Wasmixoron, July 9,1852, Enclosed I hand you a list of awards, made by the Commissioner, June 30th, to the claimants under the Treaty with Brazil, of 27th January, 1849. They are for publication in the Henaxp, and are authentic. Awanps made by the Commissioner, June 30, 1852, un- der the Act of Congress of 29th March. 1850, to carry int» States and effect the Convention between the United Brazik of January 27th, 1849 :— Brig Toucan....... Tt is generally understood that Mr, Crampton, the Bri? tish Minister here, is about to pay Mr. Webster a visit, with the view of enjoying the hospitalities of Marshfield; but I can further state, upon reliable information, that Mr. Webster contemplates proceeding, next month, to St. Jobn, New Brunswick, and will continue his tour through that province by the line of the proposed rail- road from Portiand to Halifax, which runs through the beautiful valley of Sussex Vale to Shediac on the Gulf of St. Lawrence; and further, that measures are in pro- gress for placing at his disposal her British Ma- jesty’s steam frigate Devastation, which, I stated in my last, had been ordered to Prince Edward Island, for the protection of the fisheries in that quarter; in which veaeal he will have an opportunity of cruising for a short time for the benefit of bis health, and which yeesel will carry him to Quebec should he wish it, in which case he will probably return to the United States through It will thus be seen that while the British government are taking active steps to ensure the observance of the provision of the treaty with reference to the fisheries, there is no hostile feeling towards this country; and I Lo, upon | it. that the presence of the American Secretary the North, at tbis critical juncture. canrfot but ba attended with advantage to the interests of the United Btates; and I believe the information of the tn- teation to plact the Devastation at his disposal, wil Ifirst reach that gentieman through the columns of the Heracp, as be is at presept at Marshfield Our “Boston Correspondence, Bosrox, July 10, 1 The Webster Movement in Massachusetts—Its Rationale Its Effect upon the Prospects of Scott—The Relations of the Theee Parties of the State: Whigs, Democrats, and Free-Soilers—The Progress of the Anti-Slavery Sentiment fn the North. The leading friends of Webster Gid all they could to prevent that meeting, because they Geemed it premature. and they wanted to wait till after the reception, and also desired to gain time to perfect the Organization. It is said that they are now sorry they id not take the meeting on inst Wednesday into their bands, for it was an enthusiastic and a great mect- ing in evory respect, except the abeence of the leaders ofthe party. The principal actor on that occasion was Rev. Mr. Winslow, who is a wealthy gentleman, having martied a lady of fortune, and is now in the receipt of am immense income from @ lady's school. He was never known before to take any part in political movements- He deliverred very classical and beautiful address, but it was very evident he was not “up to trap. In that event, Pierce would be elected beyond all doubt. But the friends of Webster, and a large number of the constitutional whigs of Massachusetts, would prefer to see Pierce President to- morrow, rather than General Scott, who seems to be un- der the strange misfortune of being obnoxious both to the free soilers and the whige—to the free soilers because he swallowed the platform; to the whigs because they regard him as the nominee of Seward & Co., and believe that if elected, he will be under their control. Thus is the brave old General victimized by his friends. In the meantime the anti-slavery ey, will gather fresh strength from all this—every day it is gaining ground. The unprecedented fact, stated a day or two ago, by an evening paper here, that Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe has received for three months, as the authorship premium of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” $40,000, speaks volumes for the Progress of the abolition sentiment, especially when we take into account the circumstance that this profit, according to a recent statement of Lewis Tappan, is only at the rate of fifteen conts per copy.
