INTELLIGENCE BY THE MAILS. Our Washington Correspondence. Wasnineton, October 24, 1849. Third Auditor of the Treaswry—A Rush for Places —Governor Johnson—Clerical Excitement—Ne- groes in Ofice—Coal Trade, §c. Mr. Gallaher, the newly appointed Third Audi- tor of the Treasury, entered upon the discharge of lus duties to-day. A gentleman, who was in the department at the time, reports that there was a large number of office-seekers in waiting, to take him by the button, and importune him. But this will de no good, all the appointments being made by Mr. Meredith, as three of the auditors can tes- tify. It was said that John C. Clark was appoint- ed to the First Auditorship, with his hands un- manacled, but this 1s a mistake; Mr. Meredith exercises the cole power of removal and appoint- meat. You were informed that Governor Johnson was in the city recently, when it was strongly te that he was urging the appointment of Mr. Pearson, of Pennsylvania, to the Sixth Auditor- ship. But Peter G. Washington is still im office, and is backed by several influential gentlemen. He is almost trongly in his plaee as the trea- sury building itself, and only a cabinet earthquake can shake him out of his official boets. Mr. Mere- dith did not please the Governor much, when, it is said, he refused to give him a minute’s audience ‘onthe eve of the starting of tl i ars, in railroad which he took passege for home. He did not de- Br r. satisfied, at all events, and it 18 believed that Pearson stands no chance for Peter’s loaf. Quite a little breeze sprung up to-day in one of the Spc departments. It appears that an occa- sional correspondent of a Baltimore paper entered into an argument to show that Maryland and Vir- ia have not got more public patronage than they eave, that Yankees and seekers from new and distent States had better stay at home, and that Mr. Ewing, instead of being the Secretary of the Interior, is, in fact, the Secretary in the Depart- ment for the State of Ohio, as many good offices here, and in Oregon, and California, have been filled with Buckeye whig politicians, “One of Mr. Ewing’s friends suspected a certain clerk of being the auther, and immediately drew up a paper, in the form of a 1equest, asking the editor for the name of the wicked author. This was signed by a number of clerks, and will be forwaided to Baltimore. The. writer, how- ever, need be in no fear of decapitation by Mr. Ewing’saxe, as he isnot a toady or an employée of the governmsnt, and, perhaps, never will be. While wosking of Mr. Ewing, we suggest that it would be well to dismiss from employment the impudent yellow fellow, Blanchard, placed in office on the recommendation of Mr. Webster, and who in the company of the raffians who broke the head of Mr. Paralté, the servant of the Mexican munister, and who last night was an associate of a black fellow who stabbrd an imoffensive white man in the region of the heart. We do not see why negroes should. be appointed to, or retained in office by Mestrs word, Preston, Meredith, Collamer and Ewing, while so many poor white men Would rejoice to have the humble posts of mes- sengers snd laborers. We did feel like “ killing eomething,)”’when we saw white men scouring the passages, while darkies walked with pens behind theirears. A poor pale face ought to be, at least, as good as a darkey, provided he behaves him- self! ‘The negroes are impudent, and dangerous encugh in this city, without the favor of the go- vernment. , In view of the cos! trade, to be commenced with energy so econ as the canal shall have been com- pleted from Washington to Cumberland, gentlemen from # distence wre making arrangements to reap a portion of the barvest, and willendeavor to sup- ply the North with this excellent fuel. 4 The U.S. vessel Allegheny is about to be dis- mantled at the Washington Navy Yard. This morning the sailors were paid off and discharged, and some of them took the cars for their homes. | Our Baltimore Correspondence. Batiwore, Oct. 25, 1849. If the district and county officers will not interfere—if the Governor will not interfere—if the inhabitants will remain passive under outrages of the mest atrocious character, for the sake of the fair name and fame of an American city, the aid ef old Zack himself should be invoked to maintain the su- premacy of the laws through the persuasive elo- quence of powder and ball.
