Collision on the Sound. On Boann or Steamen Emrine Brare, September 25, 1851. } ‘TO THE EDITOR OF THE UERALD. Boon after seven o'clock last evening, this beautiful steamer lert her wharf at Full River, with every prospect Of pleasant and speedy passage to New York. Nothiog occurred to mar th> happicess of any one until aboug, ine o’clck, when the ergine bell was hoard to strike to slow, stop, and back, and almost simultaneously a terrific crash was heard. Now. the scens on board was awful ia in the extreme; im»gination can hardly picture it, and noone can know the horror depicted on the couute- | ‘ances of the passengers unless thy y have boon witnesses: ofa like scene in collisions of vessels As soon as I eculd get out of the stare room saloon, on the forward te ‘the boat, raw thar the b at was nearing a “rock shore,” and ere >he cocid be stopped another col- Msion occurred. She was towed into Newport by the steamer, which after waros proceeded up to Falt River apd repaired some sl'ght damage, and leit again about three o'clock this morning ‘The steamer Bay State. trom New York for Fall River, was run into last night cif Pulkner’s Island, by a feboouer iosded with i ouad uy the Sound,’ whieh had her bow cut down, and bowsprit carried away, and wes caured to leak. ‘Two men were rent on board from the steamer to render assistance, and she stood off up the Sound Meeting of the Colored Residents of New York. Laat evening, a meeting of the colored revidents of thig city wse announced to be beid in Terrence Hall, No. 155 Chureh street, at the hour of seven o'clock, but it was nine o'clock before the meeting was organized. Where all this will end no one can tell, Within the past month, reveral heavy failures have taken place, and the names of more than # dosen others are reported. The effect of these things is bad, and must lead to unfortu- nate results. There’ is no doubt but that many meroan- tile houses are seriously embarrased in this affair, and find it dificult to get along from day to day. The rumors that are so freely circulated are, therefore, caleu- lated to make the position of these concerns more un- certain, and actually cause failures which otherwise would not have occurred. We have within the past day or two, heard of failures which we kuow have not takea Place, and we have bern exceedingly cautious in giving currency to any of the rumors afloat in the market. Almost any house baving heavy payments to make, ex- periences difficulty in raising the money, at the highest rates of interest, with their credit untarnished; but when rumors of their having® feiled are abroad, it becomes impossible to obtain the ways and means to meet their engagements, and the rerult is easily seen. We would, therefore, like to impress as strong as possible upon the minds of every bear speculator im the stock | market—of every croaker in and out of the street—the | importance of putting down at once every idle rumor re- lative to failurca, and to be su e of the truth of any re- port before greater circulation is given to it, By so doing, the excitement in commercial circles will be considera bly allayed, and all symptoms of a panic soon dissppear. Money is in active demand. It it seldom that a tighter market is experienced, and the most exorbitant rates of interest rule. Railroad acceptances are plenty enough in the street, end any amount can be purchased at one and a balf and two percent permoath At this rate the floating debts of our railroad eompanics must be exceed- eMsly embarressing, and the payments of interest make erious inrogds into their net revenue. Erie Railroad ac- ceptances are daily negotiated at the rate of eighteen per cent per annum. Busiuess paper ranges from ten to twenty-four per cent per annum, and purchasers are par- ticularly cautious in buying even at the greatest shave, ‘There rates ure ruinous, but they are freely submitted to. It isstated that the failure of the People’s Bank, of Paterson, N. J., will be a bad one, According tore turns made tothe Legislature of New Jersey, last fall, the condition of the bank was as annexed: Prorre’s Bax or Parensos, Je ABS, Jon 1861.
