The public will no doubt express their astonishment how such a humble man as Mr. Greeley assumes to be, could have had the fortuna, good or bad, to be so conspicuous in England as he was during his brief sojourn there. In New York he dresses very sbabbily; here, however, he is the poor man’s friend. But that character would not do in Eng- land. They have called before thea numerous | citizens from other countries, to state to them the local system of tax impositions and tax collections | by their government, respectively. Three distin- guished citizens of our own country—Mon. Dudley | Selden, of this P. B. Johnson, of Albany; and Ashbel Smith, of Texas—have been particularly | examined. Their testimony, as it may be called, | as given im the English journals, would cover several broadsides of the HenaLp. They were ques | tioned, to the smallest minutiw, of the domestic | powers and policy of the States of New York and | Texas, in respect to taxation and the collection of | taxes, including a particular investigation by the | committee into all description’ of property taxed, | how taxed, how collected, and from what classes, | and how much, and at what expense, with the | minuteness of the most thorough inquiry. The in- | formation thus collected, relative to the local policy | and practice of the governments of New York and Texas, upon everything relating to taxes, is com- | plete, and has, doubtless, been of immense value | to the committee, and to Parliament. Our own Congress might save to the country @ large amount of money, and secure to themselves much addi- tional light and assistance upon great national | | subjects of legislation, by adopting more exten- | sively thie system of industrious committees of, enquiry, which has rerulted so advantageously to the House of Commons. Our fellow-citzens who testified before the Income Tax Committee, have acquitted themselves handsomely. In fact, they were posted up on the whole subject of taxes, and their ionumerable details, to an extent that is | almost surprising. They were aided, however, by | the questions of the intelligent committee, which | followed the subject through all its ramifications. | o; It is only the extreme length of the reports in this matter, that precludes their republication in our | eolumns. We give, however, an extract from Mr. Selden’s explanations, as a sample of the whole. | It will be found in another part of this day’s | Heravp. | Tre CrystaL Parace.—The dup'icate of the American part of the Great Exhibition can now | be eeen at Castle Garden. | Musical. CATHERINE HAYES—HER CONCERT THIS EVENING. Catharine Hayes gives her seventh concert this eve- ning, at Tripler Hall, and from the variety and richness of the bill of fare, a rare musical feast may be expected, It will be observed that Miss Hayes sings another gem from the “Linda di Chamounix,” im which she was 50 | suc’ -sful en Saturday evening, She also sings ‘Home, swe. home;” and if we can form a proper idea of how | she is likely to sing that ballad from the manner in which she has sung other ballads since she made her ap- pearance among us, it will be a delightful treat. The Montgomery Guards will attend in their uniform. The Common Council and the heads of the depart- | ments of the municipal government will also attend, in pursuance of the invitation of Miss Hayes. Yesterday, Miss Hayes visited the Catholic Orphan In- stitution in Brooklyn, where she kissed the little chil- dren and sang, to their inexpressible delight, The that onee through Tara's halls The raul of music sheds JENNY LIND—ANOTHER MUSICAL TOUR. Jenny Lind, assisted by Salvi, Joseph Burke, Otto Gold smith, Belletti, (not Belletti, the barytone, who sang with Miss Lind before) will commence her second musi- cal touron the 15th of the present month at Buffalo, whence she will proceed to Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, thence to New York, Boston and Philadelphia. She will be bere about the 15th of Decem- ber, and will give her lact concert in New York. Bene- dict has gone to Naples, owing to the illness of his wife, and Giovanni Belletti is under an engagement to Lum- ley, to sing in Paris snd London, from November to June, beginning at Paris and ending in Londen. From this it may be inferred that Jenny Lind will not appear im opem, as has been stated. She has in fact made up her mind, finally, never to eppoar in opera again, and she will probably adhere to her resolution. City Politics. The Democratic Convention of the Second Assembly District, comprising the Third and Sixth wards, met at the Sixth Ward Hotel last evening, and unanimously nominated P. G. Moloney, assessor of the Third ward, a, | their candidate, to be supported by the party at the en- suing election. The nomination is said to be a very good one. ‘The democrats of the first Assembly district, last night unanimourly selected Mr. Wm. Miner, of the Second ward, as their candidate to represent the district in the 8 Legislature. In the Eleventh Arsembly District, David O'Keefe, Jr., was unanimously selected as the democratic can- didate for representative Movements of viduals.
