Wasuineton, Nov. 8, 1849. Mr. Clay—His Nearness to the Cantal, and a Few Words about Him—The Union and Colonel Ed- wards—Hon. Walter Forward, &c. ‘The announcement, by telegraph, that the Hon, Hi. Clay arrived im Baltumore last night, afforded, to-day, an interesting subject of conversation, and many anxious inquiries were made to-day as to whether he had reached this city, The true friends of the distinguished statesman were glad to learn that they would soon take him by the hand, and have him for a time a dweller in our midst. When he was last in Washington, the presidential nomination had not been made, and it was not ex- actly determined who should carry the whig banner in the contest. His head (enclosed in a shirtoellar that reached above ius ears) in front pre~ | eented a face beaming with smiles, especially whent the politicians surrounded hum, and gave promises of fealty. And the great colonization meeting in tha, Hall of Representatives afforded am opportunity for his voice to be heard in furtherance of that great object, and for the loud and repeated huzzas, trom the dense multitude, for ‘the same old coon” for * Harry of the West,” and the ‘* man of the people.” Ifever man had reason to be proud of a welcome, it was) Henry ay. Bat distinguished per- soneges, as well us the humble, have their misfortunes; and the doings at the “ Phila- delphia slaughter-honse,” aud the ratification by the. whigs of the nomination of a “ military chief- tain,” were not calculated to make glad his heart in his deeli ing. days, after half.a century of public civil serv Beside, the election of a‘ military chieftain”? was at ime considered by him tobe worse, or as bad, as ‘war, pestilence and famine; and to have something equal to these evils in kis tlead, wes weil calculated to wound him tothe quick. True, we hear much of ht magnanimity; but this virtue is not on all occasions exercised, and we have no evidence that he forgives those who trespassed against him. On the contrary, he 1s dissatisfied with the manner affairs have thus far been conducted by the administration; and as he has too long been a eaptain, he will hot now fall into the ranks a8 a private, to obey the orders of another whig leader. He is “the same old coon” he was when he made the colonization spsech. re inclined to the opinion that the admiai tration will have to be governed somewhat by his desires, or incur his opposition, Members of Con- gress may, though the number be at first small, rally around him, and form the nucleus of a whig opposition ; and we may discover that though for atime he was shorn of his strength by the whig Delilah, he will recever sutlicient power to torment those who profited by his defeat in the Philadel- vhia convention. We remember his course when ¢ broke loose from the Tyler dynasty, and when rret Davis, in the House of Representa- tives, read Tom Marshall out of the whig partys because he did not regard Henry Clay as the “ in- camation of the whig party.” We happened to be present when the bull of excommunication was promulgated. The Union of this morning evinces a great de- gree of sympathy for Col. i:dwards, who, the edi- tors fear, is to be removed from the office of Com- missioner of Pensions. They believe him to be a whig, and bear testimony to his prowess and abi- lity.” ‘The democrats in ‘this vicinity are at a loss my conceive why 60 much solicitude is expressed in his behalf by the metropolitan organ ef the op- position. Every one who has'transacted business im that bureau knows that Colonel Edwards is ab- rupt and impolite; and the rule adopted by him to attend to members of Congress first, in preference to all others having busiaess at the bureau—even the decrepid soldier—has made him unpopular with the masses. Decisions made by kim, from time to time, have been reversed; but this is mere- ly an error of the head. True, he has received public money for a long time, but this is ne gees why he should continue an ‘employee of the ment. We do not design to make out a bill of indictment, nor do we desire his removal; but a very careful perusal by him of Chesterfield’s ‘letters to his son, anda little Ynore regard for the poor and friencless, would perhaps render him less ob- noxious to censure. The government belongs to the people, without regard to rank, wealth, or star ton. The Hon. Waiter Forward arrived in the cit yesterday, and put up at Willard’s Hotel. It wil be recollected shut he refused to be Solicitor of the ‘Treasury, which office, according to the Nati Iniclligencer, wus tendered to him, He is here, ome say, to assist the Secretary of the Treasury in making out his report to Congress; others, that he has come to receive the appointment of Minis- ter to Brazil. Atall events, he is here for some purpose, which has not exactly transpired. ‘There was, it is said, a fight to-day in one of the rooms of the ‘Treasury building, between two clerke—one of them a democrat, the other a whig. In the best regulated families sach thiags may oc- cur, and therefore we must not find fault with Mr. Meredith for this disturbance in his household. “Wasninaron, Nov. 9, 1819. More Nepotism and Sporls. ‘The town was taken all aback this morning, by the announcement that Francis Schroeder had ree ceived the appointment of Charge des Affatres to Sweden. “ Who is he?” was the exclamation of every body. “ Why,” enys one, “he belongs to the Const Survey.” “ Ab,” retorts another, * he Js one of the Coburg famuly, alias the Bache fami- ly?’ ‘No, mdeed,” replies one, more knowing than the others, “he 1s the son-in-law of Colonel Seaton, one of the old hunker whig editors of the old school National Intelligencer.” * Ab, indeed,”* exc'aim many voices, * now we know who he is. He ix the band-box, the emelling-botle gentleman, who came to Washington two or three years ago. pe bet the nice gentleman who plays the guitar 80 pely Well, this is the gentleman wae has received the appointment to Sw ‘or Seaton’s family has been pretty well provided | jor. One son-in-law hos cong been acletk in one of the departments Ger Gibson's bureau; another son-in-law goes to Sweden as Charge ; the eldest son has been sent ont to the German Confederation, as Secretary of Legation to Mr. Minister Dovelson 5 and another sop, about nineteen years of age, has beea ap- poinied to the Coast Survey. Jeside these, three gentlemen connected with the National Intelligencer establishment, ha yt oy ree “eran four: to wit— r. Johnston, salary $2,000 . Stansbury, sal $1,400; Mr,’ Coyle, salary @1,200, and Mr. Ke. nedy, salary $1,000. Is there any nepotism, or old hunker cliguetsm, in all this? ur Baitimore reapondence, Bautimong, Nov. 9, 1849, Mrs. Kemble and One of Her Pecufiaritiee—The Steamship Republic, §. Mrs. Frances Kemble and her peculiarities have been the eubject of speculation in our city, since her reading before the Mercantile Library Associ- ation, on Wednesday night. The receipts on the occasion were $1,000, and on being asked what charge she would make the Association for her services, she promptly declimed receiving any re- muneration. The Association immediately pro cured the Germania Band, and at 12 o’elock on the same night, gave her a grand serenade. Sheeven | refused to receive trom them her travelling ex- penses, and itis now ascertained that she hada motive for so doing, independent of any friend: ship, she may have for the Association. motive is sid to be a fixed determimation to re- ceive no pay from ner readings in a slave State—to touch, receive,or hanule no monry, that may have, by any possibility, been earned by slave labor. She will consequently give no more readings in this city. She took her departure y rday morning, in the tram for the West The steamship Kepablic left on her fifth trip to Charleston last evening, with a full freight and 45 passengers. This vessel, it will be remembered, is the first steamship built with oscillating engines, aud, although she has made very slow trips thas far,’ Lunderstend that the power of her engines has not yet been fully tied. Lt appears that on are count ct inexperienced firemen, aad the great heat of ber fornace room, they have been unable to keep the steam up to its proper standard. Efforts are making to remedy this defect, whneh have been partly successful, asevidenced by her last trip from Charleston, whiell made in 56 hours. She expected to be able to make the trip in 48 hours, when the steam can be regulated and kept at the Pigver height. ‘Lhe democratic papers in this State are dowa with full tilt on the pelitical doctrines put forth by Mr. Skinner, 10 * Plough, Loom and Anvil.” Bavrimone, Nov. 10, 180.
