We have heard, within the past three or four weeks, the names of more than twenty houses as having failed, every ore of which ‘s, at this moment, in good credit, and likely to weather the storm successfully, if there are not too many Mark Meddles about, spreading all kinds of reports relative to their insolvency, ko. ‘There are at all times plenty of croakers about, who seem to delight im circulating bad newer. It is, in fact, their vocation, and generally their interest, to destroy public confidence, and make it appear, if possible, tbat we are upon the brink of soother terrible financial revulsion. Bear epeculators in the stock market are instrumental in epreading distrust, and it subserves their interest materially, to agitate the public mind and extend the excitement as much as possible. Itis their chject to make everything in the financial and commercial world appear black and lowering—to make all suspicious of each other, and any heavy failure is a perfect god-send to the shorts. During the past two or three weeks the bears have been in clover; but it is the impression smorg the best informed financiers that they have had their day. There may yet bea deeper depth, and it may be several weeks before any improvement is | realized, Only those who are actually compelled to sell, | part with stocks at present prices. Confidence in the | value of most of the securities in the market is as great ever, but holders who are engaged in business have recently been eo much pressed for money that they have been obliged to realize, at any eacrifice.
