The transactigns in Erie Railroad stock, to- day, were unusually large, and prices fell off one per from the opening. Norwich and Worcester declined 14 percent ; New Jersey Zinc, '; ; Reading Railroad, ';; Morris Canal, };; Erie Bonds, convertible, 1871, 1. Eckfeldt and Dubois, of the United States Mint:— ‘The fifty dollar pioce of the United States Assay Office at Ban Francirco, established at San Francisco by the Act of Congress, 1850, is prepared and iesued by Mesers, Moffatt & Co., contractors, and bears the stamp of Au- gustus Humbert. assayer. The two professed ates of ‘tines, 880 and 887 thowsandths, are found, upon assay here, to be duly maintained, whether in single pieces or aarti on But some irregularity in the weight ‘of s0 heavy # piese, alloyed with silver zaly, and ofler- ing eight corners to wear, is to be expected. When pre- in quantities sufficient to allow for parting the silver, say 70 ounces, the average mint value is about 96010. ‘In less quantities, the silver not being allowed for, the average value is about $49 00, but even without or they cocasionally come up fully to the alleged ‘The Titna Fire Insurance Company has declared a dividend of four per cent. The American Railway Times, of the Ist inst, contains a list of all the railways in the United Stater, by which it eppears that the number of railways in operation is 268, measuring 11,565 miles, and constructed at a cost of $335,150,848, The number of railways in course of con- struction is 74, measuring 11,228 miles, Tho total num- ber of railways is 337; and the whole number of miles in operation and in course of construction {*» 22,803. Their Weality. &c., may be seen from the following:— Rastroans ix Back or rar, Um ep Brares, Jan. 1852, No. of les in Dfiles in States operation, course of Cost, ways, including construc branches. Thie shows s groater Sength of reilroad than in sny other country in the world, and emounts to nearly one-half of the aggregate Sength of railway in existence, According to the mort recent ‘returns, the extent of railway, under trafis, snd the amount capital invested in them in tne several countries in which they hove beep corriructed, were av aupexed --- Hasncers in Boom Gourrny, Bikes completed. ond esr 1,635 935,160,848 1,250,000 000 390,875,000 283,905,000 47,820,000 15,000,000 Umied Star United Kingdom: Germanic States, . TO). ceeseeee ve 098,027 $2,240,810 848 Te will be seen by this statement, that mere then one- half of the aggregate cost was expended in the United Kingdom, upon a Little leas than one-third of the entire length. Beven thousand miles of road, in the United Kingdom, cost four times a9 much as eleven thoucand five hundred miles in the United States. It has been stated, in » Londom paper, that the people of (reat Hritain have within the past twenty years, not enly paid two hundred and fifty millions of pounds sterling, for tbe construction of their own railioads, but hare co about fifiy millions of pounds sterling te the co tlon of railways in other countries. It is estimated that the net profit from railways, in all countries, is about three and a half per cent on the cost of construction and e¢¢ qaipmens, The annexed table, showing the amount of capital expended Io e h country, in railways, for every one hundred Individuals of the entire population, will be interesting :— Sees on i noaps Fon Bacnt Wuxpneo or Porvrarion. + 1,200 Russia, +» $800 Btater, aud more than six times.as much as in France. The length cf road in proportion to the popula- tion in each country, is as follews:— Luxor o8 me pen Minnis oF Porviation. United States. ....... United Kingdom. Germanic States. Belgium ....045 —So that while the total length of railway in operationin the United Ssates exceeds the length open in the United Kingdom in the ratio of 103 to 70, the capital invested in the Englith railways exceeds that invested in the rail- ways of the United States, in the ratio of 125 (0 33, Cost rer Mie. ror Consri rock. United Kingdom. .$178,600 German’ . $02,000 France... + 20,000 Belgium... From the above, it appears that the average cost per mile of the British railways, ha been one third more than the French, nearly twice that of Belgium, three times that of the Germanic, and nearly six times that of the American. This is a most extraordinary statement. The small cost of railroads in the United States gives usan immense advantage over every other country, and in a fe the length of railway in this country will ex others put together. The construction of railroads in the Western and Southern sections of the Union costs less than in the Eastern and Middle States; and the average cost of roads, ten years hence, will be less than it isnow, We have such an immense extent of territory to corer with these works of internal improvements, that It is fortunate that their cost iscomparatively so small. The cost of our railroads isa mere bagatelle, compared with the advantages and benefits derived from them. The value of property has been quadrupled by the almost an- nibilation of distance between remote points, There has been an equalization ef value in landed property, a better distribution, and an abandonment of that concentration in value that existed previous to the construction ofthis rapid mode of communication. The aggregate has been unusually increased, while certain lecalities have depre- ciated. ‘The superintendent of the banking department, in bis report to the Legislature, gives the annexed exhibit for inc Derantyent—Srate or New Yorn. ‘The whole number of banks, bauking associations, and individual bankers, doing business om the first day of De- cember, 1851. is two hundred and forty: four, as follow: Chartered ban!
