terfeit, is spelt Ambrose Cossit, instead of Ambrose Cos- ait, the correct way of spelling the name. What makes this counterfeit doubly dangerous is, that yt is one general plate. The New England Bank Note ‘Company, to accommodate banks who do not wish to in- cur the expense of « set of special plates, have prepared geveral sets of general plates, leaving apertures for the mameof the bank, the town, and the State. The five dollar plate just counterfeited is used by twenty-five Danks in New England. It will be the easiest thing smaginable to use the same plate for all the banks using the plate, and thus counterfeits may be almost indefinite. ly multiplied. Verily roguery has now achieved a victory of which honest men may truly be afraid. According to the annexed statement, the banks in Philadelphia have been doing a very profitable business during the past year.
