NEWS BY THE Our Baltimore Correspondence. Bactimone, October 24, 1851. Gala Day at the Fair—Myr. Webster's Dectination—Senater Douglas's Promptitude—The Parade— Poisoning, §. Yesterday was the grand gala day at the Agricultural Fair, and it is estimated that there wore full thirty thou" sand persons om the ground during day. At 12 oclock, whem the ploughing matgp took place, the nam- bes of persons present was not ites then twenty thousand, MAILS. and it being within the enclosure, some idea may be had | of the receipts. ‘The failure of Mr Webster to be present to deliver the address, to day, will cause much disappointment, though ‘his place will be ably filled by Senator Dougias, who hap- | pened to be present yesterday, as a visiter, at the mo- | ment when a despatch was received from Mr. Webster announcing the impossibility of his attendance. A com- mittee was imme diately appointed to wait on Mr. Dou- gles, who promptly consented, and there will be a large attendance to listen to him. The procession of the Fire Department of Baltimore _ which is to come cif on the 19th of November, promises to be the largest and most complete affair of the kind ‘ever contemp! in this country. Besides the numer- ous efficient organizations of our own city, it is expected that there will be visiting companies from Boston, New York, Philadelphia, York, Lancaster, Washington, Rich. mond, Nerfolk, Alexandria, Frederick, town and Cumberland. A part of the celebration will consist of an oration, to be delivered at Menument square, by the Hom. Jobn 0. Legrand. ‘The town meeting called last night, to make prepara- tions for the Kossuth demonstration, was postponed on account of the absence of am audience. There were | mander, long to remain quietly submissive to his a | verpment does not people at once, it may find some difficult: them when their number is increased. If they could be left to themselves for a short time without doing inno- cent persons any harm, they would soon destroy each other, Such a heteregeneous mass could not hold to gether long, ifit was not kept in a constant state of ex- citement, by fighting, &c.; aud, unsupported by the Mexican people, as we are confident it is, and will con- tinue to be so long as the government continues te resist this party, it contains elements of disoord enough to cause its ruin. There are many Americans in the party who desire to obtain the highest position, amd are too ambitious and too jealous of the present Mexican com- seurcely one hundred persons present, and it was accord- | thority, with nothing more to bind them to it than their ingly indefinitely postponed. There is another thing which will tend to frustrate movement into @ successful kind revelution, (for that it is’ a “revolution’’ of ity of the party is composed of Americans. The Mexi cans, knowing this fact, wili become jealous of their en- croachments, and to prevent the formation of a second ‘Texas, and in dread of a second annexation scheme, they will rise im the defence of their soil. If any thing can make them do so this will. ‘This view of the case i: strengthened by the fact that when the revolution at Camargo was filet reported. strong symptoms of joiniog the insurgents were exhibited among the national Christiana Prisoners—Supposed | guards ot Matamoras; but as soon as the true state of the case was ascertained, and Americans Known to be the prime movers, the foelicg were ‘The Fugitive Slave law was enforced this morning be- | god’ the members of the guard, it is understood, fore Commissioner Ingraham ,who, after hearing the evi- dence produced by Noble Pemninogton, of Ceoil county Maryland, as to the ownership of Heary Payne, who ran away in 1846, remanded him into the custody of his owner, and be was taken South by the afternoon boat for Baltimore. The abolition society provided counsel for the fugitive, but there was no disposition exhibited to binder in the least the enforcement of the law.
