MONEY MARKET. today. Quetations for some of the fancies, to-dey’ ‘Went up, and some went down. Reading Railroad ad ‘vanced 14 per cent, with very large sales; Stonington Railroad advanced 1 per cent; Norwich and Worcester Xj Farmers’ Loan, 4; Morris Canal, X. Erie Rail- road fell off 3 per cent; Harlem, %; Portsmouth Dry Dock was in demand, and nearly two thousand shares ‘were sold, principally for cash, at yesterday's prices. ‘The transactions in Erie Railroad were limited. Have the individuals who telt so confident, a few days since, that the stock was going right straight up to par, got ‘all they want? or do they think the stock is worth less now than when it was selling one or two per cent Bigher? It is our opinion that they have got more than they can comfortably carry long, and are afraid to put much stock om the market, fearful of deprecis- ting its market value. The advance in Reading Rail- road, to-dey, is perfectly ‘egitimate, and is but ® beginning of the end. The dividend will be paid on the 12th of January next. The heaviest hol- ders are anxious to get all the stook they can, before ‘the appearance of the annual report. The shorts are inabad way, and must have already been serious suf- ferers by the rise, From the appearance of the mar- Ket, the feeling of the largest holders, the large divi- @ond in the prospective, and the prospects relative to the business of the fiscal year just commenced, we should judge that there was yet a wide margin for a farther rise, and that the ideas of the most sanguine friend of the company would be fully realized. Sto- nington Railroad has taken a start within the past dey ortwo. Itisnotin demand, The decline in Harlem today dees not amount to much. This stock has many firm friends, who feel confident an advang of some importance will soon be realized. The usual di- vidend will be made in February next, and the month- Jy increase in earnings is satisfactory. The gross in- come this year will be sbout five hundred thousand dollars. ‘The receipts at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of this port, to-day, amounted to $792,133 40; pay- ments, $39,777 64— balance, $3,844,205 15. Among the Receipts, today, was the sum of $750,000, transferred from Beston. ‘There has been an active inquiry for foreign ex- ebange tor remittance, by the packet leaving this port | for Liverpool to-morrow, and some drawers have put up their rates. We quote on London, 9\ a 9}¢ per eent premium; on Paria, Sf. 20 5f. 17; Amsterdam, 41 9 41; Bremen, 793¢ 2 80; Hamburg, 36 a 35}¢. ‘It will be seen by a notice in another column, that the Rocky Ber Mining Company have declared a divi- dend of one hundred per cent. ‘The New York and Erie Railroad Company will pay the semiannual interest on their stock on the 2d of January. ‘The East River Insurance Company have declared & dividend of five per cent, payable on the 10th inst. ‘The amount of cash duties received at the Custom House in Philadelphia, during the month of November, ‘was $159 828 35; corresponding month last year, $131,- 15 45; inerease, $27,712 90; receipts for the first eleven months of 1850, $3,213,029 86, against $2.457,- 15 76 for thy same period the previous year, showing ‘an increase, in 1850, of $755,514 10. It should be borne in mind by our capitalists that proporals for the $500,000 seven per cent mortgage Joan of the Obio and Pennsylvania Railroad Company, are received until 3 o'clock Saturday, the 7th of De- cember, at the office of Winslow, Lanier & Oo., No. 52 Wall street. This is, without doubt, one of the best in- ‘vestments on the market, and it should command a premium. This road forms a very important link in the line of railroad between the cities of New York, Philadelphis, Pittsburg and Bt. Louis, which, when Anished, will be shorter than any other route be- tween this city and&t. Louis, It has been our opinion for sometime past that the rate of interest in this eountry must steadily decline. The great influx of capital and the frequent and speedy communication Detween the United States Great Britain, must tend to equalize the rate of interest, by reducing our Present standard, and perhaps slightly raising rates in England, It is unreasonable to suppose that money in this country can command six and seven per cent per annum. whilst it is going s begging in Eng- land for two and three. In view of this, we have no doubt but that all good, sound six and seven per cent investments in this country, will soon be scarce; that they will be all absorbed by capitalists for Permanent investment, and those not fortanate enough to secure them, will be compelled to loan their money at three, four and five per cent interest. Rail- road bonds, properly secured, bearing high rates of Anterest, have already become favorite investments. A year or two since, it was very difficult to negociate a Railroad! bond; now they are as easily negotiated as any Btate loan, and the amount of bids Is generally three or four times the amount of the loan required. ‘The Delaware and Hudson Canal Cempeuy have de- clared s @ividend for the inst six months of six per payable on the 16th of December. be citizens ot Petersburg have, individually, sub- scribed very liberally to the Petersberg and South Bide Railroad, and the aggregate of subscriptions amounts to $150,000. The city, also, has taken, in its corporate capacity, $100,000, and is only waiting for authority from the Legislature to eubsctibe an addi- tonal sum of $200,000 —thus making the joint eontri- Dutton of the city and its citizens upwards of $450,000. ‘We wont our Southern friends to notice, that one of the clap-traps rtarted by those inimical to American interests, and freely published and lectured upon by one of the itinerants from this side, at Manchester, in August last, wos the reduction of the spindles runaing im the New England States. As great efforts have deen made to present this ia e wrong light abroad, and the oorporations in those fanatical States, who owe all their wealth to the institution of slavery, have winked at it, for the perpese of forcing down the price of cotton early in the season, when they usually are large Dayers, we have taken great pains to collect the der of mills and spindles in each State using cotton wholly, leaving out all of those engaged in the manu- facture of warps for satinetts, merino shirts, mouseline de isines, and chawls, of mixed materials, of whioh it forms « component part ko 4 the aggregate of each Btate is as follows, by Pratt's New England Directory, with euch addiction corrections as are added from the best informed sources in this city:—In Maine—15 cotton mille, 8,489 looms, and 113,900 spindles. In New Hemprbire—40 cotton miils, 12.462 looms, and 440 401 epindies. Ia Macrachusette—165 cotton milla, 32,655 Joome, and 1,286,091 spindles In Vermont—12 cotton mills, 345 looms, 81,726 epindies. In Rhode Idand —1066 cotton mills, 27,283 looms, an 138 spindles In Connecticut -109 cotton mills, 6,506 loome, and 952.812 rpindles. king an aggregate of 607 mills, 82,640 looms, and 2,751, dies; of which there are ‘only stopped, 00 emall and 23 large mills, containing 8,760 looms; and, in fact. we have geod reason to be- lieve that they will very shortly commence werk in 31 of chem, from indications now being divalged. For the purpore of showing at a glance, the extent of manutacturing in the Eastern States, we give, in a tabuler form, the mills, looms, and spindles, in each Btate — Minis, Srixvies, ano Looms, ix New Exotano. nar Looms, Spind 3.439 113, 12402 440,401 this country, the ensuing year, will unquestionably be greater than jest year, and it is now a well-ascertained | fact, that the stocks of cotton goods in first hands are very much less than those existing at this date last year; and they are so steadily inereasing tm value, that It te impossible to enter either the Boston or New York markets for a cargo for export, without raising Prices, in some styles, five per cent. The stocks of domestic cotton goods held by the jobbers in the Atlentic States, are very light. The country towas and the interior cities all hold light stocks, and an advance commencing st one point, is felt instantly throughout the whole country. This was not the case last year, as heavy stocks, made trom low-priced cottons, were held over, and have now disappeared altogether—the stocks, at present, standing in nearly present cotton cost. Aslong as these stocks existed, prices could not attain a healthy elevation. That has mow passed by, as evidenced by the steady advance every week for the last two months. Machinery could not stand idle, with such a state of things as now existe, although s great temptation is offered in the meeting of Congress, and hopes of greater pro- tection are looked forward to, as the foundation of future princely fortunes, by the already favored New Englanders. The steck of cotton, at present, in all that section of country, is @ mere bagatelle. We do not believe there is twenty-five thousand bales of cotton beld by all of those mills at this hour, or ten thousand bales afloat, from the South; and as they are actually using up now thirty-eight thousand bales per month, and usually purchase six months’ stock in December and January, it is plain that they will be soon felt in the market. The State of New York contumes 16,000 bales per annum; Pennsylvenis, 12,000; and Maryland, 5,000; without going into the Bouthern or Western States, where new buildings are commencing, in a to be sure, but far more than twice enough to for the few bankrupt, or political policy New Eng- land mills, which, hort time since, were stopped. It is perfectly well known, that the reason the New Eng, 8nd mills exhibited a consumption of only 48 bales last year, againrt 518,039 bales the year before, was simply because, on the 3lst August, their stock of raw material on hand, was than ever before. All the tables which have been framed, exhibiting their consumption yearly, have been on the principle of the stock of raw cotton being always the same on hand. We contend that the New England mills aloneywill actually purchase 500,000 bales of eotton this year, as the spindles now there are so numerous, that without lighting up morning or night, they will require that quantity; and they are not the men to stop a lucra- tive business eut of pique. We have not space, to- day, to take up the subject of the mills in Great Britain, and at present merely name the fact, that those about Manchester and Glasgow have only taken 28.586 bales of all kinds from Liverpool, on an average, for the last fifteen weeks, whem it is well known that their average spinning was 7,000 bales over that quantity, and they must now be buyers for their full weekly consumption, and extra buyers, also, or pay two prices, two months hence, as they prefer. In conclusion, we strongly urge upon the Southern plant- ers the policy of holding on to their cotton; keep it out of the market; pile it up on your plantations; and you will goon be in @ position to dictate your own terms to the cotton lords of Lowell and Manchester. tock Exe! 11336 Webs Hudson Riv RR 7 ca We ¥ Waite tn, ‘5102 100'Mad k tadianliae 13 8500 0 102 “60 Brie RR 00 82 0 Read Mig Bas 8 cash 6600 do 7 bio eo Erle 76, "29 10s oo wasters RR 400 Hudsen Riv Bade Wy 200 Po) be City 0100 * 300 7) 10 Del & Hud ¢ 13% 100 do Jig Porta Dry Deck Sig 2) Harlem, prof te vg0 hf Go Norwigh: pret’ 100 Farmers’ Trust Bq 50 nag 00 290 64 1050 Read RR SK 100 do bis 2% 30 =o #10 20 «do 10 do b90 7 100 do BOARD. 100 shs Farmors'Trast 83% 100 do 530 535 550g do Big 100 PoFta'h D Dock B30 8i¢ 6 Stonington RE an rT 4 4 6 e37 Tt mu Th 7 aha ADVERTISEMENTS BENBWED EVERY Day. aeKC1AL | NOTICES. ae Ror: RS OF 74% NEW YORK ATUE- SHEP Ms = re inform th a, ‘that their Tuisf" Ga ave boom rer ce of the wnfa state of'the weather, It will take place this evening should the weathor Drove pr ouRT, oF COMMON PLEA: a Judah, or James Se: e SAMUELS }.
