“Tux Cas Mososony.—Aecordiiy to the state- ment Which “@e published yesterday, we pay the gas men ypoly at the rate of one hundred and sixty two Collars per month more for gas, for the Herald e*.ablishment, than we paid in former years, thus showing the extent of the extortion practised upon us by that swindling concern. Hundreds and thou- sands*ot persons are treated in a similar way, and are fleeced to an equal degree ; and it would be well for them to make their cases known, so that ai «Legislature may see the great extortions prac- tused upon the people of New York by this soul- lese monopoly. We, therefore, call upon the pro- prietors of public hotels, and other buildings, as well as private consumers of gas, to make out the bills which they paid for gas for the month of De- cember, in the years 1849 and 1848, and hand them into this office, so that we may publish them, and exhibit to the world the amount and extent of the extortion practised on this unfortunate community, by the monopoly in question. We wish that gas consumers would take particular note of this re- quest, because we Wish to present on Wednesday morning, an array of facts that will astonish the community as to the extent of the villany prac- tised by the gas monopoly, and be of service to the gas consumers meeting, to be held, on Wednesday evening, in the Broadway House. Amusements, Civi.izep anp Savace.—Have you seen the charming Mary Taylor, of the Olympic, in the drama of “Delicate Ground’? Have you seen Walcot, of the same house, in the character of Sangfroid? Have you enjoyed a slice of the exqui- site humors and excellent acting of Burton’s thea- tre? Have you laughed at the monkeys, and admured the splendid lions at the Menagerie of the Bowery % We frequently talk of the legitimate drama, and the fashionable opera—but the stock acting, actors and actresses, at the minor theatres, are equal to ‘any performances, and superior to many, in this orany other metropolis; not forgetting the glo- rious lions, the ferecious tigers, the magnificent elephants, the laughing monkeys, parrots and po- mies of the Bowery \-enagerie, which is equal to any in London or Pans. Look at Mary Taylor, of the Olympic—a splendid woman—a charming actress—a fine figure—with a genius that will yet reach the topmost poiat of fame, if she could only geta fair chance in theatricals. Go and see her— go to the Olympic—go to Burton’s—go to the Mee jere—nothing like variety. Imrortant From Wasiinoron—Tae Recext “Deratcations.—We learn from Washington that the edministration, in Cabinet Council, have re- solved to begin criminal proceedings against the defaulters that have been discovered since the in- avguration of General Taylor. The cabinet hesi- ated at first but the President, finding that the Jaw of 1846 was very positive 1a its enactments, teok the matter in hia own hands and insisted that, as the people elec sled him to execute the laws, he would execute them, and take all the responsi bilty.
