There wae no moterisi alteration im the stock mar- ket to-day, either as regards prices or extent of opera- tions, The arrival of the steamer from Chagres, with one anda baifto two millions of California gold, had no more effect in Wall street than the receipt of so much anthracite ceal, and the two parties of specu. lators were pretty well balasced But for the large | operations In Hartem, the market would here been | unusually quiet. Af the second board: | the market was little more buoyant, aud closed tole- rably firm. By the arrival of the steamship Empire City from Chagres, we have advices from California to the ist of January, one month later than those bropeht by the Previous steamer. The Empire City brings neatly twelve hundred thousand dollars in gold on fretgat, and it te estimated that about one million more isin the bands of parsengers on board. To be moderate, {! would be rafe to estimate the amount of gold received | by thie steamer, at one and « haif millions ($1,600 000) of dollars, This large sum. added to previous imports, Will ewell the aggregate to about $0,000,000. The in- telligenes brought by the Empire City is calculated to give a greater impetus to the Californis movement than hae ber perienced since the first siaty of ninety days after the first discovery of gold in thet country The steamship Philadelphia left to day for Chagres, foll of passengers and avery heary mail, and the Empire City will leave on Tuesday ment, loaded with pasven- grrs, more than four hundred having already secured Derthe; and by every comreyance crowds are taking their departure for the shores of the Sacramento There appears to be no fet up in the ¢i of emigration, and the population of California moet at this rate ot increase double iu a twetvemooth. We are just beginning to realize the proceeds of the rale ot merchandise shipped from this and as the destination of all This ao- to the States wiil be large, and itis it least a million of dole part of the world to California, aud these payments will, doubtless, continue, at the rate of two or three millions of doliars per month. It will require ship. ite of gold to this extent, to bring up arrears and keep up with the shipments of merchandise to Call- forvia It having been pretty clearly demonstrated that the mines of California are inexbaustible.and that they cover Bearly the whole of that section of the world, govern- ment should edopt some method to realize some of the Denefits of such a valuable accession of territory. The only way this can be done to the greatest advantage, i to bring the mineral Jands into the market, in small id sell them to the highest bidder. Due no- tice given of this course, would bring forward an im- mepse competition, and government would realize an enormous amount of money’ from these la through them, the capitalists of Europe would invest the bulk of their immense wealth; and we should at ‘once realize enough to pay off our national debt, the entire expense of the Mexican war, and sufficient to construct a railroad from the Atlantic to the Pacific. All this might easily be accomplished by & proper ap- Propriation of the wealth in the possession of the go vernment. The people of all nations sre now mining and carrying off this minerel wealth, and thus far the government have not been benefited one farthing. It is time to make ve it in this itter ; but bave no expectation that Congress will abaadon the all-absorbing slavery question long enough to give this subject the attention it deserves and requires.
