They have the Power todo so, and we hardly think they can be much Dlamed for looking out for their own interests ; but they ‘are to be condemned for the sudten contractions and 6x- Pansions they produce in the money market—for the efforts they make to induce the commercial classes to ex- tend their eredit—for the facilities they furnish for spe- eulation—for the rapid inflation brought about in prices for property of all kinds, with no other object in view but to declare Jarge dividends, and at the proper time produce @ panic in the marketer, by which those who have pre- pared themselves for the movement can make invest- ments upon more favorable terms, either in stock securi- ties, real estate, or other species of property, The direc- tors of the banks in this city are, probably, as @ clase, greater speculators in the stock and produce markets than any other. It is almost ® sure thing with them; and as they have to act im concert, they form a powerful body for good or for evil. When they come into the market as purchasers, all they have to do is to contract the line of discounts; and when they come forward as sellers, they have only to loan other peoples money libe- yally, for afew weeks, to put prices up to the desired points, to enable them to realize enormous profita. ‘The iron trade of Glasgow has this year been particu- Jarly active.
