SCENES OF RIOT AT THE POLL@—DESTRUCTION oF BALLOT BOXES, ETC. Yesterday the election contest came off, and not for many years past has there been so much excitement be tween the contending parties. At an early hour, in the eplit wards, the opposition parties began to hover arewnd the polls, and trouble seemed to be brewing. The day was cold and blustery, which created a greater demand or liquor, and by noon, a large number of electioneerers were considerably under the influence of ardent spirits. In the Nineteenth ward considerable fighting was car- ried on. There are enly two election districts in this ward—one, corner of Sixty. firet street and Third avenue ; and the other, corner of Forty-eighth street and Bighth avenue. PUTNAM COUNTY. ‘The democratic majority on the State ticket in Carmel and Kent is 224. ‘The vote in four towns on the county ticket, for County Judge, gives Rider (whig) 50; Purdey, (dem.,) 41; A. B.Crane, (ind.,) 544. The vote for Sena- tor in four towns in the seventh Senate district gives Conger (dem.) $11; Benedict, (whig,) 402; Brandreth, | at Old 'Temmany last evening, to receive intelligence of THE SCENE AT TAMMANY HALL. A gathering of some three thousand citizens assembled. the election retur Mr. J. B. Philips was called to the chair, and Mr, J. P. Woodward appointed Secretary, At ‘on ently bour the passeges leading to the hall were crowded with an excited multitude, Speeches were de- Jivered by some warm advocetes of the democratic faith— amorg others, Mr. Philips, Captain Rynders and J.P. Woodward. The chairman, in presenting Mr. Wood- ward to the meeting, said that he wax nominated by the national reformers of the Tenth ward, for member of the Legislature, and, being a true Union demoorat, de- clined to run as candidate, and gave bis support to the regular democracy, and consequently the whigs of that ward had been defeated.
