THE DEMOCRATS IN PENNSYLVANIA nner nnn. ‘Phe Judicial State Convention. OUR HARRISBURG CORRESPONDENCE. Hagreisaena, June 1, 1851. ‘The Comiest To-day—The First Issue to be Dicided ‘The Real Battle—The Humbug of Conventions and Ratification Mesings—The Outcry About Nutivisre and Foreign Birth—The Chances of Cass and Buchanan E'stimated—General Scott and David Wilmot—The Coming Struggle, ete. ‘The remainder of the delegates arrived last night, and tho hetels are creaded to excess The train whiob leit Philadelphia at half past ole sen o'clock yesterday forenoon, only arrived here at twenty minutes to nine o'clock las: evening, thus occupying | more than nine hours in runing about one huu- dred miles, which is at the rapid rate of eleven miles per hour, and which can be easily beaten by the trotting horses of New York. Being laden, how- | ever, with such weighty men, due allowauce must be made for the jocomotive. Buchanan was at the door of the hotel when the cars stopped ut Lan- caster, which is his residence, and conversed with | the delegates, and shook them by the hand, as they | went into a drink, The fi commenced to-day, and it is in- tended, ii Soest, to end ittoday; bat that de- the candidates vote for five Forte? The convention consists of 133 dele ‘Bye first names, therefore. have received the requisite num- ber of votes for the nomination, It is curious, that after all the preliminary discussion, and with so large a number of officers and candidates, the whole matter should be settled on tho first ballot, which wax announced at 6 o’elcek, Mr. Wilmot voted for Campbell, ns one of his five, aud the President voted for Gibson, Woodward. Lowory, Black and Campbell. ‘The interest seemed to be concentrated in the nomina- tion of Campbell There was a breeze between Wilmet and G. W. Brower. The convention adjourned die, at 645 o'clock. Our Phiiadelphia Correspondence. Partapeveiia, June 12, 1851. Jenny Lind’s Cone Vidal: Letter Missing, §. ds upon the pluck and bottom of the opposition. t the skirmish at this outpost is not tne battls | itself, though it will afford u sure indivation of the | vietory. Nor is it even the nominatiun of a Judge of Supreme Court that is the boxe of contention. | it is something far higher than that—it is the Pre- sidential chair; and both conventions are merely auxiliary to that great end. Thut these couven- tions are sheer humbugs, is evident from the fact that everybody knew befure the Readiug Conven- ticn met, that Bigler was to be the uomines for Governor; and it was equally well known, at the samo time, that Campbell would be nominated fur Judge ofthe Supreme Court. The meeting, t ae fore, after deciding the matter beto.vhand, ir farce, and while it is amusing enough to the a Meta | it ought te administer instruction w him also. It! shows that the people, at all these primary elections, hase no real voice nor vote, but that vverything is done by wire-pullers and undertakers, wnile dust | iw thrown in the eyes of the sovereigns, and the | eternal principles of democracy or whiggery, as the | case may be, are lauded to the skies iu spevcaes | to Buacombe. The ratification meetings are managed by the same leading strings, tad soon to the end of the chapter. ‘Tost Campbell will be nominated searcely admits of a doubt; and the op- | position will receive as great a thrashing as they | did at Reading. The organization tor Bachaua is stronger and more complete here than at the former convention. ‘The opposition, from the legal profession, toCampbell, is decided, snd some of them | turn up their noses with the utmost contempt at | him, taying they would be willing to vote for a | lawyer, even if “he was not their tread, but that | they will never vote for a demagogue he opposi- | tion threaten to defeat him at tae polls; aud soine | of the leaders declaie, in mournful accents, that uo- | thing can be a greater injury to a party than uot to put forward the best men for judges They say they wished to buve Gibson, who would do equal credit to the democracy and the bench, but thata certain coalition defeated them. They allege toat it is all bypoerisy on the part of Campbell's triends to make an outcry about * nutivisin’—the object being to divert attention from his qualitivations, and at the same time to raise # sympacay for him among the foreign born population, waica feeling | is to be carr into the election for i’resideat some hazed fighting may be expected; but there will be no direct expression of opmiva, as far as I caa | jearo, in favor of Buchanan, His friends thiok it would be premature, for they calculated upon a | more decisive and extended recoguition of bim in | tbe South, which they think wiil coatrol the nomi- | nation here, without an difficulty. They will, there- fore, work quietly for the present. They rely upon | his unrevoked declarations in favor of tue Missouri | while his being out of Congrees, when the late compromise measures were adopted, exeupts Lium from all responsibility. Whereas, Cass has made | himself obnoxious to the ultras of the Soath by his advocacy of the most hateful, to them, of chose measures, though he did not vote for the only one | of them they valuei—the Fugitive Sluve law Suck is the way Buchanan's frieods reason. They have not the slighest doubt that be will obtain the nomination, not only in this State, but at the Balti- more Convention, in May next, or tha: he will con- trol it for somebody else; for the idea has bean darkly hinted that Besbacan is not working for himself, but for another, and it is shrewdly «us- pected that this individual is little Douglas It is well known that Buchanan and be are intimate friends. Buchanan looks old, and one would toink more fit to prepare for the kingdom which is not of this world, than to undertake the care of thirty- one United States and their territories. But if he is bitten with the propel he will run, though the socomplishment of his object might, as it hus dove in the case of other Pre=idents, hasten bis exit from | the of this world to that which is to comy. | He is an old bachelor, and is wealthy. There is » growing cvnviction among all sections of the people in this State, that General Soutt will obtain the whig nomination at the nativns cou- veot on of that party. ‘Tbat be will get the nom nation from chis State, seems certain The whige of Pennsylvania are quite confident that be will be the next President. The whigs of this county are intensely in his favor. At the last Presideatial no- mination, he obtained fifty out of fifty-four votes af the Daaphia County Whig Convention, while ‘Taylor only received four. i he expecte ed defining of his position by the Hon. | id Wilmot, the dele gate from Bradford evunty, sod author of the famous free toil proviso which beare his name, is a circumstance that invests this convention with more than ordinary interest.
