Wasninartos, April 4 1851. ia a wil be | Mr. Webstr—The President—Enemies of the Ad Ipslso epesteaio of mini ation—the Presidency, Se. From the preparations made by Mr. Webster) fore leaving Washington, recently, it is supposed | that he intends to be absent six weeks, or two months. In fuet, there is very little of importance to keep him here at present; and he wisely thinks that « brief eojourn at Marshficld will recruit hie | health, which has not been very good of late. It | would not be a matter of surprise to those-who are in the possession of certain facte, if he should resign his post of premier before the next fourth of July. He considers that the Union is now safe, that the compromise has accomplished its purpose, and that. we now breathe ‘pure air”; therefore, one of the | objects—if not the prominent one—whieh induced | him to accept the post of Secretary of State has | been met, and he may retire with credit, having acted well his part. The President is procee fee with re- ‘ard to the next Presidential election. Hv has not, nke Gen. Cuss, announeed that he will bea eandi- | date, nor has he said that he will not. He is tothe agitation of the question among tlie E | as to who shall be the standard-bearer, because, the present state of public affairs, sectional’ —s | rations would largely enter into the canvasd, and rd is planted on a great national basis, and sustain the meusures of compromise, His object ° to unite the whigs first, and then leave to @ conven- tion the selection of a candidate; und that candi- date te may, by possibility, be himself, ebster, it is understood, does not, to say the least, encourage Mr. Fillmore to aspire; in fact, he does all he can, with propriety, to check the de- sire for a nomination; and this is to be attributed to the fact that Mr. Webster is himself looking to the occupation of the Executive mansion. The waters of the adininistration, generally, look | smooth upon the surface; but some think that we rhould not aitogether trust to appearances. That there is discontent with Sp to certain prominent office-holders, there is no doubt. Mr. Webster was opposed, it is suid, to the appointment of Mr. Greely as Collector of the Port of Boston, and the collector’s conduct since has not rounded the shi edges of the Secretary's dislike. The recent visit of the Postmaster General to Boston, and the close ties of private friendship between the President and Mr. Hall, lead to the belief that the latter went thither more particularly to look after Mr. Greely. It is well known that Pennsylvania whigs have been here, demanding the removal of anti-Fillmore whigs; and from the State of New York many com- plaints have come up. Mr. Seward thought that if bis friends were not touched, they would not be uproarious against the administration; but in this he was not a true exponent of their feelings, It is evident, if the Repudlic can be viewed as the President's official organ, that important ae are meditated with regard to the publie patron: the extent of which may be inferred from the c! on ing paragraph in this morning’s paper, in which the editor says: “It would be just as unreasonable for the President to lend the aid and countenanee of his administration to Southern journals, which de- nounce the compromise for abandoning an hundred thousand square miles of Texas to freesoil, as it would be to continue the same aid and countenance to Northern journals which denounce the same com- perpen for selling the same territory to slavery. cach section has secured the good results it expect- ed from the compromise; let each section bear with what it may consider the ill results, in consideration of the incalculable advantages which the whole country derives from the termination of a dangerous and distracting coutroversy.” We await further developements, expecting to see the heads of some of Mr. Seward’s friends brought to the block. About haW a century ago, there was a design on the part of the commissioners who laid out this city, to assign prominent sites on which to erect ings for the heads of the departments and the foreign ministers. W ashington and the elder Adams selected one for the Portuguese government, and a deed was given for it; but the Attorney-ene- ral at that time expressed the 09) ouniee that Con- gress only could dispose of the public domain, and the subject has been suffered to rest from that aie to the present. ‘The Portuguese Minister, jowever, has recently been making inquiries about the site, which, being in the occupaney of the erent he is willing to take another—if he etit. As the admuistration has shown so pers industry in pressing claims of American citi- zens against the Portuguese government, that overnment thinks it is perfectly justitindle in look- ing after the old invalid grant ot . CariTaL. Our Albany Correspondence. Avuany, April 4, 1851. The End of the Bull Fight in the Senate. The Senate have spent two days, at two sessions each day, in disposing of the Bull and Suydam affair. This morning the resolution offered by Mr. Mann, yesterday, was taken up, which contemplated the imprisonment of Bull in the Albany jail for the term of fifteen days, being the remainder the session of the Legislature. Several of the speeelics on both sides of the question were very able; but it was soon perceived, from the turn which the debate took, that party lines were to be pretty strictly drawn, and that Bull’s whig friends would not consent to his imprisonment, Mr. Babcock the leader of them, declareing that he had committed no offence under the revised statutes, which would authorize the Senate to inflict that punishment. Mr. Geddes, another whig Seuater, thought Bull was suffering under a sufficient penalty by being discharged from the service of the Senate. On the other side, Mr. Mann and others contend- ed that as Bull had been guilty of a most palpable contempt of the Senate; had procured a paper from three Senators fraudulently, and which he had used purposely to obtain money wrongfully, that theretore the dignity of the Senate had been com- Promised, and it# honor insulted; that by inflicting the proposed punishment, the dignity of the Senate, fo far as hie improper conduct was concerned, w be vindicated. The vote was finally taken, ‘and his imprisonment refused by a vote of 15 to 1. All who voted against the resolution were whigs, except Mesers. Brandreth, Crook, Skinner, Stanton and ‘Tuttle—all who voted in favor were democrats, ea- — Messrs. Beekman, Crolius and Cross. So Geo. . Bull, late Sergent-ai-Arms, was not doomed to te —_ ie a prison by the Senate of the State of ew Yor! ‘That matter being disposed of, Mr. Schoon- meker called for the consideration of the resolution offered by him, yes'erday as follows: Lerolved, That in view Of the evidence rubmitted to the Senate by the Select Committee, Senators Robinson, Johnron ard Stone have net forfeited the eontidence of the Senate in their bonor and integrity as Senators and fe men. Mr. Mann Proposed an amendment in the follew- ing manner: Strike out all after the word Stone, aud insert “were guilty of highl, in their office of Senators, in 24th of March, addressed to M in its consequences, Las iv Senate —and the Senate is, vindicate its own character by such, ee ae ged be necessary for that purpose.” tremely heavy upon Senators Robins and Stone, and was received as row ots and censure upon them that, if adopted, would compel them as gentlemen of spirit to vacate their seats immed atel Mr. Mann followed his amendment with Tapert of great force, contend ng that the w of signing a japer, us a committee of the Senate, ledging that the gambling bill would not become a ie during the preseut eession, was casting an odium on the Senate, inaemuch as it permitted Bail to use that paper, containing those signatures, for the purpose of procuring money ill Mr. Mann was very pon in bis remarks. “Lhe three Seuetors sat mute during the diseussion.
