the lesue prior to July 22, 1846; $18,200 of the iarue of July 22, 1846, and $11,850 cf the issue of January 28, 1847. Weare requested to etate that the Phenix Bank of Bainbridge i» redeemed in Wall street and in Albany. Part of the securities held by the Comptroller on account ef this bank are bends and mortgages, which, we leara ‘ere to be withdrawn, and New York State stocks substi- tuted. Tm relation to the fuilure of the People’s Bank of Pa- terson, the Paterson Intelligencer says :— ‘The public are quite as wise as we are. as respects the cts of a redemption of the bills. The bauk had a circulation, but the amount cannot be escertained. : see $143,729 when the annusl statement was made last. aud we should not be at ail surprised to fnait materially increased since then. Of its asrets we know nothing, but fear that will be small compared with its liabilities, As the carhier, who alone can give anything likea truthful statement of affairs, ie unwi to disclose, even to the dizectorr, the coudition of the public will have to await the examination of the eceivers. ‘These were appointed bythe Chancellor on Menday, and consist of Chas. Danforth and Corns. 8, Yeo Wagctes. Eous Paterson, and Wm. F Day, Ksq, bethtown. will doubtless proceed imm:- dietel with an investigation. and at an early day, it is 1, Will give to the public @ reliable statement of aftuire. "Ta the meantime tt may be well feeb holders not toeukmit to the ruling rates, which vary from tep to twenty five cents om the dollar. ‘The last quotation of United States Six per Cent bonds et Hamburg, is 108 to 44; do. six per cent, in Hope's certificates, 106; Masrachusetts Pive per Cent sterling, 104}; to 3; Maryland Five per Cent, 8534. At Amster- dam, Hope’s Louisiana Five per Cents are quoted at 98{. A general Court of the Proprietors of the Bank of Bng- land, was held on the 20th of September, when a dividend for the haif year ending on the Sist of August last, of three and half per cent, free of income tax or other de- duction, was declared payable on the 11th of October next, out of net profits for the six months, amounting to £554,188, which is £13,304 less than in the previous half year. After payment of the dividend, the rest will amount to £3057 613, The annexed statement exhibits the value of foreign dry goods entered at this port for consumption, for ware hourirg, and withdrawn from warehouse, for the week ending the 2d instant :— Movestents in Foreicx Dry Goons—Werxzy Iuronte. for Consumption. This is small enough for the season. The amount warehoused during the week was moderate. It is fortunate that the importations are limited, for the exportation of merchandise during September was small- et in value than during the same month last year, or in eeveral previous ones. The annexed statement exhibits the value of merchan dise exported from this port during the month of Sep- tember, distirguishing the destination and extent oy shipments to each country: — Vaive or Exrorts rxom tue Port or New Yoas— Bertem ER. sf ost gf st er = 32 ier se pars ge ERE ss ae ey SERS aS ist Pe T4588 6S 400 Owe77 = S24 18,605 099 72 1,688 ‘0 “3,870 40,264 — - — wyiss 8212 “m4 = eis on sin iGo 17.55 47 ~ - a 6,587 f 3378 4,513 732 - = 59,391 7,279 2.355 2364 483-320 1,132 Les 5 2808 WY 13 Sk 33 3a ei) ‘270 - wig a 1490 10M = 18,166 “0 ps 129 4 Ca pe igo BATA LS, TOS 114,81 ‘The aggregate value of merchandise exported during the month was $3,044,304. The aggregate of merchandise and specie exported from this port in September, for several years past, has been as subjoined:— 8 = ieee, $2.55 Pont or New Yorx—Exr Domestic. Foret; ie, $2.898.401 $288,169 $2 628,326 2672052 2» ‘5 3,816 750 2.926213 217,207 800, 446 885, ; 779 4844574 T2355 1,033,918 6.002.877 2608988 40.518 3480142 6534445 But for the large shipments cf specie in September, 1861, there would bave been a very great falling off in the eggregate compared with the corresponding month last year The exportation of specie from this port since the Ast of January, 1851, exceeds in value the exportation of merchandise. Together, the value is greater than the exports for a corresponding period in any previous year Notwithstanding thie ana the large remittances of public stocks foreign exchange is sustained at very high points, ‘and rpeoie continues to vo forward. From this time out ‘we shall bave more activity tn our foreign export trade— not so much from this port as irom the South. Cotton has commenced going forward, and before the lapse of many weeks, we shall feel the beneficial effects of such ebipments. Retes for sterling bills have already depre- ciated, and the eupply on the market largely increased. If this continues, the outward current of specie will sooa entirely cease, and our receipts of gold dust from Califor. nia will be retained for home consumption, As soon as we can retain all our remittances from California, we sball rapidly fill vp our banks, and add largely to the me- tale circulation of the country. Allwe have to do to ineure permanency in this improvement, is to keep down the importations to a moderate amount.
