Journey from Toronto to the Springs—Lake Ontario Scenery —The Sabbath on the Saint Lawrence—The Lechine Rapids at Midnight—Desolation of Montreal, as Viewed from the | Twrvet of the Church of Notre Dame, $c. A pleasant journey ot three days, with one devoted to rest and sight seeing, has brought me from Toronto, the | metropolis of Western Canada, to this world renowned | watering place, The time has glided past delightfully | and net unprofitably, for travel always brings this if no other benefit; that we learn from our experience abroad, | to love our own country and home the more, Saturday brought us down along the Canadian shore of Lake On- tario, showing us many prosperous towns and settle- | sments—Coburg, Cape Hope, and others, handsomely lo- cated, and haying the appearance ot being thriving marts of commerce and growing mto importance. Our society on board was quiet ano highly agreeable. We had haifa dozen parties of Yankeos who bad beeu to the Falls, and were making a circuit by Kingston Montreal. the Whi Mountains, and Saratoga ; aud a few English tour sts, who had seen all the sights usually comprehended in a summer month’s travel here. and who were now proceed ing to Boston on their recurn, A military engineer belonging to the Lrivish amy, and who seemed, from the constant use of b y ged in re- | cording what struck his ob-ervation along the route, | and on overgrown ofiicer-bey, were the only official | repreventatives we bad of the colonial government: and the e worthies, with the true ari tocratic smack of the | home country. kept aloof trom their fellow travellers, whom they set down pe: haps #s mere plebeians. I con- trived to get the martial booby into a couversation, and was amused at bis asertions that no part of the United | Stateshad made ro great progress, for the last fifty years, | as Western Canada bad. ln fact be looked upon British North America as belf a ceutury in advance of the States | in greatness and prosperity “I gave up this scion of | upper-tendom as @ hopelers euse. und did not seck any | more to interrupt his rolitude or remove the ridiculous | impression which he. in common perhaps with the majority of his fellows, cnicrtained Five o'clock, en Sunday morning brovght ux invo port, at Kings- ton, where we transshipyce on Loard the mail steamer to Montreal, We had uot time to go ashore to look at the sights of ibis ca avd had to be | Satisfied with what we saw the deck of our | boat. The most prominent object which here strikes the eye is an immenee massi ¢ structure, with wings snd cupola, which might be mistaken for a fortress, or at all events a military barrack. On inquiry. however, I learned that the gloomy ooking editce Was nothing more than a market. erected by the government at an immense expense, I afervards rewacked that Montreal peasessed @ similar buildiug. devoted to the like Pur- pose ; and I could not but, admire the sagacity and fore- saght dleplayea by the government in erecting structures suitable to cities of ten times their magnitude, ina eountty which, long before they can be useful or requi- site, will have made its eonge to old Bull, and commenced business on its own hook. Notwithstanding the earnest and unceasing efforts of those Puritanic, pious people. who are ao much more holy than their neighbors that they regard Sunday traveling as one of the most heinous ofences, here we are this glorious Sabbath mo: descending the Ste Lawrence. Every heart feels inspiration from the scones through which we glide so rupidiy. and so constantly varying that it might seem as i: we were but spectators in a phantasmagoria. We need no reverend man to-day, to impress us with a senre of the power snd! majesty of the great architect of the universe. His works around us speak to the heart in characters more eloquent than tongue ofmancan utter; ana here we feel that we need no minister or guide other than the man at the wheel, who stoers our beat through those furious currents; no solemn toned organ, other than that engine. with’ its pipes and yalveg. which propels us on our course; and no sapetuary other than the blue vault of heaven, which overhangs us We teel, indeed. that “Hie temple is the face of day— Earth, ocean heaven, His boundless throne.” The morning ond afternoon is spent on deck, and the ey¢ becomes almost weary of admiring the beauty of the scenery. Now and again we pass rafts sailing down the river, of such extent that they look little colonies or vil- lages. On one I reckoned upwards of thirty huts, and there might have been some hundred human beings on that rude and primitive looking ark Now we are among the far-famed Thousend Isles of the Saint Lawrence, and every eye is quick in discerning now points of beauty a3 ‘the boat pursues her devious route among them; and every tongue is loud in expressions ot surprise and admiration. There, on our left, is Grand Ieland, stretching away for miles; and here are some 80 small and beautiful. that they look as if they were merely derigned for the narads to play “ hideand go seek” among. Now our boat with difficuity forces a passage between there clustering islets. and now rhe merges from among them end attains achinnel miles in width. And there, in front, are the rapids, foaming and chafing in imi- fon of the Atlamic’s waves; und on. right through them careers our boat, tossed and agitated trom’ side to side, ag if it were a mere plaything of the waters. On the Canadion bunk. psraliel with the river, is visible the canal through which the boats returm as no vessel can make its way against that resistiess ourrent. And this is the character of the St Lawrence throughout ite whole course, frm Kingston to Montreal. We | clines being the free sil candidate for the Presidency. The Fisheries. Trernisie Tracrpy —We have been furnished, by a genileman from the scene of the horrible tragedy with the particulars of the murder which took place at Trox'en, Cortland County, on Tuesay. Some of the circumstances look to us improbable. but our infoumant assures us they are true totheletter. The murderer isan Irishman. Patrick Donoghue by name. ‘The victims were th fe and child of Daniel Kianey, who resides near the Fash factory, just south of the vilinge of Trux- ton. .A daughter pf Doaoghue’s had been missing for several days, and he pretended to believe that Mrs, Ki ney had stolen the child. On Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. K, and her davghter pasved Donoghue in the street. near his residence, and remarked to him that she did not be- lieve he would cver see his girl again. Upon this, D. went into his house, and immediately came out with o shot gun in his hand, and-accompanted by his wife, who had a rifle, He followed afer Mrs. K., and coming up with her, struck her a blow with the butt of his gun on the back of the head, which felled her to the ground, and as she fell, he struck her another blow, which broke her neck. Mrs. K.’s daugh- ter ran with all her speed from the murderer, when he snatched the rifle from his wife aud shot the girl dead, D. then reloaded his rifle, and went to the sash fuctory, raying that there were two men there whom he would shoot’ He finally went toatavern im the village, and there repeated that there were two persons in the saeh factory whom he would kill. He was laughed at, and told that he dared not doit. He told the persons present to go down the road, and they would see what he dared do. A man then arrived feom the secne of murder. and after a brief struggle, D. was secured, and conveyed to the Cortland county jail. Upon the discovery of the murder of Mrs, Kinney and daughter, suspicion was aroused that Donoghue was also the murderer of his own daughter. Some of the citizens repaired to his residence, where they found his boy, and questioned him regarding the whereabouts of his ister, He said he dared not tell what he knew, for fear hie father would kill him, They told him that his father was in pricon. and could not injure him; upon Es Freicuts.—Rates to Liverpool continued dull. and en- were engaged at 0d; ments light. 1,000 bbls. flour chartered to load with naval stores for Newcastle, Kug- land at 28.
