THE SPHHCH OF KOSSUTH | To THE CLERGY OF PITTSBURG. Prrrsavac, January 27, 1852, Having beon addressed by Rev. Dr. MeGill, Kossvrn said :—Revenesy Six—I receive with thank- fol beart, and with pious reverence, the weloome of the evangelical ministry of Pittsburg, Allegheny, and vici- Dity=ministers of the Gospel, of the word of God, as it a revealed to the right of private judgment in that sacred | volume, of divine orizia, which you truly called “ the great work of tchooling humanity.” Ministers of the Goepel, your bearts and your minds are too deeply per- waded by the duties of your holy mission, to permit your sympathies and affections not to be always regulated by those principles of everlasting truth revealed by God Bimeelf in the book of light,to the rightful under- of whish you have devoted your lives. Thus, im receiving, with Lumble heart, your approbstion aud your welcome, I feel as it | had received the approbation Of religion. Whenever [ listen to you, Iam sure to hear from you the word of the Lord; therefere, I feel on this Bolemn occasion, aud on thie holy ground ss ifan angel's voice was felling me from above—* The cause thou pleadest bart found meroy before Him wao rules heaven and earth, Thou mayst meet with malignity and @rror—thou mayest meet hostility and craft—thou mayst meet calumny and ambitious envy, sufferings, and the death of martyrdom; but never mind that—the cause thou pleadest will triumph So go on, and trust in Him who gave strength tothe boy David against Goliath.’ And I prostrate myrelf before Him, and apy, in the obe- ienoe of my humble heart:—Lord, Thy will be done! Reverend gentlemen, Iam no week man Adversities of life have rirengthened my nerves, and religion has strength- ened my heart, I jook up to whatever storm gathers above me, not like the flower which bends beneath every Durning ray or before every breeze, I am not easily moved; but the consolation of religion always makes & deop impression upon wy beart; sud Lam not ashamed to confers thar tender tears come to my eyes whea Shear a minister of the Goepel, in this his capacity, ublicly raising hie prayer to (od, that he may jere MY cause, and see 4 Whole congregation of true be- lievers piously joining in that preyer; and such truth, with such warm conyistion, proclaimed in th» house of God, I had the high privilege, Inet Runday night, to ear and ace the caure of Hungary aided there, where no Other aid is ever gathered but foray aim just, benevo- Tent, and true. It fan only be achieved when the nations on earth be- come free from oppressicn, and independent in their Dational concerns, because it is only under the protec- tion of free institu in their turn asain impossible without pational ind snes—it ix only upon that ‘basis that individual a and personal security can be thus developed; ena ree word aud the free press, ‘and popular educ be thus employed, to afferd to individuals, « insured right, as also the required intelligence, to come, by private judgment, te that knowledge and to that conv ction ofthe true word which it is your happy privilege to preach and my con- Bolation to share. It is, therefore, not without motive that the ministers ot the gospel sympathize with freedom and national independence on earth. Oppression is al- ‘Ways accompanied, in the messes, either by superstition or by impious unbelief, Freedom inspires the heart with thankfulness to God, and developes the religious instinct, unconscious in itself, to # conscious be- lief. By freedom, religion becomes a conviction of the mind, warmed st the purest flame of the heart. Let me therefore eutreat you, reverend gentlemen, to go on by your decisive authority, and by the devoted ener- gy congenial to your holy mission, to support that cause which you honor and sanctify by your approbation, Be- lieve me. that In doing thus, you plan in the most effec- tive manner the way to the victory of that which you, Teverend sir, bave #0 truly termed the hope of all that is bright in the future of nations, as well a® blissfalin the immortslity of man Ifit be indeed true. as you said that religion can ve ver ccase to be republican, then what om the earth could promote the spreading triump4 of this Feligion more than to see the republic of the United Btates, ipfiuenced by the practical virine of christianity, raising the principl: of Christian brotherly love to hecome the basis of international laws? The movement was aided by the inhabitants; but the Papers express the hope that it will soon be put down, asthe Prefect of Atlixoo and the Governor of Puebla have taken the mest energetic measures, At Acayucan another riot happened between the National Guard and about two hundred of the inhabitants.
