MELODEON - N) Miva LAY. ee New York, Monday, January 14, 1850, The News from California, The news which we publish to-day, from Cali- fornia, is interesting in various points of view. The arrival of the steamer Cherokee, yesterday, which brought this intelligence, with her numerous passengers, created quite an excitement through- out the city, in spite of the sanctity of the Sab- bath. The great number of passengers soon spread threugh the hotels, and gave prompt and curious replies to all anxious inguirers. Some praised California as an El Dorado—others cursed the country as a humbug; but all agreed that great for- tunes and much misery were as abundant there as gold dust. The news is interesting in every point of mew— political, commereial, social, financial, and even religous. California hus fully organized a State government, and elected a governor, legislature, senators, and members of Congress. If the fede- ral Congress, at Washington, do not admit her asa State, she will assume an independent existence, and, in a few years, become the great ruling and predominant nation on the Pacific. There can be no mistake about this destiny. California has the men end the materials that will give her a control- ling power in those extensive regions, and she will attractto her, as a centre, Oregon and Lower Calitorma, back to the Roeky Mountains. The news which we give to-day, and the tone of public opinion in that region, point unequivocally in that direcuon. In a commercial aspect, the news confirms, by additional facts and stronger probabilities, all the predictions we made a year ago, of the vast revoe ‘ution which was about to be eaused in the com- mercial world by the gold discoveries of California. The high prices of commodities and vast opera- tions in those regions, present no prospect of di- muinution or subsidence. Indeed, the prospects of next year are +ven more brilliant than the past. The most brilliant imagination never yet pictured, | with half the force, the sober realities written down in the history of that couatry for the year past. It bi tonished, amazed, perplexed the whole crilized world, and has brought forth the wonder of the whole European press. Every arri- val only adds to these impressions. Tue Romance or tax Tomns—Artinoton Be: net’s InpictmENT Cask, aND OTUERS.—The in- dietment of Arlington Bennet, and the stories told of him and others, by Mr. Wilkes, are creating a great deal of talk, not only among the residents of the Tombs and Centre street, but in the grog shops and brokers’ offices, at the police stations, and especially among the news boys. This new spe- indictment of the Drurys, and the investigations of the police, with the romantic adventures, devel- opements and stories published, are al! read with the greatest avidity by all classes of society. The more recentand more curious developements relat- ing to Arhngton Bennet have produced even a deeperand wider sensation, in consequence of the peculiar notoriety which that person had acquired during the last few years as a sort of crazy-headed | philosopher, poet, warnor, gentleman-farmer, and Tattlebrained teacher of book-keeping. If Boston has the big Parkman mystery, we have half o dozen smaller ones. But, ean all theee mingled matters of seriousness and simplicity, of erime and tolly,of murder and | sic, of assassination and chemstry—can all this be true, or even founded on facts? Doubts and difficulties, questions and surmises, as to the | authenticity more or lees of these things, have been started in almost every quarier. Mr. Foster, the leader of fashion in Wall street, we believe, is | day fortnight. terious! mvinced that at one moment his life was within six inches of nothingness. We have dictments of the grand jury, the robbery | » the romantic accounts of kes, the speeches of counsel, the cards of the necused, with that of one-eyed Thomp gether with a variety of documents and curious | evidence. But the whole preseats itself in such a myste} and complicated shape as only to ine crease the desire to know more about th and ascertain the correctness and truth of all the strange things. We know pething concerning these personages, except something about the former history of ngton Bennet. The story told by Mr. Wilkes, professing to give the history of his jife, is, to | certain knowledge, entirely incorrect. There ¢ two Bennets, ene of them a distinguish- eoder and prophet, who was for several years emorg the Mormons; and the other is Arlington Deanet, who has made himself notorous im thit cuy, having once taught bookkeeping here, and for some time past has been residing on the other side of the river, engaged in curious phi- losephic These two personages of the same game are distinct existences; one isa New Englander, and the other an Irishman. Yet, in the ckheich professing to give the life ot Arliag ton Bennet, Mr. Wilkes blends the two nets into one, rolls them both up in the same podding, | the difierent facts m the lives of the two | + a8 belonging to one and the | As the Tribune saye: a'so the Dy tO- | | matters, investigations and giv diflerent individu femme person ny yet to be ex. pe in which Drury, \ebley, Gemnet, Wilkes, Bristol i ki on the Oyclop, Offeer A.
