Grexiey axp Tue Wuwot Proviso—Gresury Transrixxp.—In the course of an editorial article which we published in the Herald eome days since, we charged Philosopher Greeley, of the Trtbune, with boldly avowing, when the slavery agitation was at its height, that he preferred a dtssolution of the Union to the abandonment of the Wilmot Pro- viso. Notwithstanding that but a very few days re- main of the present session of Congress, very little | real business was transacted in Washiagton yes- terday. The bill granting bounty lands to the sur- | viving soldiers of the war of 1812, was passed by | the Senate, and in executive eession they con- firmed the nomination of Mr. Maxwell as Collector ef the Port of New York. Mr. Maxwell’s agoay is, therefore, over. The Army Appropriation bill was passed by th Houte, und the Light House bill was ordered to | be engrossed by the same body. Miss Dix’s biil, | grenurg a portion of the public lands forthe support of the insane of the several States, has been laid over UI next session, when we hope it will receive the attention which its importance deserves. WU | there is no consututional impediment in the way, | the project of that estimable and philanthropic lady | seculd be carried out’ The House occupied the | remainder of the day with discussing the Indian | Appropriation bill. We are sorry to hear that the bill establishing a | branch mint in New York is not passed, and that there is no likelbhood of its passage during the pre- sent ceseion. That such an establishment is ur- gently needed ia New York there can beno doubt, as hes been conclusively proven. We hope that it will be agreed to early during the next sessioa. Our readers will fiad in another column, a re- port of the proceedings of the Whig State Con- vention at Syrocuse yesterday. Itseems that Mr. Fish, the present incumbent of the gubernatorial | ebair, declines a re-nomination. We expected this; for ramors heve been afloat for some time past, that he would not be a candidate for that | love freedom. No. we jerked his pantaloons over the tops of his unpo- lished boots, and stigmatized the charge as a “ ma- licious falsehood.” We repeated the charge, and determined to prove it when Philosopher Greeley became calm and could listen to reason. He is now, we think, composed; and we will therefore proceed with the duty of showing Mr. Greeley that what we suid was literally true, and we shall do it, too, by extracts from his own columns. The first ia en extract of an article which ap- peared in the 7'ribune of the first of February last. Having embraced the Wil- mot proviso, we will go ona little further, and see the spirit and tone of other articles that he wrote on the same s1 ject — EBSTER AND SLAVERY. Cry Inrrovemevts--Grano Park on THE Turn Avence —A grand park, to serve as luags for the metropolis, has long been desired. Between Cato’e and the river, it is well known, there is a pee forest of (wo hundred acres, celebrated as the property of the old Dutch family of Schermerhora. There are several private roads leading to a few beautiful residences, in this delightfal locality; bat they could soon be swept away, if necessary, in order that the public might have a grand park. All the great European cities have such opea space for the pleasure end comfort of their inhabitant with the enjoyment of such public grounds, New Yorkers might boast of « place bearing favor- able comparison with Hyde Park in London, the Praver in Vienna, or the Champs Elysées in Paris The city authorities, very unwisely, contemplate rupning the First and Second avenues tarough this forest and grounds.
