Lancastan, Sept. 28, 1851. ‘The hearing and examination of the persons charged with being concerne 1 in the murder of Edward Gorsuch of Maryland in Sadsbury township, Lancaster county, was resumed at 11 o'clock this day, before Alderman Reigart, in the Cour House, which was crowded to ex- ceca with citizens, and with strangers from Baltimore, and various parts of Pennsylvania. ‘The following named accused persons were brought into court by Sheriff Huber and his posse:—Elijah Lewis end Castner Hanway, (whites,) John Morgan, Henry Simms, and Jacob Meore, (negroes. ) ‘The two whites (the one a storekeeper and the other a miller, mem of property, and heretofore known as men of respectability,) were charged with being aiders aud | abettors in murder; and the others with the shooting and killing of Edward Goreuch. Attorney Gencral Brent, of Maryland, was hore, at the request of Governor Lowe. George L, Ashmead, Esq, of Philadelphia, attended in behalf of John W. Ash- mead, Esq., United Btates Distriet Attorney, whose preesing efficial duties elsewhere prevented his at- tendance. The District Attormey proceeded to open the case, by stating the history of the facts that he would be able to prove by testimony to be presented. Ife said the prisoa- ers here in court, on examination, were charged. in the first place, with being guilty of wilful murder, not only ifthey had not fired guns, but even if present at the time; and two white persons were charged with aiding andabetting that murder, They were charged also, under | the lawsof the United States, as being in open rebellion agalnst the government, in defying the process of the United Btates officer and laws of Congress. He read the act of Congress, of April 30, 1799, as to treason, and also stated, that by acts of Congress, justices of peace, and other magistrates of the several States, are authorize to exercise jurisdiction as prescribed om primary proceed. ings, in cases of crimes and offences against the Uaited States.
