MONEY MARKET. Monvar, Nov. 10—6 P.M, ‘The stock market opened pretty firm this morning, at quotetions current at the close on Saturday. There was not much activity in the street among stock speculators, and there was no disposition to operate much either way’ The greatest interest is felt in Erie railroad, and the bulls and bears are seen coming to close quarters. There are some very bad shorts in this fancy, and it would not surprise us if there were more explosions ameng the bears Holders talk pretty confidently about carrying the stock to ninety, some say ninety-five, and some are sanguine enough to talk about par. It isa fair fight as it now stands, between the bulls and the bears, and it will not make much difference, out of Wall street, which course prices take. Harlem continues unwarrantably slepressed. There is evidently a powerful party at work hammering it. If the menthly earnings ate any criterion of the productiveness of the company, it must be one of the best paying roads in this section of the country. Norwich and Worcester does not move much either way. ‘There ia ro anxiety on the part of holders to realise at pre- sent prices, The market, on the whole, is steady; but we do not see how it is possible for a speculative movement of any importance to spring up at this season of the year. Nothing but am abundance of money, equal to apything we have had yet, can give a very great impetus to the stock market. There are decided indications of such a plethora, and if it is realized, the margin for a rise in stocks will soon be covered. The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $58,095; payments, $123,797 27—balance, $3,445 592 67. ‘The Farmers’ Bavk of Lancaster, Penn , has declared & semi-annual dividend of 4 per cent; the Columbia Bank and Bridge o., 4 per cent; the Lancaster Bank, 4 per cent; and the Lancaster County Bank, 6 per cent. ‘The receipts of the Morris Canal Compauy for the week ending the Ist inst , and for the season up to that time compared with the corresponding period last year, were as follows:— Morais Canat Comrany. Cotton continues inactive. The news from the other side is not calculated to give much impetus to shipments. Up to the 4th inst., the exporta- tion of cotton from this port was 22,392 bales, against 68,109 during the same period last year. Here is a falling off of nearly two millions of dollars in this single article. Up to the latest dates, the shipments from all the ports of the country to foreign ports, were 104,012 bales, against 160,803 during the same period last year, showing a decreese of 56,851 bales. To the same dates this year, the stock on hand was 41,708 greater than last year, and the recvipts at the Southern ports, this year, have been 40,599 bales greater than during the corresponding period last year. It appears by this that there has not been much disposition to send forward the raw material, Prices in England do not suit our planters and speculators; and where they are able, a determination is evinced to hold on for an improvement. The Liverpool market was, at the last accounts, ina very depressed state, and we fear our producers and speculator swill be com Pelled to disgorge before the close of the season, whether prices improve or not This is usually the result of al our attempts to control this great staple, and the Eure- peam manufactufers usually accomplish what they under- take in relation to this article. The crop now about ma turing will considerably exceed that of last year In regard to the growing crop, T J. Stewart's circular says :— “The first killing frost has occurred since the date of my last issue. Symptoms ef such weather were apparent on the morning of the 24th, in certain localities in the States of Georgia and South Carolina, and from that to the 27th the cold increased sufficiently to stop further growth of the plant ; but even where it has occurred, the da- mage has been of a trivial nature ; full two-thirds of the bolls not yet entirely ripened, are in a atate to be benefit- ted by the fine dry weather that has ensued, and it is expected they will be saved in a white state, Partial frosts are stated to have also occurred in the upper part of the State of Alabama, about the same period. From the southern part of the State, no alarm has as yet been sounded, nor from Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tex- as, and the Floridas, comprising, with the untouched portions of Georgia and South Carolina, about five-sizths of the producing States. The bottom lands of the valley of the Mirsissiypi, that were lost to cultivation last season, in consequence of spring floods, are now stated to be yielding heavier picking to the acre than before known. There is no longer any room for doubt about the crop ; under no possible contingency can it be under 2,500,000 bales. How much it may probably go beyond 2 pairs; hats | that amount, remains as much a vexed question as ever ; but that it bas improved during the past fortnight, ex- cept in the limited lecalities named, there cau be no question. Low rivers continue not only to retard, but to render receipts impracticable, with the exception already stated. The staple of the present growth is ex- cellent.” The message of the Governor of Kentueky tothe Le- gislature of that State, gives the annexed statement o the public debt at the close of the last fiscal year, October | 10, 1851 :— Finances ov Kentucky=Pvusir ‘There is now due of the public debt. To pay his debt, the State has the following resources, if they could be applied to that purpose :—$930,000 of stock in the Bank of Kentucky; $290,000 of stock in the North- ern Bank of Kentucky; $40,600 of stock in the Bank of Louisville, and $150,000 of stock in the Southern Bank of Kentucky; to which may be added $150,000 of stock in | the Lexington and Frankfort Railroad, and $76,420 25 bonds on the Louisville and Frankfort Railroad Com- pany—making, in all, the sum of $1,646 020 25. The State has, in addition, $2,604,239 98, stock in turnpike roads— supposed to be worth about twenty. five or thirty cents to the dollar— besides her investments in rivers, &c. The receipts into the treasury, during the year ending on the 10th October, 1851, including $96,857 06, balance | om hand 10th October, 1850, were $738,245 52 ; expendi- tures, from 10h October, 1860, to 10th October, 1861, $783,653 40—balance in the treasury, 10th October, 1851, $4,602 12. Of the foregoing receipts, there was transfer” red tothe sinking fund the sum of $214,470 83, and to the sebocl fund, $149,715 53, If the liabilities against the treasury should not be in- creased or the receipts diminished, the estimates of the Auditor show s balance in the treasury, on the 10th of October, 1853, of the sum of $110,480; all of which, except the sum of $5,000 retained in the treasury, will be trans- ferred to the sinking fund, as required by law, which will increase its resources for the year ending January 1, 1854, the sum of $105,480, This sum would liquidate the suppored deficit in the sinking fund on that day, and leave a balance in it of $64,004 16. It is apparent that after the sinking fund shall have recovered from its pre- sent temporary embarrassment, its resources will be mply sufficient to meet promptly the interest of the en- tire debt of the State. The receipts of the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad Company, for the year ending the 20th of September, 1851, amounted to $497,219; expenditures, $219,964; net revenue, $277,255. The Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railway, in unfinished state, was partially opened on the 20th of Sep- tember. It has been run since that time, in ite unfin- ished condition, by two passenger trains ® day. No freight train has yet been placed on the road. and there has been very little travel through from Sandusky. The business done on the line has been altogether local. The earnings of the road, in this condition, fer the ten days in September, were $2,617 26; October, 16,838 84—total, (ne mop’ id ten days, 19.476 11. This income is but an earnest of what the road will earn when in fall ope- ration, and it goes far to confirm the opinion heretofore expressed, that this road, when finished and put in com- plete operation, will be one of the very best paying roade in the United States, 100 fariea, RR. @ Portemouth ea be ins 86 CITY TRADE REPORT, Mowpay, November 10—6 P, M.
