Fire at Buffalo—T wo Lives Lost. Burr ato, Jan, 18, 1852, About two o'clock this morning, a fire broke out in the saloon kept by David Dix, in the basement of the building on the corner of Main and Eagle streets. The fire speedily communicated with the drug store of P. G, Vought & Co., in which a large quantity of combustible matter was kept, and spread with fearful rapidity to two adjoining buildings on Main street, and to the ad- joining awelling house on Eagle street, all of which were entixely consumed before the flames could be subdued. ‘The buildings on Main streoct were occupied, on the ground floor, by P. IMPORTATION OF COTTONS FROM AMERICA. PRIVILEGE OF STATING IX A PORT. Gextiemen=A considerable disproportion has existed for some time between the price of cotton in the city of Havre and in the market of Liverpool. In order to re store the equilibrium and facilitate our cotton importa- tions, several chambers of commerce have asked of my department to obtain permission that the American ships may henceforth, without losing the benefits of direct navigation, be authorized to ia¥nglish porta. ‘That requeet could notfailto attract the attention of tne government, for it not only interests our industry, but also our merchaut navy, which you know takes only a Vory restricted part in transporting theootton. Under that point of view, it was to be feared that new fastiities conceded to the American fag would result in reducing the proportioual part of thore of our ships which enter- tain relations with the American Unicn.
