Holders of Erie are watching each 1,004,205 1,733,482 other very cloeely, fearful that some one may slip out asa Best ae and get the advantage of the rest, The largest holders 603,112 Serra are eustaining the current price, and to do so theyare continually increasing their supplies. With thousands of shares in hand, which they are anxious to dis. pose of, it is am unpleasant thing to be compelled to add@ to the quantity, imstead of reducing it, fvarfal that prices will give way, and reduce the value of that om hand. The effect of this will be to concen- trate in the hands of a few brokers, immense lots of the stock, and the result will be, one of these days, a severe collapse. The market, in fact, hasno basis. It is likely any moment to break down. There is no demand for stocks from outsiders, and those who have them must keep them. There are afew exceptions to this. Some of the fancies are controlled almost entirely by outeiders; but a fancy held in that way is im just as bad a position as though it was held principally by brokers. Altogether things are ina bad way, and the leading bulls know it, and feel it too. They see no probability of gettiog rid of the masses of stocks on hand, and they are filled with spprehension Money is getting easier for a!l the legitimate purposes of trade, &e., but for stoek specula- tion {t is pretty difficult to get accommodations. The banks in Wall street are about as full of Erie Railroad and similar securities, as they desire, with moderate mar- gins for depreciation, and there is lictle probability of tacilities fora much greater extent being afforded. The twenty-fifth annual report of the Baltimoreand Ohio Railroad gives @ very favorable account of the opera- tions of the road during the past year. The aggregate earnings of the company for the past year amount to $1,846.222 75, being an increase of $6,417 48 over the operations of the previous year. The net earnings of the road have been $653,803 55, enabling the board to declare a dividend in stock of seven per cent, notwith- standing the increase of $531,209 added to the capital stock of the company, by the dividend of the preceding year. The profits of the road vpen the original capital of $7 000,000, represented by the finished road to Cumber- land, would make a dividend of 9}; per cent. “Situated as this road is,” seys the report, “with its revenue derived from little more than $7,000,000 of ac tive capital, expended upon a line stopping two hun- dred miles short of its destined terminus, the steck- holders have no reason to feel disappointed at this ex- bibit.’/ The earnings of the Washington branch during the year ending September 30th, from all sources, amounted to $300,535 75; and the expenses during the same period were $146,681 16, showing the net earnings to be $162 854 £9. The board announce a dividend of four per cent on the operations of this branch. The aggregate transportation of coal for the year amounted to 1€3,500 tens, being an increase over that of the previous year, of 10,619 tons, The extension of the road to the Piedmont station has added nothing as yet te the coal transportation of the road. ‘The report alludes to the want of sufficient accommo- dation for the coal trade at the company’s location a: Locust Point, and states that arrangements have been made to transfer the business to private wharves, as they may be constructed and brought into use, from time totime.
