The Two Operas. ‘Last evening, the two rival opers froupes performed— ‘one at Nidlo’s, with @ powerful cast, and the other at Astor Place, with » cast still more powerful, if possible— two megnificent sroupcs—end the performances, which were tragedies, both sdmirable; yet, strange to say, either house wae near full. Niblo’s was not one-fifth fall; and Astor Place wae little more then half filled Both audiences together would mot make one good house. ‘Thin result mey be partly aceounted for by the num- Bers who were enjoying themselves sleighing, for not- withstanding the cold, perheps there never were more public avd private sleighs out, and all of them crowded. At Niblo’s, the tragic opera of “ Lucrezla Borgia” was performed. The part of Lucresia was acted and sung with great éclat by Rore De Vries, who made some oapital pointe; and Virginis Whiting was much admired as Or- imi, particularly in the drinking song. Badiali, ay the Dube, and Bettiui, ae Gennaro, added fresh laurels to their fume, All was excellent, but the house, AtAstor Place the house was better, but mot what might be expected on an Opening might, with so grand a tragedy (‘La Favorite,”) ond so fine a cast, Steffanone was" the favorite” in wvery.sense ofthe word She ex- @elled herself, and everybody seemed to feel that she never sang 60 betore in thet house. Bhe was in good veice, and the eliciour, tich melody of ber sympathetic tones was trulya feast. Her part was one continued triumph from beginning toend. In come pasenger abo was sublime--electrifying. Ip several of her songs she produced a perfect furore, with ehouts of “ Brayo;” the audience ‘ing their hate and hendkerchie‘s for several minutes, It was in the third ecene of the third act che was mout brilliant, Never did we bear it so sung by any other vocal Ta the lest Woenes of the tragedy she was gravd. In such lyric trage- dies as “La Favorita,” &:effanone stands alone, Salvi, whose voice is net what it war, did not do so well An the beginving; bat ae he proceeded he warmed up, and towards the close made some palpable hits, which were enthusiastically appisuded Tis acting waa very fine. He performed the part of fernando. Marini, as the King, and Benevantano,as Balthazar. both eusta'ned ‘their parts with great epirit andeifect The deep-toned ‘voice of Beacyentano peels’ like an organ. Ihe chorus wan very fine. Harely, if ever, has thiv, the best of al Donizetti's operas, been £0 well performed. “ Letter from Henry Clay—His Health. The following letter has been received from Hon. PRESS Se ER OR Ne RTE OT NEY MARKET. Moxpay, Jan. 19—6 P.M. The etoch market opened beavy this morving, bat there was Ko Preterial alteration in prices, exeept in one or two Instances. We ne’ considerable falling oT im transactions, and things look as though we should have a dull time in the street for sometime. It is utterly ismporsiile to get the rteam up without outside aid, At present this influence is limited, and there are no indi- entions of its increasing muchimmeliately, When stocks are in tho hands of outside capitalists, operators in Wall street aro usually dispored to bear the market, and by depreesing prices indace holders to spll out, The brokers then purchase at the reduction, and at the pro- per time rel the machinery in motion to get upania- Nation, Outelders are drawn in again at “higher pr fy tnd #0 tho wheels revolve. Speculators out of the streat abacst Lnvariably buy at high ond sell at low prices, and the probability is that it clwaye will be wo. They never ean be induced to take hold of fancy etooks at the lowest dip of the market, The lower prices go, the more worth. Jorn etochs are covsidered; ond the higher prices gs, the more anxious cutsiders are to purchase, At preeent the bulk of fancy stooks $s held in Wall street; and en epecuiators out of the sirost will not touch iuwem at Current raten, the brokers find they must got up 20 excitement, and Inflate prices emeng themaciver, before they ean bring in new purchasers, If capllaliste w old go into the pireet and buy vp large Jota of the mont depreciated stoeke, and keep then pat them away, oud well (he contse of pres’) 1 xO Without doubt, make Bopey, Aw igver\ment of trie | would pay better than any other employment of capital we can now think of. There is little om no risk im ‘it, and good returns are almost guarantied. We Soya idem that thie advice will be taken. The class speculators we allude to will wait until prices range pa to fifteen per cent above current rates, when they will rush im, and blindly, recklessly take nold of every stock in the Ust, good, bad and indifferent. At the first board to-day, Reading Railroad declined 44 percent; Cautom Company, \\; Brie Railroad, 1; Erie Convertible, ‘71, 4. There appears to be considerable anxiety en the part of holders of Reading to realize, but it ie dangerous to put much atoek om the market at once. At the second board more than three thousand shares of Erie Railroad stock were sold, and the closing prices show a decline of one and a quarter per cent from those current in the morning. The total decline in this stock to-day istwo per cent, Erie aud Reading Rallroad ap- pear to have lost caste with present holders. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Tressurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $141,008 48; payments, $44,439 48—Dalance, $1,948,973 77. There is no steamer from this port, for Liverpool, until Saturday next, when the Atlantic leaves. It is mot known yet how much specie she will take, The Cambria leaves Boston on Wednesday, for Liverpool. The mails elose to-morrow (Tuesday), It would bea good plan for the Postmaster to send the mail by the afternoon train over the New Haven route, asthe Sound steamers are very un- certain at this season. The New Jercey Railroad and Transportation Company have declared a semi annual dividend of 5 per cent. The Utica and Schenectady Railroad Company have declared a dividend of 6 per cent, payable on the stock registered here, at the Phenix Bank, in this city. The Superintendent of the Banking Department of this State has given notice thata dividend of ninety-one cents on the dollar, of the elroulating notes of the James Bank, and of eighty-one cents on the dollar on the notes of tho Bank of New Rochelle, will bo paid on their presentation at the Department. Certificates will be given for the uv- paid balance in each Instance, whish will entitle the holders to participate in any further divideud which may be meade, ‘The proceeds of the two milis tax in Iilinols. Jevied in accordance with a rpeeial clause of the new constitution of that State, were last year paid to eeveral slzewd flnan- clers of this elty, who availed themselves of the oppor- tunity to bare a portion of their claims liqaldated. This yeara larger amount was presented, and the per cent paid was, cf couree, lees, The amount of Stale indebtedpess presented at the Auditor's offlce for p vata dividend was £671,771; amount of two mills tax dis tributed, $227,102; per centage di uted, thirty-eight cents and eight mills. The clause of the new constitu tion requizing the procceds of this tax to be appropriated to the liquidation of the principal of the internal {m- provement debt of the State will soon be changed, and the amount appropriated to the paying of the annual interest. There isa large portion of the interest on the debt of the State in arrears rince the last funding, and it is simply abeurd to pay apy portion of the principal, no lopg e¢@ any portion of the fal) aynual interest is ua- paid, The Ohio and Pennsyivania Railrord Company hare made a report to their steckholders, by which it appears that this railroad is now completed, andis {n running order from Pittsburg to Alliance, a length of $2 mile ‘The completicn of this road affords an unbroken cha’ of fret class roads with Cleveland, Columbus, and Cin nati, SF Way Of Pitteburg, The trains commenced ran- ning on the 6th inst, In the space of two years and « half,a first-class read connection has been established between the public works of Ohio and those of Penneyl- vania, The number of passengers carried, from the open- ing of the first pertion of the road to the close of the cz- lendar year, was 56,2(6. Until very recently, only twenty. eight miles of the road were in use, and the freight bus!- ness is inits infancy. The receipts from passengers have been $20,074 59, and from freight $2,202 63.--making $82,243 12. The expenses have been $14,258 82, and the net receipts $18,084 80. The daily receipte are now ra- pidly increasing. With the exception of twenty miles east of Pittsburg, the line to Philadelphia and New York is also complete. ‘The receipts of the Boston, Concord, ani Montreal Railread Company, for December, 1851, amounted to $13,701 94, egeinet $8,091 50 for the corresponding month in 1850, showing an increase of $5.220 44—equial to ebout sixty-five per cent. ‘The increase in savings banks, in this and other cities cf the Union, is the best evidence in the world of the prozperity of the industrial classes, and the exten- ion of the spirit of economy, which has ever been exhi- ed in this country.
