Bs EXAMINATION AND EXTRADITION, Zxcitement in the Queen City of the Lakes. FURTHER PARTICULARS OF THE STORM, Sie, SiO, Bice Arrest of a Fugitive Slave—Great Excite- ment. Borvaco, August 15, 1851. The second cook of the steamboat Buckeye State, named Daniels, was arrested this morning, as a fugitive slave from Louisville, Kentucky. He is olaimed bys man named Moore. It was kept as still as possible, but the report soon spread through the city, and a large crowd collected around the building in which he was confined. An attempt was made to take him to jail ina private carriage, but a very large and excited crowd blocked up the passage, seiaing the horses by the bits, and making threats of violence if he was not released. The fire bells were rung, which served, in @ measure, to dis- perse the crowd, and he was then taken to the watch house, still followed by a large number of persons. That all that has transpired up to this time, ADDITIONAL PARTICULARS OF THE BUFFALO FUGI- TIVE SLAVE CASE. Burvaco, August 15, 1851. We learn, In addition to the account given this af. ternoon of the negro’s arrest, that when ho was taken the con of the claimant stepped up behind bim while he ‘was passing along on the boat at his ordinary avocations, ‘and felled him to the deck with one blow of a billet of wood. The blow was a severe one, laying open the back part of his head and rendering him senseless. The ex- couse given for this act was understood, by some who were present at the examination, to be, that he had a carving knife in his hand, with which he intended to attack his assailant, This afternoon he was taken up to the Court House under charge of the Mayor, large body ¢f police, and two orthree companies of firemen, who were called out for the occasion. Considerable difficulty was expe rienced in the undertaking, and several persons, acting as guardians, were dragged down and trampled under foot by the enraged multitude. The Court House was finally reached, ands large number of persons collected inside to witness the first trial, in this city, under the Fugitive Slave law. A dense throng collected outside, blocking up the passages and rendering them impassable, thereby preventing all ingress or egress into or out of the Court House. The examination was held before United States Commissioner H. K. Smith. Only one wit- ness was sworn—the same person that knecked the negro dow’, The negro did not deny being a slave. The ex- amination was, consequently, brief, and resulted in an order for his return to Kentucky. He was then remand- ed to jail, whence he was taken without much trouble. A warrant was sworn out by one of the citizens, charging the negro’s assailant with assault and battery; and he has been arrested, and is now in jail. It is re- | ported he will be tried te-morrow morning. Before giving the order for the removal of the fugitive, Mr. Commissioner Smith offered to subscribe twenty. five dollars Otele mee hisfreedom. J. L. Talcott gaan Har Keq , acted as counsel for the ac- cused. ant xcitement has somewhat abated. Knots of per- be seen gathering at the corners, discussing the merits of the case, Now that ite operations are seen and more vividly appreciated, there seems no disposition to attempt anything like « violent rescue. We bave endeavored to supply the most important omissions, and correct inac- ouracies; ut there are, doubtiess, some publicstioos omitied, exclusive of the pericticals issued by book pub- \ishers, quack doctors, and other philanthropists, of which we take no account. ‘The list of periodicals other than newspapers is evi- dently very imperfect, and therefore we make no calon- tiom on the ciroulation of that portion of the pross, It ‘will be observed that the census returns omit such long ortabtiched and well known magazines asthe American Whig Review, the Kheckerbocker, amd the Democratic Re- niew, Wo have ineerted them in the list, but are not in. formed as to their respective cizculations, and omit these and other periodicals in our calculations. ‘The Evening Post and Evening Mirror having stated their aggregate circulation, in city and country, at 7,300 ‘and 7,000 in the census returns, we have apportioned them according to our best information. ‘Taking the list together—although some of the papers are doubtless overrated—we think it affords an approxi- mate idea of the correct amount of the aggregate cirou- lation of the city papers, which, it will be observed, runs up to the large number of over cighty-two millions of sheets (double and single) printed in a year—the daily papers be- ing estimated at 310 days per annum. The cost of the paper alone is $614f03; and probably as much more is paid for printing, editorial and other labor, making the total expenses of the newspaper press of this city considerably over one million of dollars annually. 'To this la to be added expenses for rents, telegraph, and ship news, &o.—per_ haps a quarter of a million more.
