The Two Operas. ‘Last evening, the two rival opers froupes performed— ‘one at Nidlo’s, with @ powerful cast, and the other at Astor Place, with » cast still more powerful, if possible— two megnificent sroupcs—end the performances, which were tragedies, both sdmirable; yet, strange to say, either house wae near full. At the first board to-day, Reading Railroad declined 44 percent; Cautom Company, \\; Brie Railroad, 1; Erie Convertible, ‘71, 4. There appears to be considerable anxiety en the part of holders of Reading to realize, but it ie dangerous to put much atoek om the market at once. At the second board more than three thousand shares of Erie Railroad stock were sold, and the closing prices show a decline of one and a quarter per cent from those current in the morning. The total decline in this stock to-day istwo per cent, Erie aud Reading Rallroad ap- pear to have lost caste with present holders. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Tressurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $141,008 48; payments, $44,439 48—Dalance, $1,948,973 77. There is no steamer from this port, for Liverpool, until Saturday next, when the Atlantic leaves. It is mot known yet how much specie she will take, The Cambria leaves Boston on Wednesday, for Liverpool. The mails elose to-morrow (Tuesday), It would bea good plan for the Postmaster to send the mail by the afternoon train over the New Haven route, asthe Sound steamers are very un- certain at this season. The New Jercey Railroad and Transportation Company have declared a semi annual dividend of 5 per cent. The Utica and Schenectady Railroad Company have declared a dividend of 6 per cent, payable on the stock registered here, at the Phenix Bank, in this city. The Superintendent of the Banking Department of this State has given notice thata dividend of ninety-one cents on the dollar, of the elroulating notes of the James Bank, and of eighty-one cents on the dollar on the notes of tho Bank of New Rochelle, will bo paid on their presentation at the Department. Certificates will be given for the uv- paid balance in each Instance, whish will entitle the holders to participate in any further divideud which may be meade, ‘The proceeds of the two milis tax in Iilinols. Jevied in accordance with a rpeeial clause of the new constitution of that State, were last year paid to eeveral slzewd flnan- clers of this elty, who availed themselves of the oppor- tunity to bare a portion of their claims liqaldated. The clause of the new constitu tion requizing the procceds of this tax to be appropriated to the liquidation of the principal of the internal {m- provement debt of the State will soon be changed, and the amount appropriated to the paying of the annual interest. There isa large portion of the interest on the debt of the State in arrears rince the last funding, and it is simply abeurd to pay apy portion of the principal, no lopg e¢@ any portion of the fal) aynual interest is ua- paid, The Ohio and Pennsyivania Railrord Company hare made a report to their steckholders, by which it appears that this railroad is now completed, andis {n running order from Pittsburg to Alliance, a length of $2 mile ‘The completicn of this road affords an unbroken cha’ of fret class roads with Cleveland, Columbus, and Cin nati, SF Way Of Pitteburg, The trains commenced ran- ning on the 6th inst, In the space of two years and « half,a first-class read connection has been established between the public works of Ohio and those of Penneyl- vania, The number of passengers carried, from the open- ing of the first pertion of the road to the close of the cz- lendar year, was 56,2(6. Until very recently, only twenty. eight miles of the road were in use, and the freight bus!- ness is inits infancy. The receipts from passengers have been $20,074 59, and from freight $2,202 63.--making $82,243 12. The expenses have been $14,258 82, and the net receipts $18,084 80. The daily receipte are now ra- pidly increasing. With the exception of twenty miles east of Pittsburg, the line to Philadelphia and New York is also complete. ‘The receipts of the Boston, Concord, ani Montreal Railread Company, for December, 1851, amounted to $13,701 94, egeinet $8,091 50 for the corresponding month in 1850, showing an increase of $5.220 44—equial to ebout sixty-five per cent. ‘The increase in savings banks, in this and other cities cf the Union, is the best evidence in the world of the prozperity of the industrial classes, and the exten- ion of the spirit of economy, which has ever been exhi- ed in this country.
