Our Philadelphia Correspondence. Purcapacrauta, Nov. 18, 1850. Opening of the U. 8. District Cowt—Charge Re- latwe to the Fugitive Law—Vinting Firemen— New Mail Line to Baltimore, §. One of the principal topics of discussion here, this afternoon, is the charge of Judge Kane to the Grand Jury, on the opening of the Novemberterm of the U. S. District Court. The subject on which the weate—the Fugitive Slave law—is ably handled, and the danger of interfering with a Marshal, in bs Toms his duty, will at once be per- Bowerd fie company, of Baltimore, will ar- ef comprehending the importance of the trust mitted to them, and of understanding that legislative privileges conferred on them, are for the the inbabitants of thet spirit ef enterprise by the exercise of which alone they ean hope to advance in a opinion that the Northern railroad to Lake Huron, if made, would not pay one per cent. The rush over rye in he ara ree Es tine af. | tbe alle, from this side of Lake Ontario, would be poet oe be is to be a grand parade of our fire- | ach that the passengers and freight could scarcely on the occasion of the reception here of the ‘Hose, of yourcity. Twenty-eight of ‘jourcompanies have signified their intention of join- be CY the escort. and after the first of December next, a mail Yrain for Baltimore is to leave this city, daily, Cept Sundays, after the arrival ofthe mail line hoon our city. This will enable travellers who leave New York at nine o’clock, A. M., to Cy : 3 same night in Washington; or, if bound to West, to reach Cumberland by daylight the mk morning. be all taken, letting alone the immense trot way business which must necessarily exist for s rail- road passing through « country the most fertile in America, one county of which contains upwards of one hundred thousand inhabitants. It would be charity, wore the railroad companies in this and the two adjoining States to invite the members of the Council of Toronte to visit their railroads, so that they might acquire that information of which they are now so deplorably ignorant, with respect to the cost of railroads, the means mode of their con- Hoxrwie Svicipx.—Freeman Tucker, an old resident near Montezuma, Pike county, i was found dead in his bed, on the morning of the 5th inst. He had spent the night alone ia Yo house, and in a fit of mama potu, as is supposed, he seat himself on the floer, cut open his abdomen, mek out his intestines, and cut them off in exact len; until he had obtained five pieces. He then Taleed himeelf up, as the prints ef Ris bloody hands on the floor plainly attested, laid his knife on the table, aud went to his bed, where he was found on the followi lowing means quite dead. The doggery keeper at Montezuma, whe had regularly furnished Tuck- er with liquor, on hearing of his horrid ead, imme- diately looked at his account book, and very coolly remarked that he had lost “two dollars and a quarter” by the eperation. Verily, he shall have his reward.--Cincinnati Enquirer, Nov. 14. —— MONEY MARKET. Mownar, November 18—6 P. M. The stock market opened much more buoyant this gnorning, tham we anticipated from the complexion of things in Wall street at the close of the market on Saturday. Monday being usually blue day among fancy stock speculators, the buoyancy exhibited at the first board was indicative of an upward move- ment during the week. When we look at the immense amount of stock put upon the market, it is » matter ©f considerable astenishment to us that prices hi ven been so well sustained. It shows not enly cond- dence among purchasers, but it shows that facilities for carrying these stocks must be easily and cheaply @btained. The season has, however, pretty well ad- ‘vanced, and the prebability is that within a few weeks, we shall be in the midst of dull times. We do not Jook for any important depreciation in the leading fancies, as the prospect in relation to many of them is too flattering to lose sight of, or to saerifice by Premature disporal of stock. Another Celifornia steamer will be along in a few days, whem another remittance of gold dust amounting to two or three millions of dollars, will come to hand. It isimpossible to resist the influence of this enormous importation of gold, and we ehall probably seo the effect in the steadi- mess with which prices will be sustained, or the steady improvement realized in prices for property generally. The traffic of all our railroad companies during the part year, has no doubt been'stimulated by the eir- culation of California gold among the producing class- es, and the prosperity of the country generally; and the increased receipts, with the improvements made in the mode of management, have been of great bene- ‘Bt im placing their affairs upon a better basis. So far, we can speak from facts and figures; but whether this greet and favorable change wil continue to be perma- ment is another question entirely--one whioh time only will determine. This year cur railrouds have done well, and the economy and judgment used in the ad- ministration of their affairs, will go a great way to- wards removing the effect of mismanng: former years. At the first board to-day, Canton Co. adv: per cent; Farmers’ Loan, 4; Erie R.R., \; Reading H.R. . A larger portion than usual of the transac- tions, to-day, were for cash, which looks as though the struction, the amount of business done upon them, amount of dividends paid to stockholders, the advan- tage or disadvantage of running during the winter months, when all navigation is closed, &o.,&0. Wesay it would be ebarity, were the companies in question to give the Council in question such an iavitation, in which theg are themselves much interested, for the reason that the railroad across the portage from To- ronto to Lake Huron is necessarily an important link in the great chain of communication, to connect, by the shortest route, the great inland seas of North America. In this point of view, the oulpable epathy of the Council of Toronto to use the important powers wisely conferred on them by the Legislature, affects not only their own prosperity and that of the adjoin- ing counties in Canada, but it also affects the interests of these States in a considerable degree. rie RR Perper’ SBIRVIIAVS: eG ce GR oo. The Northern Railroad from Toronto, to connect Jakes Ontario, Bimooe, and Huron by an iron band continues to be warmly advocated, and by none more irenuourly than by Mr. Capisol, the indefatigable manager of the company—a gentleman of enlightened who seems to have been providentiaily “ lo- at Toronto, to impart light to its benighted in- habitants, It is riekening beyond measure to look ‘over the accounts in the Toronto papers of the sayings of the members who compose the il of that city, en the subject of the railroad. In such body, we might expect to men of intelligence and inde- pendence; but from their conversation, it is obvious that they possess littie of either. The Legislatare of the province has conferred extraordinary powers upon them, for the express purpose of assisting to build this railroad; but they have not the nerve to carry into ef- feot the purposes of the act, nor do we believe, from ‘the ovidemoes before us, that they have the capacity to comprehend them.
