“@asS CONSUMERS’ MEETING. ae, ‘The gas consumers of this city held an aljourned mecting at the Broadway House, last evening, for the purpose of taking into comeiders’ on proper measures for obtaining relief for the grievan»e- which they now ruffer, in being at the merey of the w sponeiies that have the control of lighting the city. '!« meeting was larger than the previous one, and # |" spirit was apparent. In consequence of the in ‘isposi- tion of Gen Lyman, the gentleman who preside! at the former meeting, Alderman Mercer was appointed chairman. ‘As soon as the minutes of the preceding meeting ‘wore read and approved, Mr. Kentish sald the pext bu- giness in order was the reading of the reports of the committees appointed on the previous evening. The committee appeinted to obtain signatures and fumds reported that they hed collected $29 62 in funds, but could bave :aised muea more if there had been on necessity. They alro collected a number of sig- es of gas consumers who are favorable to the con- templated reform mr, in the absence of Mr. Bergen, the other committee, addressed t ‘and seid that for ten years past he has felt interest im this matt op’ to monopoly Das ured his pen and bi mono- poly during that tim A few years ago, the busi- nets of supplying the eity with water was in the bands of monopoly, but it was so badly con- ducted that the people applied to the Legislature for liberty to supply themselves with that neovs- rary article, and altbough there was @ special contract with the Mephattan company, it was granted Nor did that company sue the city for damages, t of the contract being taken away from them. in precisely the same position now respecting Gae, a8 we were then in respect to water; and there is as much need of reform in this matter now, as there was in the other some years ago Mr. Camp then ri ferred to the history cf the New York gas monopoly, and the manner in'which they got contract trom the city government to light the city, by making the mem- ders of the Common Council of the time interested— or at least by proposing to light the city with gas at the same expense as oil. ibis was the way in which that exclusive contract was obtained by the New York Cos Company. That contract exists to this day, but it bas not been complird with; for, by its provisions, the company was bound to light any and all streets that the cmmon Council, by resolution. should diree ard yet, im mang instances, the company have posi tively refaned to light as directed by t. ity govern- ment. Agaip, they were bound by their contract to furnish gar of a certain 2 of purity—equal to the article furnished tn Loodon; but the gas which is provided by this monopoly is ¢f very interior quatity, ‘nd cau no more by compared to the London gas than the iumination of a farthing rusblight can be com- pared to that of a eperm eandie, Thus, then, it is clear, thne the New York gas monopoly have violated, their contract in two particulars The Manbat:an Gas Company then came in for @ hare of blame from the rpeaker) Whem they applied for a contract, they aoade cherges of fraud. corruption, and everything else egeinst the old compauy sod thereby obtained what they Gesired. But if both were now placed slongside of each otber, it would be a difficult matter te distinguish between them. as regards extortion and corruption. in conclusion, Mr (awp again referred to the viola- Lions of their contract, by the New York gas monopoly, as well as to the fraud- committed in the measurement, by which, be said. notwithstanding the reduction inthe price of gus for the year 1849; the bilis amount to muob more then they did tn the year 1848, The only way io which redress is to be obtained, isto demaud ot our public servants that the supplying of gas shall bs made & department of the city government, Look at the quality of gas that ie furniebed! In the very street in ‘hich’ be (Mr. Camp) lived, three persons have been murdered, within these years past, because of the fa- ieiency of light. Who ¢ ter through the streets at might, at present, the risk of encountering burglar: ple of thi ebaracter generally ? P not frequent streets that well lighted; and the want of gas in the Five Points is one of the reasons why that neighborhood is the resort of burglars, thieves, and such lik Mr. Benen read a report of the Law Committee of the Common Covneil, on the memorial of the new Gas Company, that the contract with the New York Gas Company be rereloded, aud they be allowed to o in an Rainy : e im the privilege of of supplying t e breach u Cor of gas of a quality far i for—it having been equal to the article with which the city o lighted.
