A year or two since the Legislature of Ponneylvania passed a timilar bill, aud we believe the law has worked pretty well, The Western States will have fora time the benefit of this, as it will throw the smaller issnes of Kastera banks among them ; but if it is oarried too far, it will be- come as great an evil there as it has long been in other Places. The Pennsylvania Raliread Company offsially refute the eharges mado against them, that any jealousy ex- jeting between the merchants of Philalolphia and New York, isa matter of any interest to the management of theroad. It is true that the company gave notise to their agents in this city not to receive any goods to g> ‘weot over that road until further notice, for thejfollowing sound and substantial reasons :— Our road being in an unfinishe’ state, we must neces- sarily transport freight passing between this place aud Pittsburg—forty miles—by wagons, which, of course, limite our buriness in proportioa to the numbor of wegons we are able to procure ; ant to show that the agents of the company heave been active in their exer- tions at that point, we need only say that they have en- geged over Gwo hucdred wagons, employing more than one thousand ho: Even with this amount of stock, Cur receipts at Philadelphia wore likely to be more than could be forwarded. Our only resort, then, was to limit our daily receipts to an amount that could bs forwarded without detention. To receive freight without check, at this time, from New York, would bave been ruinous to the owners of goods, as well asiojurious to the rep ticn of this company. We then—as the ouly method posible to adopt--on the lth of February, telegraphed to the agents of all the New York lives, to rend us no more freizht. We wrote all of said parties, on the 11th, to the same effect, informing them, at the same time, that ai] the old lines were receiving freight, which is the only winter channel goods New York or Philadelphia have ever had; their faciltiles are the same they ever beve been, and our daily shipments of one hundred tons pared amount to inorease of business of the present ‘winter. Between the 11th and 16th of F-bruary, we did not re prekage of goods from any of the Philadelohia from thot date to the present, have limite pts toap amount webad wagons to accommo- date, without detaining the goods beyond the time re- eripted for.
