Fripay, Jan 9—6 P.M. ‘There is nothing new in the stock market. Prices current at the first board. to-day, do not vary materially from thore ruling at the close of the second board yester- day. The transactions show a disposition, on the part of speculators. to keep the market active; and there is evi- dently an anxiety among outsiders to come in and take theirchances There is money enovgh in the street, at rates varying @ little from thelegalstandard. The banks have just completed their quarterly returns to the Comptroller, and they will, without doubt, discount more Nberally. It is the prevailing opinion in Wall street, that money will, during the spring, be very cheap and abundant, and that speculation must, asa matter of course, become active. Wall street has been quiet for along time. There is great want of a new excitement in that vicinity. Speculation in fancy stocks acts as a safety valve, and lets off a great deal of extra excitement. It is actually necessary to get upa move ment in fancy stocks as often as once in cvery six months, to give outslders who have a plethora of money achance tog t rid of it. It is full six months since we have had much activity or expansion in the market, and it is our upon the eve of an inflation of prices, that will relieve these who have so long and 80 patiently carried large lots of stock, and put the burden upon other shoulders. No changes of importance have taken place in the posi- tion or condition of the most prominent railroad and other incorporated companies, the stocks of which are continually offered :n the street in large quantities; but & speculative demand will carry up prices rapidly in the face of every opposition. It matters little what these stocks are worth, buyers when ina state of excitement cme nothing about the intrinsic value of « security; they look entirely to the chances of getting highur prices than they paid, without troubling themselves much about the causes likely to produce such a result, It is no more or less than a species of gambling At the first board ie Railroad declined ‘{ per cent ; New Jersey Zinc, };; Reading Railroad sold at 57—divi- dend of three anda half per cent off.
