinguishing the de-tination and extent of ship- meats to each place :-— Cownercs oF tir Fort or New Yors.—Warxir Exports LaNDox Quen’, Fay Quant Value.
