Roston MONEY MARKET. Senpay, August 6PM. | During the past week the stock market hes been dull, although prices bave been mueh more firmly maiatained than during the week previous. It is sel- dom. even at this season of the year, that we experl- ence euch a heavy, inactive week in the stock market, as that just closed In the face of all this depression and apathy on the partfof speculators, prices have been astonishingly sustained, there sppears te be no anxiety on the part of holders to realize, and no appre- | hension that any important depreciation will be re- abized. Bolders, generally, feel confident that upon the opening of the fall campaign among stock opers- tors. that prices for everything in the shape of stock securities must advance, that an active demand must | carry prices up several percent. and that a specula- tive mevement to some extent is sare to take place. These impressions induce them to hold, and they patiently wait the starting of the machinery that is going to either make or mar their fortunes. Unforta nately for the success of the various schemes formed in the minds of fancy stock speculators, the season is likely to open with prices very much inflated. Most of the fancies rule so mueh above their actual value, or eo much above points where it would be sufe for even the most reckless epeculator to take hold, that we do not see where fresh purchasers are to come from, in this stage of the market. It is true that large lote of all the leading fancies are held in Wall street at about current prices, and this is a guarantee that every effort will be made by those who are perfectly well acquainted with the modus operandi of inflating stock bubbles, to get up an excitement among out- siders, and draw in, if possible, a new sot of specula- | tors. Wall street, probably, has not been for many years so full of fancy stoeks as at this moment. All the | leading bull operators are flooded with them. The | high prices which have ruled for some time past have | brought out large quantities of stock; and it has accu. mulated in the street in the hands of those who have _ been compelled to take all that offered, to prevent the market from breaking down. In so doing, they have | aflair. ane deing justice to the entertainment, the Mayor of Toronto proposed four toasts, prefacing exch by appropriate remarks. The Queen came first, which wos received with all honor. The President of the United States followed, which ‘was received with enthusiasm. Judge Stu responded. Then came the Governor-General, which was yeceived with great enthusiasm. Lord Even responded, in an excellent speech. ‘The Mayor and Common Council of Buffalo, completed the toasts, which was received by ea- thusiastic demonstrations. Mayor Smirn acknowledged the honor, in his ‘usual happy style. The festivities were kept up ‘until a late hour. August 9—8 P. M.
