Axaany, Deo, 19, 1851. The absence of an office holder from the capital is at- tributed to the circumstance that the Canal Board re- fused to give @ certain prominent capitelist in New York city, @ contract of three millions on the canals. It ip aseerted that a bargain was made that, in con- sideration of that contract being perfected, black mail was to be handed over to the amount of five per cent, ‘If this should be proved against said officer, it will ruin him forever in the estimation of all honorable men. It ip said that he has been the catspaw of the hunkers, who were combined to seoure this mammeth contract. Nothing has yet transpired in relation to the hunker Canal Commissioners. Whether they are concerned in the transsction, is at present unknown. ‘The battalion of political contractors who have been besieging the Canal Board, have mostly left the city,in despair. It ie now quite certain that no contracts will be given eut by the present Canal Board. The Thrasher Demo: Orleans PASSAGE OF STRONG RESOLUTIONS, ETC.
