The time has gone by when afew bank presi- dente can control financial affairs in Wall street, and we may, therefore, look for more moderate fluctuations in the money market. The present stringency is the re- sult of several causes, the most prominent of which is the large id steady exportation of specie to Europe. "This, in connection with the great and rapid decline in prices of cotton, the enormous expansion of credits, and the immence losees realized on most of the mercantile movements of the day, has been preparing the merean- tile community for one of those collapges which have in. former years been so ruinous in their operation. The probability is that quotations for all stocks of @ fancy character will continue to depreciate. The difficulty al- Teady realized in negotiating loans, and the high rates of interest paid on those negotiated, has forced out agreat many lots of stock which otherwise would have been withdrawn from the market.
